I think at this point if a brand said "hey guys, I'm James the new community manager for this brand. I'll be tweeting coupons, special offers, and brand updates to our followers, and I'm here to answer any questions. Thanks for following us" it would be The Next Big Thing like those Expedia commercials only without the cutesy "intern" shtick (in which they talk about things going viral and blast an air horn sound on their phones and are trying to EVOKE millennials while still being helpful and it's still annoying)

Thanks for following us" it would be The Next Big Thing from my observation there's a line drawn between graduates pre 2009 and after, when one of my local unis (uqam  ) launched the stupid lip dub fad and everyone scrambled to follow upwhat should've been a funny one off became an annual tradition of creating ~online engagement~ and people got the notion hammered in their head that this, this is the kind of poo poo you do to get online visibility, so latching onto memes is now hardwired in them i know a couple community managers and where the c levels are also post 2009 they get bombarded by "hey we should use [internet thing] for our next campaign lol" a lot i do those paid marketing panel things a couple times per year, once i see it there i know it's time to grab the bug out bag and hit the countryside
