Blacks in the back.
At least Schefter isn't as blatant a shill about who his sources are as Woj at yahoo! (NBA). For instance, he was 2 steps short of a professional PR rep for Joe Dumars. Woj is basically a stenographer for some people.

It says a lot about Schefter and his actual clout that ESPN doesn't feel compelled to throw his expertise in people's faces. What I mean by that, is no one questions he's in the position he's in, so they don't have to sell him.

Mel Kiper and Kirk Herbstreit on the other hand...

Also if you're willing to play ball on hyping up guys during FA. Schefter I think is probably one of the better at it because he never seems like a shill or carrying water for people. I remember how pissed he was during the whole Ray Rice thing when he realized Goodell played him.

I think it's hilarious how hard he's trying to making this look. Why not plug in a headset so it doesn't look like you woke up with a crick in your neck?

He could be in a recliner talking on the headset and typing instant messages on his other phone. No, no, no... He has to look uncomfortable so people respect the effort.

Lets not get crazy, Mel. He operates exclusively in social media; a laptop would discredit him more than leaking a false story.

quote:

My first thought after this pick: Rod Marinelli’s going to have Greg Hardy and Randy Gregory in his defensive team meeting room. Hope he’s ready. The Cowboys honestly considered Gregory in the first round, too, before going for another need guy, cornerback Byron Jones of UConn. When it got close to pick 60, I’m told a serious conversation wasn’t needed; Gregory was such a strong candidate as a player that Dallas was willing to work with him on his marijuana history, and his history of depression and anxiety, according to SI.com’s Don Banks. Other reports say Gregory was either bipolar or had some other personality disorder that made it difficult for him to focus on football, or anything, for long periods. Gregory, without question, was a top-10 value on talent alone. But he tumbled down so many draft boards because of his character flaws. Now the 65-year-old Marinelli will ride herd on Hardy and Gregory, two players most teams in the league wouldn’t let in the front door of their buildings. Now whether the talent can stay on the field, and on the roster, is the big test for Marinelli and coach Jason Garrett.

Peter King is now apologizing profusely on Twitter for calling Randy Gregory's marijuana use/depression/anxiety/etc. "character flaws."

Maybe it doesn't really matter anymore.
So, a somewhat well-known Broncos blogger, It's All Over Fatman, decided to call it quits this week. Not big news at all, but it's the offseason, and I thought this section about the "why" was pretty :drat: :

quote:

It's become increasingly difficult for me to think about football outside the context of the brutal long term physical and cognitive toll the sport exacts upon its players. This would be somewhat more palatable if I thought the league and its owners cared about their current and former players to a greater extent than a settled class action lawsuit dictates. Their actions consistently suggest otherwise.

Given those long-term consequences, I’ve known for quite some time that I wouldn't want my son to ever play tackle football. More recently, I realized I didn't necessarily want him to become a fan. Sure, I'll have far more control over the former than the latter, but what example would I be setting by continuing to pour so much energy into chronicling and analyzing the NFL?

Teams pump players full of (performance enhancing) narcotics to mask pain, stay on the field, and risk more serious injury. But when those players turn to HGH to help rebound from this increasingly brutal sport (hello, Thursday Night Football), they're branded as cheaters. Owners hold cities up for hundreds of millions of dollars in stadium subsidies, while simultaneously demonizing players who seek to maximize their earning potential during limited career spans.

Some of the other staff kinda sucks, but Simmons was best at this point when he wasn't seen or heard. He was best at getting other people exposure to say their much better and well thought out ideas.
