I do like that it ended up meaning maneuver/encirclement warfare was a constant thing and finding the ideal province or 2 in an area to do your breakthrough was always a thing, but yeah there were downsides- and I certainly laugh at mods that double/triple the number of provinces in Africa or Central Asia/Russia for no reason :)

Good day what ho cup of tea
I don't think you need millions of provinces to simulate encirclement warfare - Darkest Hour just has "encirclement" as an event that can happen when Mobility-doctrine armies fight that gives them a ton of bonuses. You don't have to personally perform encirclements - though it can happen, it just tends to be on the scale of tens to hundreds of divisions that get encircled.

If province count is so important for manoeuvre warfare that you end up with province counts in the tens of thousands, it's probably smarter to go the Endless Legend route; keep a province map for ownership/control/resource purposes and defer to an underlying hex grid for movement and unit positioning.

Right but Endless Legend is both turn based and the army sizes are pretty abstract. I'm not sure how that'd translate over to Paradox grand strategy style?

As a fan of 3, I believe there are other bad things. But I do agree a better/larger list of "what to do now that you've won" would be nice. It feels weird saying/pretending you could puppet Russia as if that was a thing that could be done- I'd rather be able to disband a bunch of their army, force them to send me resources, hand over some areas to my allies, and leave the rest to run itself. I think 'Bitter Peace' does allow some of that for Germany beating Russia, but it'd be nice if that was a regular thing you could do.

Units would be "in" a hex and travel between them in exactly the same fashion that they're "in" provinces and travel between those provinces now? Would you be happier with an analogy to Vicky's province/state setup? I mean, if I'm remembering correctly HOI4 already has a province/sub-province setup, so all I'm really saying is just give in already and make them regularly sized/shaped.

The smaller provinces makes the Spanish CIvil War kinda wonky as the AI tends to lack the units to defend the whole front so it ends really fast. In reality division sized units could stretch pretty far if they had to, but in HOI3 they could always only occupy one province.

All of the Hearts of Iron games are tuned around the Eastern Front where both sides have a ton of units so the smaller provinces let you make more stuff happen.

Also, Endless Legend's combat is a travesty.

Would it be significantly improved if they had simply labeled/converted divisions into brigades and made them the 'atomic unit' of the map?

Technically you can have a division that consists of only 1 brigade. It's more an KI problem really.

You can- but let's say you can build your brigades out of 4-5 battalions, just like you build your divisions now. I don't think the IC/manpower are really out of whack for what the game expects you to be able to build, in regards to covering/defending the provinces on the map.

There's a point at which you just get way too many.

And for what it's worth, the HOI3 AI is actually much better with tiny divisions(1-2 brigs).

I don't know if there's been an actual "learning" LP of V2 on SA, but you should defniitely check out PatterSong's various Victoria 2 LP's, since they have really good explanations for the mechanics and the decision-making process.

Also get ready to be a lot more patient than you had to be learning CK2 and EU4. Victoria 2 is a great game but it's much more difficult to wrap your mind around than the other two titles.

Is there a good tutorial on how to manually edit Ck2 -> EU4 converter mods anywhere? I've searched high and low through paradox's forum but I can't find anything except people complaining about the times that patches broke it.

To be specific all I'm really trying to do to change it so that my converted crusader empire has the Jerusalem national ideas instead of those of France.

And while I'm at it, is there any way to "update" a converter mod? As in make it compatible with a newer EU4 patch through editing? The Project Augustus mod seems to have broken converter compatibility as of El Dorado which is a shame because this is the first game of Crusader Kings 2 I've played from start to finish, I can play it by installing an older patch, but I'd really like to use it with El Dorado and the eventual Common Sense upgrades.

Or am I just doomed to have to recreate my game with give_title and set_religion/culture console commands?

Same way you mod anything.

More seriously, though, to fiddle with ideas you want to find the mod directory (it should be somewhere like <userdir>/My Documents/Paradox Interactive/Crusader Kings II/euiv_export/), then look for common/ideas/. In there, you have 02_country_ideas.txt and !_jerusalem_ideas.txt.

In the latter, you want to change

code:
	trigger = {
		tag = KOJ
		religion_group = christian
	}
to

code:
	trigger = {
		OR = {
			tag = KOJ
			tag = <your country's tag>
		}
		religion_group = christian
	}
and, similarly, in the former, change

code:
FRA_ideas = {
	trigger = {
		OR = {
			tag = FRA
			tag = RFR
			AND = {

				OR = {
					primary_culture = cosmopolitan_french
					primary_culture = normand
					primary_culture = occitain
					primary_culture = breton
				}
			}
		}
		NOT = {
			tag = KOJ
		}
	}
}
to

code:
FRA_ideas = {
	trigger = {
		OR = {
			tag = FRA
			tag = RFR
			AND = {

				OR = {
					primary_culture = cosmopolitan_french
					primary_culture = normand
					primary_culture = occitain
					primary_culture = breton
				}
			}
		}
		NOT = {
			tag = KOJ
			tag = <your country's tag>
		}
	}
}
If you don't know what your tag is, find localisation/converted_countries_l_english.yml and search for your country's converted name.

Only in America could you find a way to earn a healthy buck and still keep your attitude on self destruct
So even though I can change the portraits for ministers in HoI3, the names of the ministers remain the same. For example, in the common/countries folder, I've edited the Soviet Union file to be like this:

4007 = {
name = "Mikhail Tukhachevsky"
ideology = leninist
loyalty = 0.50
picture = M4007
chief_of_staff = school_of_manoeuvre
start_date = 1936.1.1
}

But in the game I'm still getting "Michaił Tuchaczewskij" or whatever Polish spelling that Paradox uses. Any ideas how I can fix this? As I said, changing the portrait was easy as pie.

Is each individual minister covered in the localization files? That doesn't seem to make a lot of sense. The name of the minister should be the same for all languages. I'm not changing the minister title, just the name of the actual minister.

EDIT: I just opened all the localization files with Notepad++ and couldn't find any minister names, just minister titles.

You can actually use Hitler and stuff, just not the swastika itself. It's a very peculiar situation that sort of developed through the years, and we still haven't quite figured out how the gently caress video games are going to figure into things (because nobody wants to be the guy that allowed use of swastikas in anything).

Note that this statement is not based on an actual knowledge of the law (§130 StGB is the crucial one, I think?), but on what I've seen in games. Hitler pretty much never gets censored, but the swastika always.

EDIT: Wait, no, it's not §130 StGB (Agitation of the People), but §86 StGB (Dissemination of Means of Propaganda of Unconstitutional Organizations), particularly §86a StGB (Use of Symbols of Unconstitutional Organizations). So using Hitler's face and name doesn't fall under dissemination of propaganda, but using the swastika definitely falls under use of symbols of unconstitutional organiztions.
