Man, they really nailed Geralt in this game. I can't believe it's the same voice from the first one. His comedic timing and sardonic tone are fantastic.

No, because you kill him in The Witcher 1. Hes a Source, just like Ciri. He can teleport between space/time etc. He teleports into the past and then becomes the Grand Master of the Order of the Flaming Rose. Then you murder him and his retarded Rose thats on fire for some reason. Mostly cause hes a dick when he grows up.

I know all that. I was wondering if he's mentioned as in, wtf the Wild Hunt were looking for him, and how he might, possibly, tie into Ciri, if at all.

If anyone can clarify this it'd be baller. I really want to just man up and push on with my Death March campaign but if the experience penalty is really that great then I'll probably just forfeit the trophy. I don't think slowing the level gain down is a very interesting way of increasing challenge.

Its not an experience penalty so much as CDPR trying to prevent people from vastly over-leveling story quests.

I noticed when i hit about lvl 16 that exp starts to dramatically drop off, UNTIL you start completeing primary missions. Those are worth a ton in and of themselves, but once you get a level over the main story stuff, it all slows to a crawl.

Then, when you catch the story stuff up, your leveling takes a massive swing in the other direction. Quests start netting 600-800 or so until you caught up, then about 300-400, and then once your past the main story level it drops to 200, then 100, then about 50 per quest. its a pretty lovely gating mechanic.

Monster exp also almost entirely stops accruing.

The voice acting in general is some of the best I've heard in a game. it works really well.

Almost want to try playing it in French to see if it's gotten better.

On the other hand... Can you come up with a reasonable alternative? The game certainly doesn't offer you one, which is obviously the point. If your objective is to find and save Ciri, basically your daughter, from the Wild Hunt and you are out of leads and you have nearby a sorceress who has a way to get you information in an albeit nasty fashion, are you going to reject it because you feel bad for a dead guy?

Yen takes the "save Ciri at any cost" motive to heart, and while she can be abrasive, annoying, and needlessly secretive at times I don't fault her for being willing to do almost anything to help me save someone dear to me (and her).

Pretty much. seems like side quests are designed for 2 things: side story, and to catch you up to main quests.

You can out level the main story stuff if you really push the side quests, but, if your level is just 1 over the primary story quest level, even doing quests that are like 15 levels over you net you next to no exp at all. If you do that same level difference side quest when under the primary story quest, you gain a TON of exp for completing the high level side quest.

Just finished clearing all the water-based question marks in Skellege (only two of which had anything worth picking up; the Spoils of War one on the western-most island, and the Hidden Treasure one on the southernmost island in the bay area you start out in), and ran across a nice touch:

One of the side quests you can do may result in someone getting sentenced to death by being chained to a rock in the sea and pecked to death by birds. They actually show up dead and chained to a large rock afterward, near the treasure mentioned above, and Geralt comments on it being a horrific death.

Yeah, it was because the keeper was taking bribes from pirates to turn off the lights so ships ran aground.

OK neat, thanks. Looks like I'll focus on the main quest to get my level up a bit and then start tackling side stuff then. It seems a level difference between you and the enemy makes a massive difference on Death March, but doesn't appear to be anywhere near as bad one level lower.

Speaking of this quest (Skellige side quest spoilers): Did anyone do Hjalmar's quest and run off, swords drawn, ready to cut the heads off suspects? I did Cerys (because it seemed way more logical and levelheaded) and at the end when she's crowned queen you see Hjalmar looking like he got the crap beat out of him. This part does not seem to be true. Despite out-leveling the main quest by 6 levels, I still get XP from one-shotting sirens/drowners (which are lower level than me) with the crossbow and got a nice chunk from killing a Venomous Arachnas (which was higher level).

Rather, monster XP accrual appears to depend on your level relative to theirs.

That's really interesting and means I'll probably at least keep a little bit up on the main quest instead of neurotically doing sidequests. At the least, I'll avoid trying to do the higher-level ones. Alternatively, just not do some and save them for a later playthrough. Either way, iit should be fun.

Do some of the main quest, this involves a fair bit of running around in Velen but if you want a break from Peasant Misery Simulator and exploration, I think you can do most of the main quests in Novigrad at like level 8-10ish. There's not a lot of combat in Novigrad missions, it's tons of (generally awesome) dialogue and witcher sleuthing.

Just did the crones and Irmalef(sp). I waited after the cutscene looked around and found an acorn on his body, then went down the mountain and gave to the villagers and told them they were on their own. I have no doubt this minor act is a story point for them that causes them from losing hope and dying to instead raising a great tree...one soaked in the blood of dead children and 2 old crones, which then starts dropping even fouler acorns across the world like some sort of lovecraftian demigod.
