Speaking of Reggie and the 90's, he was pretty high up in the marketing biz for Pizza Hut and is responsible for this piece of nostalgia:

(1) POWER DAGGER is the sound and light source for all the weapons
(2) POWER SWORD has unsheathing and clanging metal sound effects
(3) LASER SWORD powers up with a "whoosh" and strikes with sound and light explosions
(4) ARMY MACHINE GUN will awe opponents with gun and grenade sounds
(5) BAYONET MACHINE GUN combines rapid-fire sounds with bayonet
(6) CYBER-GUN blasts into the future with sounds of laser fire and photon torpedoes
(7) ELIMINATOR TS-7 tops them all with 8 combat light and sound effects

Nope, that was Ed, Edd, and Eddy.

I'm inclined to agree with you, but it's hard to argue with the cost benefit of using Flash/Maya/whatever the kids are using these days. Most cel-animated cartoons cost about $500k per episode, whereas a Flash or hybrid show can cost a fraction of that. Yeah, you end up losing a lot of the OG Cartoon Cartoon throwback Hanna Barbera grit (which I grew up on and subsequently adore), but it opened up the world of animation to a lot of people who didn't have the finances or connections to make their visions come to life. Most of the early to mid-aughts Flash offerings were crap, sure, but at least there were a few shows that managed to do it right (like Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends and Venture Brothers, to name a few), and nowadays we're at a point where the seams are pretty much impossible to see.

Edit: it's also worth noting that if you grew up watching Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network, this guy is the reason why you had good cartoons.

Most of the time Ed, Edd, & Eddy blew, but every now and again they hit genius, like the weird episode where they started doing "experiments" and ended up completely and utterly shattering the 4th wall, doing things like removing Jimmy's cell-shading outline, or playing with the forced perspective. It was a jaw-dropping, amazing episode.

and it's not even really they they used software instead of cels. shmorky (for example) has great animations that make me appreciate what can be done in flash. it's just that so much has a paper cutout shortcut style animation that lacks a lot of the charm of a highly animated, dynamic style. i just associate that with the onset of flash

Exactly. I mean, look at Superjail. It's still drawn out frame by frame, cel-style, but assembled in Flash (or whatever they use). Early Flash cartoons relied way to heavily on motion tweens and it's chintzy-looking as gently caress.

I feel like comparing Classic Simpsons and New Simpsons explains the sort of charm that gets lost in traditional vs computer-aided, or whatever they call it:

Frame-by-frame:

I don't know if The Simpsons is done 100% in Flash/computer generated, or if they do hand-drawn frames and just animate them in Flash, but it's not as good, IMO.

I know that late-season Simpsons, before they went HD, didn't have as much "smearing" as seasons 1-7/8, but it still retained a little bit of that classic style, and that was pretty much all lost when they went HD.

Yeah, if anything smearing should be technically easier to accomplish in Flash. The new animators at The Simpsons are just being cheap/"cost effective."

Pretty much. Anyone could be that lazy even with cel animation. In the case of the Simpsons, that shows problem is that it was more cartoony in its earlier seasons and eventually adhered to being on model too strictly.

My only issue with digital animation is that it can look too clean and bright. But that's mostly a problem of not neutralizing your colors a little bit.

Also that's the show's opening, the episodes themselves would rarely have that level of animation in them. Not that I don't think it looked much better before; the way Simpsons has been visually homogenized over the years is definitely a major detractor for me. It wasn't a show you watched for animation quality, but there was still a lot of character to everything.

To be honest though, this has been a thing for decades. poo poo, 1970's Hanna Barbera used 80% of their operating capital on cocaine used the rest to fart out some of the laziest "walk/stop/move arm/talk" animation that's ever been made. Even Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop, for all their 90's anime glory (gotta keep this semi-topical i guess), blew most of their animation budget on a few detail-oriented scenes and forced the rest of the show to operate on mostly static faces with mouth movements. Maybe it just got more obnoxious in the 90's because it was obvious that companies were spending huge sums on toy R&D and marketing but not putting anything back into the cartoon itself. That was sort of the status quo of the industry at the time, and now we aren't there, and we can have consistently excellent shows like Adventure Time.

It isn't the technique used that makes a show good or bad it's how it's used. Traditional cel-based animation was just as capable of being absolute, utter, complete poo poo as flash animation. The difference is that any idiot with a computer can get their hands on Flash and start cranking stuff out.

Watch the Star Trek cartoon sometime if you think Flash animation is the low point. Trust me, it isn't. You could probably make a better show by just making GBS threads on a camera and recording it slide off.
