It's a gorgeous movie with a fantastic premise and a great finale...I like it a lot. I haven't seen too much Oshii, but is probably my second favorite of his (Patlabor 2 being #1). I don't think the major needed to be in it since her story felt very contained in 1, and her lasting influence permeates everything that happens in 2.

Also the first time I saw Innocence I thought the first one was better but after 2 or 3 additional viewings I've gone the opposite way

I watched GitS: SAC recently and all the members of Section 9 were very distinct and memorable except for Paz and Borma who were just kinda there.

maybe watching ARISE first is the best idea, since everything goes up from there. also Paz is an actual character in that universe. it made me like him more in retrospect.
