Someone please explain this pinwheel thing to me.

When ships bank, their bases rotate 45°. As squares, they're longer from corner to corner than they are edge to edge. If you have two ships side by side or front to back they need to be pretty far away from each other to not bump when banking in formation. If you offset each ship a little you can fly a tight formation.

So I finally picked this game up after waffling about it for awhile, and my only regret is I didn't start sooner. This game rules.

My question to you pros: I bought the starter set, and a buddy bought the TIE defender and Scyk fighter (I know, scum faction, I don't think he knew, and we only play casually so no biggy) And I was thinking about picking up TIE advanced and a Y wing.

Since our games are contained for now to our group, I wanted to purchase with balance in mind, 2 at a time or so, so we can keep the sides relatively even points wise until our ship stable grows. Thoughts? Better options or whatever, we don't compete yet, we just drink beer and play tiny spaceships.

Aight so, in the interests of broadening my horizons I put together a list so I can practice moving swarms around. Here's what it looks like:

Kavil
-R4 Agromech
-Blaster Turret
-Veteran Instincts

Palob
-Blaster Turret
-Moldy Crow

Binayre Pirate x3
-Feedback Array

100 points on the nose. I figure that if I'm supposed to be using the Zs as blockers and obstacles that I can at least have the option to wring some damage out of them even if they can't attack, hence Feedback Array which doesn't care if you're in base-to-base contact or facing the wrong direction or what. So aside from learning how to maneuver in formation, what are the tricks to using really, really low PS ships. Obviously they move before anyone else does so is it just a matter of having to get much, much better at predicting where my opponent is likely to go or something else?

At the casual level you actually don't actually have to worry too much about balancing points with what you have because you can always just load a given ship down with an expensive pilot and a million upgrades. So yes get the TIE Advanced because Darth Vader rules and the Raider expansion will come out soon and make the ship even more awesome. Yes get a Y-wing because Y-wings loving RULE ahemexcuseme and they are excellent ion turret platforms. If you want you could ask about what ships you're interested in next and we can describe how they fly in this game. The only thing about points is that large ships will be somewhere near double the points cost of smaller ships so you can figure that into your purchasing.

As always do all your planning in your friendly neighborhood squadron builder or with a full card list.

So, to lay it out, I have built one list for ech faction at th 110 point range. What I have is all rebel ships minus transport/corvette plus 1 extra z-95, 2 core sets, slave 1, most wanted, 1 starviper, 1 syck.

So, I am gonna post all three, and you can tell me which is the least terrible (Spoiler, they are all terrible)
REBEL
Jake Farrell, Test Pilot, VI, Outmanuver, Autothrusters, Proton Rockets
Ten Number, Mangler, VI, B/e2, Lando
Wedge, Expert Handling, R2 unit, Engine upgrade
109 points.

EMPIRE

Krassis Trelix, HLC, Recon Specialist
Mauler Mithal, VI
Dark Curse
Night Beast
Black Sq pilot with VI

SCUM
Kath Scarlet, Interial Dampners, VI, k4 Security Droid, Engine upgrade
Kavil, Autoblaster Turret, Unhinged Astromech VI
N'dru Suhlak, Cluster Missiles, Lone Wolf,
Binayre Pilot.

(Yes, tehy all suck)

BattleMaster
Aug 14, 2000

I normally run at 100 points for Scum:

Firespray Kath with Push the Limit, Engine Upgrade, K4 security Droid
2x Y-Wing Hired Gun with Ion Cannon Turret, BTL-A4, Unhinged Astromech.

If I was going to run 110 points, I'd downgrade the Hired Guns to Syndicate Thugs, give them R4 Agromechs, and add a Z-95 Binayre Pirate for blocking and a few more dice.

Edit: Personally for Rebs I would run something like this, assuming you have the Rebel Aces set:

https://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f...1:;64:-1:-1:-1:

Edit 2: Oops, Tactician only comes with the TIE Phantom, I have 3 in preparation for shenanigans with the YV-666 though

My brother randomly picked up the core set on a lark and it's probably the most fun wargame I've played. Ended up getting Scum and Villainy Most Wanted and the Imperial Aces pack and did 90 points Scum vs. Imperials. The non-dodgeable 1 ranged blaster turret seems way powerful. :argh:

How does it compare to Star Wars Armada and whatever the ground one is called, out of curiosity?

Y-Wings are pretty much the core of the Scum faction (unless you're running 2x IG-2000 which has no room for them) and the autoblaster turret is good but not necessarily the best thing to do with them. You need to buy the Rebel Y-wing set or the Rebel Hawk set to get Ion Cannon Turrets, but running Y-Wing/BTL-A4/Ion Cannon Turret/(Unhinged Astromech or R4 Agromech) is possibly even better.

Edit: Kavil with the Autoblaster Turret is excellent, though, even if you can't do the double-tap with him

In my opinion, with the exception of a few cases, the scum Y-Wings benefit immensely from the unhinged Astromech. The mobility it gives them is really essential when using the BTL title to keep a target in its front arc. It was a life saver the last tournament I was in when I had to use a K-turn a couple of times, and could use a green maneuver that turned.

Unhinged is probably the best astromech in the game, but lately I've been digging the free target locks you can get from Agromechs, K4 Security Droids, and Fire Control System. Target locks are statistically very good if you have a focus token, and those things all help you get them and a focus at the same time.

Edit: Kath with Push the Limit, Engine Upgrade, and K4 Security Droid is my favourite thing precisely because of the action economy that setup has

Kavil is the cornerstone of a lot of my Scum lists, he's just that useful. I find the Autoblaster to be kind of iffy in practice (against other players using them I've been able to play keepaway for most of the entire game) so I use the Blaster Turret off the HWK 290 pack plus R4 Agromech to fire off 4-dice attacks with a free target lock, it seems to work out okay.

As for TIEs, the named Phantom pilots are great, TIE Advanced is due a series of upgrades and new pilots with the Raider capital ship that I'm guessing will give them a shot in the arm...they're not quite as maneuverable as a basic TIE, though Darth Vader is a decent pilot...Bombers are virtually never flown that I've seen, and Defenders are generally thought to be overcosted for what they do, but a lot of people are theorizing there may be a card coming up in Wave 7 to make them perform better.

Just watch it...
Won the NE/Boston Regional last night. Final game wrapped up at 2AM and was intense.

My List
IG88B: VI, FCS, Autothrusters, IG2000, Dampeners, Mangler, Seismic Charges
IG88C: VI, FCS, Autothrusters, IG2000, Dampeners, HLC, Flechette Cannon

vs. Super Fel plus a standard kit RAC (Pred, Gunner, Ysanne, RC, and EU).

The game really was decided on a single sequence of crazy dice rolls.

1) Fel fires range 1 on my C who has 3 hull left. No tokens for me to use. He rolls 3 hits + crit unmodified and I figure he's dead. I roll three evades. Crit was Damaged Engine.
2) Then my B fires at Fel range 2 through an asteroid with Mangler. Fel has 2 focus + evade + his 5 evade die. Attack roll is 1 hit + 2 crits. He rolls all blanks. First crit is a Minor Explosion and he rolls the hit on that. Fel goes boom.

After that it was just 5 more quick rounds to mop up his RAC. C ended up going down in a blaze of glory getting blown up by the RAC but firing back and dealing 3 damage and a Damaged Cockpit crit. 2 rounds later B finished it off.

They're gonna post the Twitch streams on Youtube so I'll link them here once they do. Overall a really fun time and immense amount of sportsmanship displayed by everyone I met. You really couldn't ask for a better experience.

One of the matches in my regional had my Y-Wing destroying Soontir after he had been tagged by Ten Numb and he had barrel-rolled into range one of my Y-Wing (to be fair, he thought I had placed BTL on it). One turn of firing and an auto/stealth device/ptl Soontir was gone :)

I'm leaning towards the second list, because it kills things loving dead (Krassis with HLC + 3x Interceptors :flashfap:), but it's major weakness is the atrocious pilot skill levels.

The first one has better pilot skills, but I'm not satisfied with Howlrunner's upgrades. Maybe I should put some survivability kit, such as stealth device, on her instead.

39? You putting AdSensors on him as well? I usually keep him at 36 points because that's a lot of points already on something that isn't much more survivable than a standard 22 point B-Wing.
