They can't pull big names because the panels aren't interviews and the subject matter is not given in far enough advance for anybody worthwhile to be booked for it. You don't get to promote your project or pet cause, and you're splitting your time with others. A publicist would probably look at that deal and say no thanks. So instead we get random people who may or may not have any understanding of a given issue trying to make jokes but being kneecapped by the structure of the show.

What's an example of Trevor Noah being funny outside his few bits on TDS? I saw African American on Netflix, and maybe I wasn't in a good mood or something but it struck me as being pretty

I don't know how hard it is to find his other stand up, but the Daywalker documentary was on Netflix a while ago. Youtube has a bunch of clips from his other shows up too and I think the South African Roast he hosted. I don't really find him hilarious, maybe a little funnier than Stewart's stand up. His material does have a theme to it that looks like it would make for good Daily Show style hosting though.

It's not as though Jon Stewart was exactly some kind of god of comedy before he took over for The Daily Show. He wasn't even that good for the first year or two.

Josh Lyman posted:We love Jon Stewart for his political commentary, not his comedy. He didn't do that for the first year or so either. Indecision 2000 really made the show what it is today.

Josh Lyman posted:I don't. I'm not necessarily aligning myself with the current "Trevor Noah isn't funny" argument, but I don't think he has the political commentary chops either. Neither did Jon "MTV correspondent" Stewart. Noah's standup didn't do anything for me either, but viewing it in the context of him being the next host, he does plenty of impressions pretty good, and that's one thing Stewbeef does well too. If he can pull off the comedic timing and delivery I don't think we have much to worry about there. I have no way to know how much Jon does in the writer's room though. I will also admit that I have to wonder how well a South African can step into hosting arguably (LWT is obviously a contender now) the most important political satire show in the US.

I think it's kind of weird they're cordoning him off backstage and not really doing anything with him on the show. IIRC the only time he has appeared since the announcement was for a small gag in a Hasan Minhaj segment. I realize he's probably busy as gently caress, but I still hardly know what to expect from him so it'd be cool if they built him up a little.

How can the Daily Show catch all the Sound of Music references about the G7 but not mention that the Sound of Music takes place in Austria, not Bavaria... which is Germany.

Well it's not exactly the center of a joke... but if you're going to go to the effort of just showing how mindless the media is about things, it's probably worth a toss-off remark to punctuate it. You know... like the Daily Show does pretty much every day.

So nightly show had a kinda edgy sketch last night featuring Dahmer, Idi Amin and Hitler. I could like it if they did more of that stuff.

And then they talked about escaped convicts' dicks for the entire panel. I know a lot of you gave up on the show a long time ago, so I'll just clarify that I wasn't joking there.

The "not a saint" bit was great. Did Nightly get the "Viagra for Women" bit right? Or was it Nightly's occasionally weird politics leaning towards the "it's not about feminism; it's about marketing" angle? Because I haven't stumbled upon a think piece adopting that position.

I get pissed off just seeing Rumsfeld's loving flesh puppet face as much as I do hearing the bullshit that constantly spews forth from it.

This latest load of horseshit from Rummy is infuriating. He'll probably never be prosecuted for leading the US into this clusterfuck, but it would be great if people remembered how incompetent he is and why neoconservatives should never be allowed near power again. At least Alcibiades cocked up with a modicum of style.

Rumsfeld is a master at doing whatever he originally felt like doing and avoiding any and all responsibility. He's the human version of that cat knocking a glass off the table.

I honestly really loved him saying 'yea we 'trap' guys like this but so the gently caress what that's not how this works', that felt like a very real expression that I hope sticks with people to fight for actual change not just 'ah HA I got you, checkmate!' poo poo.

It felt to me like a "well we exposed this scumbag, now what? He's gonna keep being a scumbag and nobody will care" which is a feeling I can definitely identify with. That kind of thing might have mattered before journalism died, but now that anything resembling "news" is bought and paid for, guys like him have a cadre of 24-hour news channels sycophants who will fall all over themselves to excuse any vile poo poo he's done. Everything is poo poo.

That is probably one of the most pessimistic pieces Jon has done. No wonder Jon's quitting. Eventually the political hateboner stops and you don't get any more satisfaction from laughing at people like Rummy.

The NAACP story is to The Nightly Show what "Donald Trump running for president" is to Jon Stewart. If you had to ask, no... none of the panelists made the comparison with Caitlyn Jenner or transgendered people. Good. They didn't drop the ball when they were handed a goldmine.
