Headphone virtualisation is actually pretty interesting. Don't feel the need to buy a headphone with multiple drivers for each ear, it's all down to binaural signal processing. Unfortunately I can't make any consumer recommendations.

I always wondered how multiple speakers in one ear actually did any of the stuff they claim about "directional sound"...

There are some games with very good sound localization. That used to be one of the things Soundblaster and co. were pushing for before the sound card market quietly died. With the Oculus Rift pushing hard for 3D audio, I imagine it will become a thing again.

Right now, if your game supports 7.1, Dolby Headphone can do some pretty cool things with it.

You don't need special headphones to use it, so just get whatever fits in your budget that you like. I have the Sennheiser HD598's, and I'm very happy with them for gaming.

Budget - $50-$100
Source - PC Computer with onboard sound
Isolation Requirements - I don't want any or barely any noise bleeding. I don't mind hearing the outside but I don't wnat the world to listen to me listening 2 porn
Preferred Type of Headphone - Over ear.
Past Headphones - Sennheiser Wireless RS 130. They were amazing, I loved them. They didn't leak noise. Then they broke. And Senny doesn't make them anymore. I bought a pair of HD 555's and they're miserable and leak noise like crazy. Unusuable. I don't care if they're wireless or not, i'd perfer it. I just don't want to leak noise!

Also no bluetooth, as they don't work with my computer and such.

Please help goons :( :(

Not sure if any of y'all audionerds are around, but it's worth a shot:

I need near in-ears for my phone. Mostly for running, but for occasional adventures that a mic would be nice for

Budget - <$50, but willing to go a bit over, I guess

Source - Android Phone - HTC One M8 if that matters...

Isolation Requirements - Preferable, but since I'm talking about IEMs, I'm assuming this won't be an issue

Preferred Type of Headphone - IEM

Preferred Tonal Balance - Probably balanced? I want to be able to use something that sounds okay with various tunes and PTT voice stuff

Past Headphones - All the previous IEMs I've had have come from my phones (Samsung Galaxy S3, Motorola Droid), and I never had any major issues. All my other headphones are over-ears that I'm totally happy with using for work/play at my desk

Preferred Music - Electronic (House, Nu Disco, Glitch Hop, Not a lot of Wub-wubby stuff), Punk Rock, Classic Rock.

I'd like to have something with an in-line mic without compromising too much on audio quality, if possible. I was looking at the older Steelseries Flux IEMs, but I'm naturally wary of buying most things branded as :pcgaming: GAMING EQUIPMENT :pcgaming: Help me, goons!

The answer is... 42
Budget - Approx $100 total. Able to go over a bit if needed.

Source - Mix of M7 HTC-One and Toshiba CB2. Something that could plug into my Blackstar HT-1 and sound good would be great as well.

Isolation Requirements - I'd like to be able to tune everything out while at the gym, but it's not a dealbreaker.

Preferred Type of Headphone - IEM preferred for a single solution, IEM + on ear if I can fit two in the budget.

Preferred Tonal Balance - Balanced for sure. I have tinnitus and harsh treble is very uncomfortable. While I don't want ultra-muddy bass, I would like angsty metalcore breakdowns to have some punch to them.

Past Headphones - I have a pair of $6 Panasonic earbuds off amazon (RPHJE120K I think) that I've been decently pleased with.

Preferred Music - A metric fuckton of metal for the gym. I listen to just about everything else outside of that though.

I'm looking for something that will survive gym use, as well as daily use. If I need to split that into two different headphones I'm ok with that, but I'd like to get as much as possible for the money. Any help would be appreciated!

Edit: Super ultra bonus points for items purchasable via Amazon.

Does anyone have experience with the v-moda boom mic paired with one of their headsets or another compatible pair, Philips X1? Is this an alright idea or will I be horribly disappointed for the money spent.

Who will win the greatest battle of them all?

Hello headphone thread, I could use some help researching an upgrade.

I'm getting buzzing and interference on my Klipsch X10's as I turn the 3.5mm connector and the left channel is intermittently not outputting sound. Current contenders for me are Hifiman RE 400, Fischer Audio Eterna, VSonic VSD1S

Budget - $100
Source - iPod touch 1G, Nexus 5
Isolation Requirements - Comfort and isolation are why I loved the X10's so much. Definitely my absolute highest priorities since I use these while traveling.
Preferred Type of Headphone - IEM
Preferred Tonal Balance - Something more all around that can handle a wide variety of music genres with good balance, accuracy, instrument separation, and space
Past Headphones - Klipsch X10, Sennheiser CX300, Monoprice 8320,
Preferred Music - Mostly electronic music, some hip hop and rock

Budget - $50 max
Source - My phone (HTC One M8), occasionally my computer
Isolation Requirements - Closed. I want these for listening on transit/plane rides or when my wife is watching TV in the same room
Preferred Type of Headphone - On or Over ear. Unfortunately, in-ear drivers feel real weird and bother me.
Preferred Tonal Balance - Balanced, but a little bassy is fine
Past Headphones - My primary headphones are KSC 75s since I am cheap and I like that they are small ear clips. My only real complaint is how loud they are
Preferred Music - A massively wide array of genres

I know that's a really small budget, and stretching could probably really open up my options, but I don't want to spend more than that if possible.

Is there a thread for DAC/amps? Search shows nothing.

I'm looking for a recommendation for a headphone amp/DAC for my Shure 1540's, or if someone feels it wouldn't be worthwhile, I'd like to know that as well. I've never used a DAC or amp and I use the headphones exclusively at my computer for listening to music/gaming/watching movies, currently running off of my motherboard port. I do not require the unit to be portable. I mostly listen to electronic music and if it helps, I could actually use a little bit more bass/low end warmth (yes I know the 1540's are bass boosted). I've heard amps based off a tube can provide this.

Questions: If I take my headphones into a long + mcquade or something will I be able to try different amps? Do many amps provide the ability to adjust EQ via the amp (I don't see a row of sliders on them)?

Budget - ~$50
Source – My android wear watch via bluetooth
Isolation Requirements – It would be nice for the noisy workout conditions
Preferred Type of Headphone - IEM
Preferred Tonal Balance - Balanced
Past Headphones – Most of the previous headphones I’ve had were over the ear or on ear so not really relevant here.
Preferred Music – Classic Rock, Nu Disco, Podcasts

I’m looking for a pair of Bluetooth headphones to go with my android wear watch so I can work out without taking my phone with me and risking it being damaged. I found a couple that seem to have reasonable reviews.

The Sony SBH80 seems to have some really good reviews and bulk of the electronics are in the neck wire so it won’t put a lot of pressure on my ears from the weight. I’d expect ones like these to be a lot less likely to fall out while running or riding a bike. Problem is they are out of the price range and would be too expensive to replace if they get damaged while out and about.

I was also at looking at the Liger® XS1 which is a lot cheaper. It would be a lot easier to replace if they get damaged. I don’t really need APT-X because the watch doesn’t support it so the fact that they don’t have it isn’t really much of a downside.

Does anyone here have any other suggestions?

Budget - $100-125 (Amazon preferred)
Source - iPhone and iPad
Isolation Requirements - Closed as possible. I ride the train to work every day
Preferred Type of Headphone - IEM or over ear if its small enough and can easily fit into a backpack (bonus if they have inline mic and controls)
Preferred Tonal Balance - Balanced but I don't mind a little bass
Past Headphones - Bose QC 15 (still use them at home), Philips SHS8100 for traveling/working out and lovely included iPhone 5s headphones
Preferred Music - Podcasts and a wide array of music types.

I'm considering Bluetooth so I can continue to listen to my devices at work. I have a large desk with a lot of computers I have to swing over to constantly, so not having to worry about wires while I'm moving around would be nice.

If you want to be smart with your money don't give any kickstarter any amount of money. There's more disappointment than positive on that site, especially when it comes to hardware. If they were actually business savy people with viable business strategies then they wouldn't turn to kickstarter to get funding.

The Schiit Magni 2 and Schiit Modi 2 is an excellent amplifier and DAC combination with a huge amount of power that will power almost anything you will plug into it. As a warning though, you might not notice any difference with an amp/DAC.

Yeah, I wasn't exactly planning on getting it anyways. I'm perfectly content with my ATH-M50's. Wouldn't mind upgrading to something with a harder bass kick though., but I would hardpressed to give up the overall sound quality and crispness of it all

The "Schiit Stack" was already recommended, that is the go-to recommendation since it is at the brink of diminishing returns in terms of price. I needed something to use for laptops as well so I got a Fiio E10k, it's a great little DAC+amp, but honestly if it's doing it's job right, it shouldn't sound too different from your on-board sound especially on those headphones. I only really got one to get rid of electrical noise when using the front input jack on my PC and also to have a more convenient place to plug in headphones on my desk (rather than the PC tower under my desk)

Are there any solid bluetooth headsets out there that are suitable for daily subway commutes? IEM preferred, I think I look like a target if I'm wearing big headphones in the neighborhood I live in for the most part.

I've managed to ruin 3 pairs of IEM's this year, I think the way I walk and how deep my pockets are and how the iphone 6 sits in them just puts some weird strain on the cable and things with wires just don't last.

eta: A better question, what's the price point where you get more than 4-5hrs of battery life in a bluetooth IEM, because 4hrs from the Brainwavz BLU-100 seems a bit short but for $40 maybe I don't care so much.

Budget - Hoping for $50-100, but I can stretch that if the benefits are there
Source - PC onboard sound
Isolation Requirements - Yes please
Preferred Type of Headphone - Circumaural, wireless
Preferred Tonal Balance - Balanced
Past Headphones - Sony MDR-V6 (love these), Beyer DT770 (sound great but they give me a headache after half an hour), Koss portables
Preferred Music - For these headphones, ambient, post-rock, acoustic

My new job is in a lab with a lot of variable fan noise in the background. Sound quality is less important than comfort and isolation. I don't usually listen to music at work, but I'd still rather have a half-decent set of wireless headphones than just earmuffs.

I'm not a fan of in-ear headphones. Earplugs and earbuds never seem to fit me right and I'd like something I can take off quickly.

Is there anything in particular I should look for, or should I just go by Amazon ratings? I see they have the Sennheiser RS 120 in my price range, and there's a massdrop going on for the Meelectronics Matrix2 which has good ratings.

They're $25 headphones and TBH I think anyone that likes the Piston 2 is a huge basshead because they sound like Beats. No idea about the 3. Either way, it's $25 headphones, you're out nothing. Thanks. I appreciate the help!

Anyone tried the V-Moda m-100's?

I have them, love them. Sound is great ( somewhat v shaped), they're comfy and indestructible.

Other options to consider are the Nad viso hp50 (better sound, looks worse), sennheiser momentum, Mr speakers mad dog (needs amp).

I checked out the sound isolation on them... bit noisey. I'd get crucified on the trains quiet carriage.

I only listen to music at max volume, because Drum n Bass. Waiting for someone i know to buy the Aiaiai TMA-2's so i can suss them.

You won't be listening to any music at max volume if you're getting higher quality headphones. Presumably you're buying an amp with them, and you'll damage your hearing and distort the sound at max volume.
