Normal people might reasonably go

"OK so these electrical work bullet points, I can't help but remember how we just recently had a huge shutdown and a $30k bill fixing 'hackerspace' electrical work. Is doing our own wiring something we should really be doing?"

"Self-done electrical work is legal as long as it is up to code, and the people doing the work mentioned do know their stuff so we're not repeating the past, at least not in this instance."

Maybe even a

"Perhaps this is an opportunity for me to run a meeting on basic electrical code so that you can understand what you see when you look at wiring in a house or building. You won't be an electrician if you attend this but at least you'll understand what you're looking at and know what some red flags are. Like help members recognize whether someone who might start wiring poo poo down the line knows what they're doing or not. Anybody interested?"

Of course that's a wasted opportunity to get defensive and pissy. As much as I'd love to make some snarky comment about how this is oh so hackerspace-ish the truth is it's just a people thing. (It's still totally a hackerspace nerd thing though)

most normal adult people resent being unconditional-love-mothered and showered with praise for any little thing because it seems patronizing

hackerspace nerds however do not

quote:

Alex: I love Noisebridge. Was a member, moved to Sillicon Valley and membershipped lapsed. Thought about joining Hacker Dojo, it is however now a dictatorship. Scared me, made me want to come back to Noisebridge and make people want to become members. Main goal to make Noisebridge more friendly to new people (Ex: 3D Occulus Noisebridge).
J: What is your take on consensus? Ex not consense.
Alex: Have long, open, public discussions prior to consensus coming to a meeting. I would block a proposal to make Noisebridge a co-working facility. Diffcult decisions in the past have to do with access and membership. I notice Noisebridge being more inclusive for real use. In the past, Noisebridge was used as a day-care facility, great non-participation. Had been plenty of controversial proposals, were all complex. These are issues that require care. Would be sad if Noisebridge became a place that people could not discover.
Monad: Alex is great, very productive. He's not one to twiddle his thumb or watch porn. Alex: Except maybe at 5MoF.
Dan: How do you see blocking?
Alex: Things that are irreversable (Ex change of governance), I would block. For reversible things, I would abstain. In general I prefer to accept and see how things go, even if I disagree. "A poor plan violently executed today is better than a plan tomorrow".
Dan: What then after the block?
Alex: Go on the record explaining why blocking. There's a discussion that needs to happend, beginning of an argument.
Monad: Point of clairification.. blocking membership requires no explination.
Jade: Why do you want to become a member?
Alex: Noisebridge is a spiritual home that I want to see grow and thrive. Upsetting if the future of that home ever comes into doubt.
Carl: Alex has been coming for many years. A positive contributor to the space. High endorsements.
Torrie: What makes you happy?
Alex: People learning and becoming hackers.
Jade: How is access control and membership related?
Alex: In some hackerspaces you will get hasseled if your not a paying member. Sometimes about exclusivity, sometimes financials. Noisebridge has open door hours, where people can get in. Had conflicts with a completely open door, current access control found a balance that works. I can tell people about Noisebridge, and they can come and get in. Not too many weird people that don't belong, yet people can still get in.
Nikita: What is a hacker?
Alex: People who take things about and put them back together. Hacking-hacking or hacker-hackers specify the infosec hackers.
Torrie: What have you contributed to Noisebridge?
Alex: Made the bathroom sign. Talk a class here. Helped with Maker Faire stuff. Making a 3D Noisebridge. In the future, I would like to make more signage.
Alex departs and the notetaker takes a break...
[edit] It is consensed that Alex is a Member of Noisebridge

Please, don't gently caress around in elevator hoistways or permit anyone else to do so who doesn't know about elevators. Being crushed into a fine paste by the counterweight or the car is not something you want to happen.

If you are going to try to hide in an elevator system though, hide in the machine room or something. You can usually access it from the main shaft, often the elevator can take you to the machine room if you find the right panel. Just... gently caress man don't get killed by an elevator.

Not to mention that the best way for the average person to get a laser is to buy a broken scientific laser and repair it.

Thats a technical solution to a social problem. Throwing more computers at the problem won't work. My dayjob is computering and I'm aiming for less of that. Plus, if we did catch someone sleeping at the space then we'd need to figure out how they got in and who let them in and all that less-than-fun emotional hard stuff. I mean, we're all making sure that the space is completely and totally empty of non-members when you leave for the night, right? Its impossible for a non-member we haven't already granted our complete trust

"Torrie, you should write a sad email and call out the shitheads who are sleeping in the space!" --Another noisebridger (paraphrased)

I can guarantee that they're not reading noisebridge-discuss, because why would someone who doesn't give a poo poo about the space want to keep up with things, hmm? noisebridge-discuss is a good shibboleth in this respect; If they read discuss they probably do give a poo poo about the space.

Yeah. We were discussing ^H in a LAN thread and someone quoted horrible things from noisebridge. I had known it was a shithole since I first heard about it years ago, but I saw this thread existed and was active, so I figured I'd read the last 2 pages.

loving around with lasers isn't that bad. I mean like, you pretty much have to try to blind yourself. You'd have to not wear your safety goggles, and then loving put your eye in the beam(or a reflection thereof, which is the real danger) but even then the kinds of lasers you can get when you don't have much money are going to be either high-precision low power (not very harmful) or cutting lasers (CO2 etc) in which case you would have to be the king of the bonglords to end up in a situation where you make contact with the beam.

I know normal people don't want technical solutions to social problems, but at Noisebridge I thought that was the norm. I think really they want webcams to work out where people are sleeping, systems to automatically post the photos of those people to https://noisebridge.net/wiki/86, then have the front door system also have a webcam which compares your picture to any of those on the 86 page and deny those people entry.
