Between now and then, there's also been Chibi Robo, Elite Beat Agents, Ghost Trick, and a bunch of other little things and one-offs, but Pikmin's been their last big IP before Splatoon.

Yea I'm really trying to think of another example but aside from small but still active stuff like you mentioned there's hardly been any huge advertising push for a non-mainstay IP for Nintendo. I know they've been talking the good poo poo about having huge plans for keeping the game updated and all but honestly I figured that was just bullshitting.

In the Iwata Ask they mentioned Pikmin was the last IP they created internally in the investigations and development department or something, so I guess those and Codename STEAM were mostly second party stuff? Either way this has to be the most promoted Nintendo IP this millennial or something. All I can think now is how bad I want that Splatoon Frozen Yogurt.

As far as "character IPs" go, this is pretty much the first one EAD has produced since Pikmin, yeah, but Nintendo as a company has released quite a few, either through the SPD division or collaborations with HAL, IntSys, etc or through external collaborations.

so I got Splatoon. I bought it. Full game and all, but I am wondering why I simply cannot play via single player right now. I missed out on the test chambers because I was pre-occupied but as it stands right now on my Wii U I have the full fledged game sitting in my hard drive. It would be nice if maybe I can walk around the tutorial and get a real "feel" of the game coming out in less than 48 hours. Kinda funny too, with the whole test chamber download I am able to at least get a title screen, but when I click on the actual game I get nothing, an d then an error message telling me the game is not out yet. I get that Splatoon is not out yet for the public, but I also know that Splatoon is not for its Single Player Experience. Though I will try it out of course, I simply want to get a feel of the game, that is why I think Single Player options for those who have bought the game can experience a limited space of testing while waiting for the launched in 48 hours. I don't even know how good I am going to be with this game. I have seen some hardlined poo poo and I am nervous as hell. I missed out on all the testing opportunities and I'd hate to be the one going into a MULTI-player game in a disadvantage. Still, in the end I bought the game -- at full price -- still waiting what is in store. I have never been more nervous of a video game launch.

I think people who managed to get a physical copy early can play, but preloading from the eShop doesn't allow it. I'm in the same boat. It's been sitting on my hard drive since the first testfire. I see the icon every time I turn on my Wii U, but the content is inaccessible. It is a torture.

at least you can preload it. Australia gets it on the loving 30th and you can't preload it so it'll unlock at midnight friday night and i'll have to spend... i don't know, a couple of minutes downloading it first too goddamnit nintendo au

Preloading is downloading most of the game ahead of time so that, when it's officially released, you download a tiny patch and can play immediately. It's more common with PC games admittedly but it's been a thing for a while.
