I finally broke down and got Photoshop, most of what I did is the trick with luminosity masks to make changes with curves confined to only specific parts of the image, based on the relative intensity of the light. I used to just drop the highlights in Lightroom to try to recover the sky, but the problem there is that, even if you paint in an adjustment brush, it just chops them down uniformly, which I always felt was making the image "flatter" as I was doing it.
