When Nintendo was just a thing I got to play at a friends house, Mario Kart was 100% about the Battle Mode. It was a huge added value since they basically snuck a deathmatch game into your racing game. It's a bit obtuse not to get why people miss "real" battle mode stages. It's like if Halo exclusively used campaign levels for the deathmatch multiplayer. The best thing would be if the first dead player could turn into a bomb again. I tried some MK64 recently to get some of that bomb goodness, but maaaaan it is hard to go back to like a 16 FPS racing game :/
