Some American comedian did write a fairly personal piece about how difficult it was to develop new material because anywhere you might try it out there's always the chance someone will film a crass or offensive joke and then you get the tumblr brigade after you and how it's difficult to be funny when I'm risking upsetting someone. I mean, I get where he's coming from, but then I look at Frankie "Maddie is an anagram of I'm Dead" Boyle and realise they're all just being whiny shits.

Comedians that bitch about this sort of thing don't actually have anything new to say. They want to take a short-cut to humor, relying on age-old stereotypes and offensive language instead of making the material itself funny. That's why George Carlin was the best of the best -- the man said pretty much whatever he pleased and rarely worried about being "PC," but everything he said was said in a way that was both thought-provoking and full of wit.

Seinfeld probably wanted to write jokes about Jews not understanding blacks and gays, because hey, who are these people?!!?!

Just in case it wasn't clear I love Frankie Boyle and the point I was making is that whenever he gets accused of vulgarity or offensiveness and someone tries shutting him down he just doubles down with the most vile rape and disability related jokes he can come up with and it's awesome, especially because a) he's really loving funny and b) he writes really good insightful analysis of British politics and racism and stuff in general, and he'll put his money where his mouth is- when the Daily Mail (the paper that supported Hitler and loves to whip up "think of the children" frenzies while proudly circulating creepy as poo poo "all grown up" photos of pubescent teen actresses) had a right proper go at him he sued them for defamation, won, and donated the money to an anti-racist (or something similar) charity. He's also gone on hunger strike to protest the continued imprisonment of British Muslims in Guantanamo and his latest show had Akala come on and give a really eloquent breakdown of just how loving racist Britain has become.

Frankie Boyle is fantastic and needs to get an HBO show or something to swear some sense into the Yanks.

I'm always amused by comedians who simultaneously maintain that 1) there's no finer thing than people speaking truth to power and there are no scared cows and nothing is exempt from criticism and ridicule 2) except for comedians who should never be criticized or have their tender feelings hurt because that's censorship and fascism and political correctness.

A skilled comedian can offset any offensiveness in his material with humor, so what he's really saying is, "My jokes aren't funny enough to make up for how offensive they might be."

The solution to his problem is probably less "be more selective in choice of performing venue" and more "be funnier."

Yeah. I don't know any truly edgy comedian who complains at all about political correctness. Only tired old hacks. Even Jimmy Carr, who does rape jokes in a way that I think is pretty lovely, just takes his lumps if someone doesn't like them and won't wine about it--and most of those jokes are aimed at men and not women. Like "I bought a rape alarm, because I kept forgetting when it was time to rape people." And he's an absolute liberal, just like Boyle. I don't know any actually funny edgy comedian who isn't a huge liberal in their politics and who isn't taking aim at the power structure with their comedy, even if they hit others too.

I know this thread is mostly reserved for American media and stuff but just to keep away the confusion- Frankie is not a Liberal, Liberalism in the UK is a centrist ideology that tends to the right economically (although the Lib Dems aren't that bad when it comes to social rights) and "liberals" are your unprincipled hacks who are more likely to complain about Boyle and talk seriously about how we "need immigration control" and that "sure it's sad people are using foodbanks but THE DEFICIT" than actually share his opinions. Boyle is almost certainly a socialist of sorts.

How could the Lib Dems ever recover from that coalition thing and that leader they had who was such a soppy wet nothing?

But yeah, when I say 'liberal', I mean that both Carr and Boyle are extremely 'far-left' in terms of stuff like immigration, taxation, government services, education. etc.

To keep this on American Right-Wing Media, here's an American Stinker article on Boyle whining about his extremely on-target jokes, like these:

quote:

White Americans have a stereotype of black people being criminals purely because they can’t acknowledge that it was actually white people that stole them from Africa in the first place.... you think it’s OK to say that you killed one of them because he was trying to escape.”

“Britain is in a similar place with colonialism.... We profited from a vile crime and feel no shame. We fear the arrival of immigrants that we have drawn here with the wealth we stole from them."

The problem is that people are idiots and don't understand the line. That's why Dave Chappelle quit, that's why Chris Rock had to stop doing certain jokes, because white people thought that made it ok for them to say those things too. You see it with Obama too. It starts off with "I disagree with his policies", then people start joining in talking about his personal life or how he's arrogant, and then comes the racism.

That's why Boyle's stuff works- no one's going to take his unbelievably exaggerated and extreme jokes about disabilities or rape and use them as an excuse for being ableist or rape-apologists. And when Boyle does joke about racism, for example, it's in a way that is incredibly clear and unable to misinterpret, and he never makes minorities the target unless it's so evidently clear it's an absurdity (like the rape and disability jokes). No one's going to hear a Boyle joke on racism and be able to use it as a justification for their own racism (with the slight exception of anti-Scottish bigotry, but then again joking about the short lifespans up here is more of a jab at Thatcherism).

See I think that some of Frankie Boyles stuff after he left MTW was a bit, well not dull but that it was basically the equivalent of shouting "oval office" at an audience for about 90 minutes. It had a lot of impact and visceral noise and all the rest of it, it just wasn't anything I'd like to watch because it was kind of unfunny due to how he was basically just berating the audience who'd come along.

Some of it is hilarious, the whole "Trying to remember his own wedding" bit from mock the week is hysterical, but he just seemed really angry at the people coming to see him, which seemed a little weird.

Oh and, what is it about George Carlin? I've watched so much of his stuff and some of it is insightful, but I've never gotten any belly laughs out of it. What is it that people find the most appealing?
