Didn't they say there would be some sort of "event" that unlocks rank lobbies once enough people do a thing? I guess they want to know enough people around to do their weird thing???

To elaborate, you can still join a friend's room for multiplayer matches, but you can't guarantee you will be on the same side when the game finds matches and shuffles players around. It isn't until the August update that you'll actually be able to make and go in as a team of friends.

yeah you cna play with your friends but you always get shuffled around after each match. The team mode thing is one of at least 2 maybe 3 or 4 more modes coming in august.

My guess is that they're going to be on the lookout for cheating/glitches/exploits those first few days and use the gap as a chance to resolve them before people start playing for keepsies

I think all this roll out of features is because Nintendo is honestly afraid we won't understand how to play Splatoon and quit. They think that making us unlock stuff and gating features and so on will help us learn the finer points. Now, how true all of that is would be up to debate.

It could also have been a planned feature from the beginning. They could have hit a snag or something and instead of pushing the game back they wanted to keep on with the deadline and delay that feature. Since the DLC release is 3 months after release instead of more, Im more inclined to think its that.

They just want everybody to learn the game and play some single player so people don't hop into ranked and get smashed and get frustrated and end up low rank before they learn the game. At first only a few people will be of rank to play, so there won't be enough to do matchmaking. As soon as there are enough people of rank to do it, it'll be open. Makes enough sense.

I think I might be getting a bit too hyped for this game, considering I bought a USB network adaptor for my WiiU for the sole reason that I can play Splatoon online at work on lunch breaks when it comes out
