Squid Girl is good but, I think after a while it started to have diminishing returns on its various jokes/set-ups. I think I'm like 10 chapters behind and I can't be bothered to catch up. It's still worth reading/watch anyway.

As far as I know the movies, both seasons of SAC, and Arise are not connected at all beyond sharing the characters and setting. I think both seasons of SAC is definitely the best choice, though. You could also read the manga  .

The movies, SAC and the new Arise (and manga) are totally different continuities so you can kind of start where you like. The first movie is good, the second one is bad but looks nice, SAC is mostly awesome, Arise is mostly dull. The manga is eh.

It's a boring movie that spends about half an hour repeating the same thing and the Major is barely in it and it seemed completely pointless sorry. It does look nice though. I honestly don't think I've liked anything Mamoru Oshii has done since, uh, Jin-Roh I guess?
