My problem with it is how it seems to equate emotional abuse (which the writer seemed to be tipping into with her hamburger screed) and criticism/"nagging", though I will admit the equivalence is more implied than anything.

It's entirely possible to criticize and/or nag someone without being abusive. It's also possible to be abusive when doing so. This happens with both men and women, and understanding how to communicate criticism properly is incredibly important.

The hamburger screed ventures into abuse when she takes it from a minor mistake (where the relevant data of fat percentage wasn't supplied, and isn't something a non-cook would check) to a tirade about how clearly he doesn't care about her or how she feels because he never checked the label of the ground beef that she buys. That's absurd.

I've spoken to friends whose boyfriends have pulled similar poo poo over being bought the "wrong" concert tickets, or the wrong food, or whatever else. It's a bad way to handle things in a relationship, and if taken to extremes can definitely result in am abusive situation.

I think ultimately the whole thing is coming across differently to different people. I've seen it posted by women who then say that they have been doing the same thing, which is great if it's actually causing people to rethink how they're treating their spouses. However the "nagging housewife" is a pretty broad stereotype that needs to die.

Actually, similar to that, someone recently posted this bad joke about nagging wives as an example of how men are being subjugated and feminists aren't out to stop this from happening. He literally equated the plight of victims of sex trafficking with dudes being told they can't visit a strip club after someone told him that it was just a bad joke.

quote:

Hey guys, I'm going to Saudi Arabia so I can buy a trafficked teenage runaway and keep her as a gently caress pig in my basement and abuse her rear end in a top hat whenever I feel like it. Hey don't get mad I'm just joking.

and he had this to say about the show "Everybody Loves Raymond"

quote:

Do you remember that sitcom Everbody Loves Raymond? The entire show was about a man who is dominated and abused by his wife. But hey, it's funny, and no one complains. If this joke were about how a man dominates his wife, and the wife was making the joke, some people might call it a cry for help. But this, this is funny. Haha.

ELR is a casual depiction of socially acceptable abuse. It's the equivalent of a show called "Bobby Bitch Slaps Sue" about a redneck who smacks his woman every time she talks out of turn. Queue laugh track!

And he's currently on a roll with that "ENVIRONMENTALISTS PROTESTING BIG OIL WITH PRODUCTS MADE FROM OIL" macro where his main argument is that a kayak is a luxury item and if you own one and use it to protest big oil you are a hypocrite.

Never not seen it, although it's usually "market ground beef" which is a mix of all the other leftover trimmings. Which was the joke comment, the mix makes it taste way better and most of the fat renders out, if there's not enough fat to start with it gets too dry. Ever since I was told by a chef that 80/20 was the minimum and never use a single 'type' like ground sirloin or chuck, you want the mix of different cuts, never went back. Plus, the Rothschilds are an old and presumably large banking family, so I would not be surprised if between all the 8th cousins three times removed the extended family actually is worth a trillion or so, or more once you start adding in "Hyphen-Hyphen-Blueblood Rothschild manages the Central Bank of Nigeria, which is worth $Lots". To be fair, it hasn't furthered anything yet. Since it's not in the books we don't know what it will end up meaning in the show. I also don't think anyone who watched it could really get "woo rape!" from that scene. And whether they show it or not, Sansa marrying Ramsay means Ramsay was going to consummate the marriage to make it official, with or without her permission. It's the predictable result of Sansa going back to Winterfell and Ramsay being who he is. So either they show it on the periphery like they did, or not show it and have Sansa not changed despite being raped, or not show it and have Sansa suddenly change without an on screen reason for it.

I understand why it's getting the attention it's getting, it's the most popular show on TV, but I think it's a little premature to judge if it was terrible thing for the show to do because we don't know how they will go forward.
