– Corin’s Fortress of Fun (£2.69): 50 levels featuring new gizmo obstacles and enemies.
– Papa Blox’s NES Expo (£2.69): A treat for retro fans that features 50 levels based on classic NES characters.

– Bundle featuring all four DLC packs, £8.99
– Bundle of three DLC packs after Mallo’s Playtime Plaza has already been purchased, £6.29
– Bundle of any three DLC packs after already purchasing one of the following: Poppy’s Sculpture Square, Papa Blox’s NES Expo or Corin’s Fortress of Fun, £8.09

I actually have New Super Mario DS on the DS and I have a file 100% played file (done with Luigi, naturally), and I quite enjoyed it. I would never nominate it for Best Mario Ever!, but I still quite enjoyed it despite what I thought was a lack of diversity in power-ups. I liked the Blue Shell, but it did not seem to pop up very often. I am a bit tempted to get it on VC to replay it on the big screen at some point. Being a DS game, it won't be weighed down by rubbish Wii controls. I have Wii Punch-Out and would have bought the VC release when it came out, had they added other control schemes. I was just trying to play that again the other day and I had forgotten how uncomfortable the sideways WiiMote was in my huge hands. I ended up trying Punch-out on Dolphin emulation with a PS3-style controller, and it felt sooooo much better. drat fine game, Punch-Out, but not giving it Pro controller support I do not understand, and I feel the same way about New Super Mario Wii. Were the Pro/Classic controllers not out when those games appeared?

NSMBW has waggle, therefore Nintendo figured it should be sideways Wiimote only.
Wii 2D platformers having waggle and not being compatible with the Classic/Pro controllers was one of the most frustrating aspects of the Wii era and really made me hate Nintendo around that time.

You know they say that all demons are created equal, but you look at me and you look at Pyro Jack and you can see that statement is not true, hee-ho!
I didn't mind the waggle thing for NSMBW that much, until I got NSMBU and I found myself shaking the gamepad due to getting too used to it.

Why does everyone think I'm going to get in trouble?

Same, but with NSMB2. For NSMBWii and U, if you're playing with just a wiimote, the waggle, is fine, just quickly jerk your arms up like maybe an inch, it's not that big a deal.

It's still utterly pointless, dumb, and prevents your from using the superior, more comfortable and more ergonomic Classic/Pro controllers. It's a net loss in every regard.

A "tiny" loss of not being able to use a comfortable controller, that also somewhat screwed them in regards to future emulation.

NSMBW is my favorite Wii game, but it would have been much more comfortable to play with the Classic or Pro controller. I find the sideways Wiimote really uncomfortable, so it's a shame so many Wii 2D platformers made it manadtory for no reason other than Nintendo being obsessed with waggle around that time. It hampered my experiences with DKCR and KRTD and such as well, which is a shame since it's one of my favorite genres.

I'm not sure why you guys feel the need to defend pointless waggle controls tbh, I thought they were pretty much universally considered to be inane nuisances, unlike true motion controls like in Skyward Sword which actually add to the gameplay experience. I'm really glad that era is over.

The Wiimote was primarily designed to use vertically, the horizontal use was only a minor side feature that as they got further into the lifetime of the system got shoehorned into a lot more games than was originally intended, because Nintendo saw the success of motion controls and figured every game should have some form of waggle even if it added nothing to the gameplay whatsoever and only served as a nuisance for the player.

That still doesn't make it uncomfortable to hold for extended periods of time. But whatever, to each their own. I have bad circulation in my hands and extended use of some controllers makes them get numb but that's not because of their design or anything and I can't see how someone can blame the controller for their discomfort.

The series is pretty repetitive so you might get burned out before you get to the best games. Best just start at the best one because you're probably not going to want or stick with playing all of them.

Battle Network 1 was a cool proof of concept at the time but it is really dated. The mechanics are rough and the game features the absolute worst "dungeon" out of the entire franchise. I'd definitely pass on it for a more refined game. If you're gonna skip it, there's only one major plot point worth knowing: Mega Man is the main character's brother because science.

I'd say pick up BN2 or 3 if you're interested. 2, 3, and 6 can all arguably called the best in the series. 2 is more broken in a fun way with how you can snap it over your knee. 3 I feel has the most refined battle systems of the bunch but is also does have some really bullshit bosses and slightly annoying stretches of internet to traverse. It also has some extremely cool sections, though, so YMMV.

Their stubborn philosophy in that regard also prevented them from the trivially easy task of supporting the classic controller. They chose a dogma of "motion control is in" over accommodating game design where the user could choose, and that's what made a lot of people mad during the latter half of Wii.

Maybe the fact you can't feel the controller due to numbness has something to do with you not finding it uncomfortable?

It's honestly just complete bullshit apologist poo poo to say the wiimote sideways is no less comfortable than a pro controller. That's insanity. I mean it's fine for a bit of NSMBU, but come the gently caress on. It's NOT comfortable.

If you seriously can't tell the difference between a clunky, blocky sideways rectangle and an actual, modern controller with prongs and more and bigger buttons etc. that is ergonomically shaped to better fit your hands, then I don't even know what to tell you. If you had to choose between a NES controller and a PS4 or Xbone one, wouldn't you choose one of the latter every time? Those are like ten times more comfortable, especially for extended periods of gameplay. Controller design, ergonomics and comfort have evolved a lot since the early eighties, which the sideways Wiimote was a throwback to.

Just one game I could have dealt with, I would have just sighed and played the game and moved on. But when they stubbornly started to pointlessly shove it into every single 2D platformer from NSMBW to DKCR to KRTD and so on and actively prohibited you from using the easily available alternatives, it did get more and more frustrating and loathsome.

I fully understand and applaud Skyward Sword and the like being motion controls only. But the aformentioned games being the same is simply indefensible.

To me it did, they're pretty long games that I enjoyed from a gameplay perspective so I replayed them a couple times and as such still have vivid memories of the long periods of discomfort in my hands while my pretty and comfortable Pro Controller was gathering dust right beside me for no reason whatsoever.

The games were good enough to put up with the terrible controller experience, is what I'm saying, but that doesn't make it excusable.

Generally agreed to be #3. Past that I've heard differing opinions on how the games rank up, but I like to think:

#3, for story/gameplay, and the game that wraps up what was going to be the original planned trilogy. Has one of my favorite endings in any video game.
#6, good gameplay, decent story (relatively), lots of little bells and whistles as far as battle transformations and BEAST MODE
#2, overall kinda good
#5, some people rank this one higher but the battle system just felt clunky to me and the story was kinda cliche-filled
Edit: Network Transmission gamecube spinoff game. It's okay. Nothing spectacular.
#1, The gameplay mechanics were still being felt out, missing a bunch of QoL stuff that comes later in the series
Edit: Battle Chip Challenge spinoff game. Non-canon story that's never touched on again in the rest of the series, and the card game-like gameplay isn't very deep at all (and the exact mechanics are unintuitive). Still better than #4, though.
#4... just bad. The way the game is set up you're having to play through it start to finish three times in order to get all the transformations and see all the gameplay scenes, and 80% of the game is set up in a tournament structure that gets olllld before the first playthrough is over. I could write paragraphs and paragraphs on why I hate this game.
