How do you guys manage shakedowns in large prisons?

I'm at about 1200 and a shakedown disrupts pathfinding to the point that a few hundred starve to death, riots start and everyone starts to kill each other. After locking everything down and gradually letting people out to eat I had about 300 inmates left :(

Don't do a full shakedown, just do cell block by cell block.

How's the latest release? Still generally good? Close enough to a real game that I wouldn't regret paying $6 for it?

You will at a minimum get $6 worth of fun from it. If it was between eating and PA then id eat.. but if you have a spare $6 then buy it.

The real question is how do I assign 3 of my 10 guards a patrol route, which I paid at least $1000 to know how to do and still don't.

The devs have proven themselves to be extremely competent so I honestly shouldn't expect the quality to drop at any point, well worth the price in my opinion.

PA is pretty far along, enough that it's arguably worth a decent amount more than $6, and the developers have consistently made one significant update per month for over a year now, I think it's pretty much the best execution of Early Access I've seen yet and it's already one of the best tycoon games I've ever played.

Open the deployment menu, click patrols, draw a patrol path, then click it so a little guard dot shows up next to it.

So today, I noticed my prison cooks just refuse to cook meals.

I have food in the kitchen.
I have deleted and readded both the fridges and the cooker (stoves).
I have 1 space between the kitchen and the canteen.
I even created a second path from the entrance incase it was getting the food to the kitchen.

My cooks just refuse to cook meals. Ever.

I have flipped 1 of my serving tables incase they were backwards.

I checked the logistics to see if that was the issue, it won't let me draw a line to my cell areas, but to an area that is connected, and I can only draw to 1 spot. This spot happens to be in my chapel. It's the only spot I can connect it. No matter where I click, it goes to that spot.

I can't seem to figure out how to fix this, but the riots from starvation is getting annoying. Anyone have any ideas? It used to work the last time I played, and I haven't changed my style at all. They were making meals in the beginning of this prison with this layout. When the logistics ability appeared, they stopped working and now I can't seem to fix it.

I like the Clearer needs icon mod and the one that sanitizes the bios. I hate reading about a prisoner who raped a sheep but is in prison for murder.

I'm not thinking it's a water issue, because I did have a water issue when I first built it, and the water drop was flashing until I fixed it. I've tried resetting my kitchen and canteen rooms. I tried all the other things I listed. It worked when I last played, so I don't know what I'm doing wrong. It was working when I first built it as well.

Ah, to be a Hero... Keeping such company...
Yea, the reason the red line comes from chapel is because that's the center of your huge cell block that covers reception and library and all the other rooms too.

It's probably laundry and reception that are messing with the food logistics, because they're laundry logistics rooms.

I'm not going to tell you this is the solution, but I had this same problem tonight with my dual kitchens only serving 2/3 canteens and the only thing that fixed it was to dezone everything (this includes deployment zones and rooms ie: kitchen/canteen) involved with logisitics. Once I dezoned the rooms and and reset min, pc, max, normal and then redrew the Kitchens and Canteens everything worked.

Also, if you draw a line from the cells to the Canteen (hold shift to do more than one) it resets the Predicted meal amount, which might fix your problem as well.

Yeah you can't actually "run out" of water at all, but the small pipes have a maximum range. I'm not sure what that amount is exactly because I've never actually hit it, but it's certainly low enough that you can't just use little pipes through your entire prison and expect everything to work.

Generally the way I lay things out is have big pipes surrounding the buildings and then running smaller pipes out from wherever the closest big pipe is. Sometimes I have a big pipe cutting through the middle of a big building, but you should generally try to avoid that because prisoners can tunnel through big pipe tiles much faster. You should also definitely avoid ever having your large pipes go outside the outside wall.

On the other hand, you could intentionally run a big pipe through your cell block. Prisoners will ALWAYS take the path of least resistance when tunneling so if there's a big obvious conduit like that, all the tunnels will route through it. This lets you put a dog patrol right on top of it so it'll very easily catch anyone making a tunnel.

Ohhhh a penny just dropped. My practice was to run the trunk pipe through the middle of each cell block (usually under the toilets!) for convenience when building the cells and hooking everything up. Will probably revise that.

I've never had anyone actually manage to escape via the pipeline as I get paranoid and run searches on cell blocks fairly often, but yeah, I'm going to rethink that.

Usually my escape attempts have been more of the Benny Hill Yakkety Sax variety where the prisoner bumrushes the front gates.

Prisoners are more likely to participate in reform programs when they are not suppressed, and have their needs well taken care of.

And armed guards automatically cause lots of suppression so even though putting armed guards in the cafeteria will keep those silly bastards from killing each other all the time, no one will go to your reform programs.

Speaking of food, if they have access to food will they eat in free time slots?

Coolguye

Yes, but the only time you get access to food is during Eat periods. Basically, Free Time will mean you can finish your meal if you've got one, but you can't go get chow.

It's probably better to just put stuff into the canteen to allow prisoners to handle needs if they're good on food. Some toilets, TVs, and phones will allow people to handle their needs once they're through eating and mostly get rid of the need for free time.

First time planning out a prison before making it:

Tried to make it as modular as possible, each wing holds 10 prisoners, with two very tight shower sections at the start of each wing, top middle is the cantina, while the bottom middle is common room and yard. Every other room at the end of the wings are big enough to house any room.
And finally two fences(one normal one perimeter) to stop people from getting out.

This is my first try to fulfill Cell Block E (500 cells), any feedback and ideas appreciated:

Maximum security on the upper left, then death row and super max, across the road PC wing on the upper part, low security below; PC and low sec mostly share their work and recreational areas. As you can see, in the PC wing there is an open space which at some point will become workshop for PC/low.

The entire large complex on the left side of the road besides the separete wings is mixed medium and low, with the exception of lower leftside cell area and the largest canteen, which are medium only.

The only actual problem is that I have to keep an armed guard at the medsec shower to suppress the morning riots since I designed it to be too small. I am running 3 medium quantity/high quality meals per day; with 3+2 work hour blocks, everyone else besides supermarx and obviously death row working.

Currently the place houses ~450 inmates and needs one additional dormitory on the lowsec side to complete the 500. Runs like an rear end though, 250+ staff members and 100+ daily visitors in addition of 400+ imates really kills the processor.

Any ideas on how to improve/make this more size-efficient without making it a death camp? Also, is it normal that without "shower"-regime the inmates do not take enough showers and riot for hygiene? I remember that at some point you could drop it off, now I tried and two days --> riot.

EDIT: Also, as viewable in the picture, my workers managed to somehow gently caress up a construction site to expand the wing section-serving kitchens doorway. The staff door there works, and the walls seem to be solid, but the construction site graphics just don't seem to disappear nor are there any tasks associated to the construction.
