I am currently enamored with the Scalaron Repeater and desperately want both a small mount and large mount version of it. I am aware the Linear Pulse Gun is essentially what a small version of the Repeater would be but would love the idea of a small, ammo-fed weapon (with slightly better range than the LPG) that could create bullet-hell scenarios at the Frigate level. On the large end of the scale, a double or triple-barreled version with about 800 range would be awesome. As with the medium-mount version, it would be on the high-end of ordinance point cost relative to its large energy mount cousins but have extremely impressive raw damage output if you get close enough. I would hope on a longer-range version there would be slightly faster projectile speed to compensate: the accuracy would still be low but you wouldn't have to lead the target by 3 ship-lengths.

That'd mean putting in a horrifying space monster faction, which would be weird.

I mean, let's say a horrifying space monster is lying in wait, and being hostile to everything it hates me even more when it catches sight of me trading on a planet.

Would make for entertaining issues when the horrifying space monster becomes available for sale in a shipyard, or becomes boardable after combat.

As you can see, while flashy, it takes a pretty big commitment to break even a medium strength shield with this ship. For best results, flank targets or be the glass cannon while your fleet distracts them.

The latest dev blog is in, and it's all about terrain in space.

Some cool stuff in there, and its neat that there'll be more opportunities to do stuff with larger fleets, and to play ambusher.

The thing I'm nervous about is there's all this campaign stuff coming, but as far as I'm aware no mention of the insta-battles, which is leading me to believe that he's going to stick with them since changing that would likely mean changing all this stuff

Right now as soon as one fleet bumps into another one a bunch of ships instantly blow up and then they move on. All these travel map changes are coming down the pipe, but nothings been said about the instant fleet combat. Which is making me think he's going to stick with that, since to me it seems like combat would need to be adjusted before these other map changes

I guess I don't see another way to represent the battles when a day takes like 10 seconds while traveling? Is instant fleet combat considered a bad thing? I guess I'm out of the loop on this issue.

I guess that you could put in a delay afterwards as the victorious fleet salvages and performs repairs, but that'd be frustrating as a player. I think that battles firing out a sensor ping would work well, though. Intensity depending on the number and size of ships that got blown up.

I suppose it'd be neat too if some weapons were "low-signature" to help would-be pirates be a complete bastard with a bit more privacy by reducing those ping sizes, but that kind of system seems a whole lot of work.

I also wouldn't mind some weapons that make it more likely a ship is salvagable.

FooF
Mar 26, 2010
Ok, I kind of get what the issue is about.

With the new sensors mechanic, I think a battle should have some huge sensor signatures, even if you can't tell what fleets are engaged. The aforementioned idea of a "battle" ping would make sense. Larger battles (some combination of # of ships involved and ship sizes) would give off larger pings, though it wouldn't necessarily be due to ships exploding.

Let's say a battle takes 5 "traveling" seconds. During that time, the ping goes off and even if you're on the opposite end of the system, you know the size of the battle is occurring. If you're at a more reasonable distance, the ship types engaged are revealed (though not the factions). A little closer yet and you'd see who was involved in addition to the victorious fleet being revealed for a bit afterwards. It would be interesting if certain factions (i.e. Templars, Imperium, Luddites, and Hegemony) intentionally broadcast their victorious fleets in sectors that they more or less control. The more clandestine corporations and pirates, however, try to go dark as soon as possible.

I meant more along the lines of M&B style battles. Yeah the current implementation isn't objectively bad, just personally I don't like it since it leads to weird gameplay and misses a bunch of other neat opportunities that battles taking time and being joinable would add.

But it is simpler as it is, and even M&B had it's own weird conceptual issues so I can :dealwithit: if I must

Yeah M&B is what I think of when I picture how battles should work. Seriously it would be awesome to actually participate in battle with and against other fleets.
I can settle without it but it really would give more life to the other factions. You might get dragged into a fight you wanted to avoid, only to see that because you've been buddying up with the hegemony so much a patrol fleet nearby has offered to assist, turning the tide of battle when they join in.

Make it a pop up event, even though it would break immersion.

You or an allied fleet is being chased by an enemy, and based on burn speed know you/they are not going to get away. Throw out a call for help, and you/your allies can vector towards you, and if you/they are within a certain distance of the battle beginning, you/they get to join in the battle, with the time at which you/they join being based upon how far away you/they are when the battle initiates.

Join/have allies join half way through a fight, assess the situation and blammo, assign ships to protect/escort damaged vessels.

The more enemy you kill and the more allies you save during these fights have decent, though not spectacular effects on your standing.

Pretty loving cool mechanic I think.

It would be a great way to get a boost early on in a run, because you could assist in much larger fleet battles that would normally crush you, pick off some heavies, make some decent bank with an equitable share of loot/bounty, and get a decent rep at the same time.

Why run a huge expensive fleet when a small group of wolves or other heavy frigs can actually wolf really hard and tacticool it up.

Being able to take part in large fleet battles also increases the amount of variety in player ship roles. You may elect to play a ship that would be poor in single combat but which excels in a fleet action, without having to actually own a large fleet. You also would get to see the big ships more often.

Mac Con

It would be pretty badass flying in with just a frigate and changing the tide of battle in favor of an allied faction. One thing I think the game lacks right now is a sense of progression and purpose if you choose not to gather the largest fleet possible and stick to one or just a few ships. Basically wanna be Han Solo flying around in the Millennium Falcon getting into hijinks. It would be cool if you could play at different scales so there's stuff to do and ways to progress without a fleet of cap ships.
