Do we have a thread devoted specifically to the various refugee issues, or are they already covered in country threads, ie Auspol? I'd like to learn more about the subject outside of the Americas.

By continually raising the minimum wage, more and more people can leave their dead-end jobs. Eventually machines can take over menial labor. AGC.

With increasing automation and skyrocketing efficiency, the company was able to offer generous paychecks and perks to employees, allowing them to eventually retire or start their own ventures leaving more resources for remaining workers. Eventually, the company is streamlined into a high-tech, high-efficiency moneymaking model funneling cash straight to the shareholders. Capitalist success story, or socialist nightmare scenario?

Oooh, fun, simultaneous equations. Well, either each of those signs is an additional raise every time, or more likely the total raise. Looking at the first we get 5(x+15)=y 4(x+15+20)=y 3(x+15+20+25)=y 2(x+15+20+25+50)=y x+15+20+25+50+100=y so clearly, 2x+30+40+50+100=x+15+20+25+50+100 so 2x+220 = x+210 so x = -10 -10+15+20+25+50+100= 200 so 5(15-10) = 200 25=200 Uh, clearly he meant total raise then. Looking at that, we get 5(x+15)=y 4(x+20)=y 3(x+25)=y 2(x+50)=y x+100=y 2x+100=x+100, so x=0. y=100 Hence 3(0+25)=100 75=100. Gee, I'm starting to think that just maybe this math doesn't add up!

There were no raises; they were about to get laid off anyway.

I hate this lovely argument. Business is not arithmetic, idiot. In the universe where this cartoon takes place, that boss just hired the extra hands around to be nice and give money to people. He had to fire them when minimum wage went up, because his labor cost has to be exactly fixed for some reason. In real life, he hired the number of people needed to do the job, and can't operate with fewer.

In Norway Australia is pretty known as being rotten towards refuges, after a norwegian ship was highjacked by australian special forces, because it had picked up boat refugees whose conditions were so bad that the captain believed the best course of action was to go to Australia, where the Australian Government decided the best course of action was to order the ship out of Australian waters at gunpoint. Nah, that would change the order they're read in and the current order makes more sense. It would have worked better as a two-panel cartoon, though, so you don't have to read the second half of it upside down. Interesting concept, doesn't really work in practice.

Increasing wages for entry level workers will improve their job satisfaction and productivity such that the same amount of work can be done with less workers. Eventually, technology will make many of these jobs obsolete, at which point we will have to rethink capitalist policy to be able to provide a decent quality of life for the now unemployed hordes.
