Microsoft really should consider selling fully unlocked Lumia phones with US bands at its stores and online. It would sell a ton but when your market share is this low, you can't really afford to turn away ardent supports clamoring to buy your products. (please please do this for the upcoming flagships lest AT&Trelease them sometime around May 2016....)

The latest update to the Forums reader is throwing me back to the start screen every time I try to enter a thread. Before that it was just the occasional intermittent crashes.

Doomsday Jesus posted:I uninstalled and reinstalled. Everything works now. Here's why that worked. In the new version of AFR, I added a new database column for threads (IsNotified). This was not in the database files you guys have (since they were made before I added it) and Sqlite does not, for whatever reason, create the new column upon seeing it. So instead, it threw an error causing a crash. Uninstalling and reinstalling would fix it. I also pushed a new build to the store that would get rid of and recreate that database, adding the column. How did I figure that out? And if I dig in deeper Hey! There it is! I so wish I added application insights sooner. As for that other exception, it's happening OnNavgate into the bookmark page. I think it's due to launching directly onto the bookmark page with the setting I have set. It does not happpen often though, so I'm not sure why the launch variables are null, nor why that would matter at all. So I need to research it more. But it's a good start. So for the moment, if the app is crashing, try uninstalling and reinstalling. Or wait for the next build to drop (which will basically do the same thing by recreating the database, but you won't have to log in again).

If it's anything like Android, then your updates will come straight from the device manufacturer, not the carrier.

Shumagorath posted:"what everyone's been doing for eight years with Apple". I believe carriers have to approve Apple updates too. Carriers are the primary support mechanism for the device not the OEMs. Apple only has a handful of devices that get the new OS update (usually current, and two previous years so 3 different devices usually). No carrier wants to be the only one in North America that didn't approve the iOS update on day one. Apple got to negotiate more favorable contracts than the other OEMs but carrier approval is still occurring.

Looking forward to hearing about 10080. The last preview had some good ideas but was just way too crude and unfinished for me to use and I rolled back after about 3 hours. Basic things like emails and text messaging were impossibly broken.

I seem to have downloaded OS version 10.0.12562.84 on the preview on my 1520 - 6 columns on the start screen everything squished to the left as if there were space for another two columns. No option to do so as far as I can see. Edit: by 6 columns I mean of the teeny tiles. Also "Search" (ie. the Cortana tile) is hosed despite being set to and also physically being in the US - weird foreign-style accents on the S, a, and A, Cortana doesn't work. It's probably like the 1520 then, in that the extra column isn't optional because of the phone's size.

So I have more Awful Forums Reader stats I got from Azure Application Insights that this thread may find interesting. Note that I only have data from the past few days, so it's not much, but I still find it interesting . First, let's look at crashes. The whole reason I put the insights stuff in was to get quicker access to what's going on when the app shits out. And I managed to release some quick updates to fix those issues. The majority of the crashes were related to the missing column in the SQLite database. I fixed that, so it should no longer be happening. The second and third are related bugs I could never reproduce until I got these crash results. Sometimes the navigation handler would have null values for the page state, so when you navigated from, say, the bookmarks page to a thread and back again, it could crash. I saw the stack traces before but I could never get it to do it until I could see how you guys managed to get it in that state by tracing the page flow (I don't see what you're looking at, but I know that you go from Bookmarks to Threads to X to Y and back again) so I finally fixed that. So now that should be gone. The fourth bug happens rarely, but it's a bitch to figure out. It's a thread marshaling issue that I'll probably bring up in the .NET thread. But basically, if you launch the app, leave the app, and then launch it again from the start menu, you have about a 30% chance of it just crashing. And the stack trace/dump for it is useless, so I'm not sure why it's happening. Again, it's rare, but really annoying. I have yet to reproduce it in the Windows 10 builds though . The last two are emulator bugs that I need to research more, but don't affect native devices. Here's the most popular pages in the app. Of course, Bookmarks is on top, followed by the thread page. Most of you either launch directly to bookmarks or go there first, few threads there, then go back to the main thread list and view threads there. Very few don't use bookmarks at all. People do reply in threads, but no one has actually made a thread on their phone. Makes sense, as I would just go to a full blown computer for that, but since all that code for making it is in a view model it's not hard to expose that on the phone too. No one has selected a smilie and only one has opened the BbCode list. But that's no a surprise, given how many people have made replies. Saclopedia does get looked at, but few actually view entries in it. Private Messages also are getting viewed, but not often. Same goes for the user profile page, although that might be because I don't tell you how to view them (tap on a users avatar). It's good to get this data so I have a sense of what you guys are actually doing with the app. I mean, of course you're viewing threads and bookmarks, but SAclopedia is not a major thing right now, so while it's nice it's there (as a one up over the other Awful apps on different platforms ) I won't focus adding new features to it. Here's the list of devices that you guys are using with the app. This is by unique session (As in, I think, when you launch the app, use it, then close it.). The majority are on the AT&T Lumia 1020, followed by the Icon, the 635, and 920. Virtual is the emulator (so it's me testing it), then the unlocked 930, the 640 (?), and finally the One M8. The 1520 has much less active users so far then I was expecting, which is really good to know. I have a 1520 and judging by this thread, I assumed more did, so I focused on making sure that experience was really good. But since more of you are on smaller or lower end devices, I need to adjust and make sure that's good too. Also, only a handful of you own 520s and use the app. While I want to make sure it works great on such a low end device (since that usually makes it work much better on higher end ones) I don't have to worry so much about it. EDIT: Also something I need to mention. It seems some of you are using the app on Windows 10 devices. The pull to refresh feature and a few other XAML elements are screwed up on it, and I have no intention to fix it. That's why I'm working on a native Windows 10 release. I'm looking for a way for anyone to sideload packages to their phones, but for now if you want the newest actually supported version, you have to go to my github and compile it yourself. Sorry Drastic Actions fucked around with this message at 14:32 on May 15, 2015 |

I'll be one of the 640 users then. I suspect the reason people are going to the SAclopedia but not viewing pages is because the symbol is exactly what you'd expect Settings to look like. I've done it a few times myself.

That was the other thing I was going to say, it's meant to be a book (it is in the Windows 10 version) and I did change it at some point for the 8.1 build, but then it got reverted and I never changed it back. For now it's a (unintentional) sly way of getting you to see I actually got it working.

Both . It's sorted by the forum ID, which does not correspond to how it's shown in the forums. I need to add another field to give the sorting the forums use to present them correctly to you.
