When you fall, get right back up again.
Well that was a lot of fun… mostly. And I guess I should be grateful someone reliable watched you all for once. Now, where were we in the story? The Isolation District? Right.

…It really stinks.
Seriously… It’s like something rotted over and over again…
Man, I can barely stand it…
PLASMA Troop: Well met!
You too… How’s the investigation going?
PLASMA Troop: Not much progress yet. There are too many Sharl…
We’ve run into some pretty strange enemies, and the Genomis are getting exhausted.
Strange? How…?
PLASMA Troop: Well, they look human, but they’re…not really human. And they’re really creepy.
Found any clues about Prim or this Seer?
PLASMA Troop A: Unfortunately not.
Hm… That’s not good.
PLASMA Troop A: Agreed, but we did find a path that leads further in. That’s where we’re going now.
Got it.

The source of the smell became clear when they took that path.

I-Is that a pile of corpses?!
Are they the ones who attacked us earlier?
I think so… But they aren’t moving. Are they dead…?
What’s going on…?
…We need to hurry. Something’s wrong here, and that 8th Dimensional is at the heart of it.
…It’s probably just ahead.

There seemed to be no sign of the 8th Dimensional, though.

Video- “EXSPHERE NOSURGE”

Watch

This room sure is big…
PLASMA Troop A: Good to see you. This appears to be the final room. “Room” almost seems insufficient, though…
Are Prim and Nelo around here?
PLASMA Troop A: We couldn’t find them.
drat… Where did you go, Prim?
We don’t have a choice; we need to go back. We can’t just leave Felion unprotected for this long.
Get the rest of the troops ready to head back.
PLASMA Troop A: I don’t like it either, but…you’re right.
Prepare to return to base!

Unfortunately, this was in fact a trap and a strange song began to ring out from above.

Song- Class::EXSPHERE_NOSURGE;

Listen

PLASMA Troop C: Rrrrgh… My head feels like it’s about to explode!
PLASMA Troop B: S-Stop it… Aaaaaaaah!
What’s going on?!
It’s so loud! I can barely hear!
My ears…my whole head hurts!
…Prim?
Is this Prim?!
What’s wrong?!
Prim is above us!
What?!
There’s a lot of noise in there too, but there’s no mistaking it. I can hear her!
I-I don’t hear it!
Just follow me!
O-Okay!

Prim was indeed singing the song.

Stop it!
Ha ha ha, looks like you found me.
Although I guess I shouldn’t be surprised, daddy.
What are you doing here? Where did Nelo go?!
I’m right here.
What are you planning?!
I’m looking for a way to return to my own world. I’ve told you that a bunch of times.
I did manage to get some good results this time, thanks to you.
Is Ion working with you?
He he he. Maybe.
Ionasal and I both hate this world.
We were called here out of nowhere, and then sealed off without being told anything.
We asked, cried, and begged, but nobody helped us, or let us go home.
So…
We’re going to find a way back home using our own power.
If you want to leave, then leave, but Prim has nothing to do with this!
We’ll be taking her back now!
How?
If you won’t hand her over, then by force!

That was about when Nelo hinted at what the song had been for.

What?!
Delta!
A-Are they…?!
No…

And another 8th Dimensional approached…

What did you say?
Are they…Genomis?

No…this isn’t possible…
It was probably your friends who freed us, too.
Zill created them. They already knew how to open the locks. It made them very helpful.
How could you do this…?
I really am sorry…
But we had to, in order to return.
How can you be so calm about this?!
Machines run on fuel, right?
This is the same thing. 8th Dimensionals are what I need to power my trip back to my own world.
Don’t worry. I won’t do anything to you. I want you and Cass to be happy too.
I don’t understand, but I’ve still heard enough.
I’m going to stop whatever it is you’re doing here.
And I’m taking Prim back!
Oh, are you really going to leave your friends behind to escort us?
Are you sure that’s okay?

Delta didn’t quite get what she actually meant.

Anyone in PLASMA is ready to give their life or their fellow humans. They all knew that…
And that’s why I’m not backing down.
Prim! That goes for you too!
Daddy…? Did you turn into a demon again? You look scary…
Daddy always turns into a demon when he gets mad… A demon that destroys everything around it…
Prim doesn’t understand…
Of course I’d get mad!
Who wouldn’t get mad when the things that matter to them are taken away?! You can’t understand THAT!?
Aaaah!
Cass?!
Cass, are you alright!?
D-Delta…!
poo poo… I’m sorry, everyone!

They had no choice but to fight the new 8th Dimensional.

Video- “8th Reprise”

Watch

Boss Battle: 8th Dimensional
I have no idea why, but this fight is MUCH easier than the first round. This 8th Dimensional has less health, hits harder, and only gets one action when Broken. Maybe they accidentally swapped the boss fights at some level of development, it’s really weird. If you got past the first one you’ll sleep through this fight.

It wasn’t terribly threatening, but did give Nelo and Prim a chance to run away.

I-I’m sorry. It’s because I couldn’t stop them.
This isn’t your fault, Cass.
We need to know about the other Genomis. Were they all wiped out?
We should go check.
Yeah, but be careful.
PLASMA Troop: Guh…
Are you okay!?
Can you talk? Where is everyone else?!
PLASMA Troop: After the sound, they were engulfed in a light…and swallowed up.
Then they…they…a-aaaa…
H-Hey! Pull yourself together!

…drat it.
This…this is all because of us…
Cass!
There’s no point in thinking about that right now. We’ve got a bigger problem: Prim escaped.

Delta was remarkably good at staying on-mission in spite of the circumstances.

But we don’t know where she went…
She can’t have gotten far!
Delta…I’m worried about Prim too, but right now we need to go back to Felion.
What?! We haven’t stopped the 8th Dimensionals, and we haven’t saved Prim! We can’t go back!
We’ve lost too many Genomis! We can’t leave Felion undefended!
We won’t forget about Prim, but we can’t do anything about her right now…
But…
I’ve got it. We should talk to Sarly.
Maybe she can think of a way to save Prim…and the Genomis we lost.
Don’t you think that’s a better idea than running around this place by ourselves?

He ended up going along with Cass’ plan.

When they dropped in on Sarly, she was not alone.

You’ve returned.
Prime Minister? Why are you here?
I had something of a technical question for her…and for him.
Doctor Leolm: I haven’t been of much use, I’m afraid.
Well, how did it go? Did you solve our problem?

…None of the Genomis, aside from us, will be returning.
What?!
Could you run that by me again…?
I can explain.
The Seer… To be honest, I don’t really understand.
Doctor Leolm: Me either. What about you, Prime Minister?
The Seer is a single being formed from the fusion of many humans.
Turning multiple humans into one? Why would Nelo…
I don’t know, but if she is attempting to create a womb for the planet, as Zill was saying…
A womb…

The Prime Minster continued to be incredibly well-informed.

What…?
I don’t understand. What is combining a bunch of humans going to accomplish?
Doctor Leolm: Nelo wishes to return to her world. To do so, however, she requires an enormous amount of energy.
Far more than the life force of a single human could ever provide.
Fusing lifeforms is the most convenient way to generate the amount of energy she requires.
You seem to know a great deal, but how can we trust it to be the truth if we don’t even know who you are?
Doctor Leolm: Ignore me if you like. I’m only speaking for the benefit of Ms. Planck and her friends.
Please believe him, Prime Minister. He’s helped me out many times in the past.
Hmph. Very well. It isn’t as though we have a choice, even if he is simply baiting a trap.
We need the truth of this situation if we are to reverse it. Sarly, may I borrow one of these terminals?
I don’t mind, but…do you really know how to use this stuff?
Don’t worry about me.
Well… Okay then.
Delta, we should probably get back to Felion.
If these two don’t know where to find the 8th Dimensionals or Prim, we’re out of options.
…Right. Sorry for dragging you out here.
All right, we’re going to go speak with Nay. I’m worried about what’s happening to Felion.
Good idea. I’ll submit the report for your mission.
Thanks, Sarly.

Things got a bit peculiar again right about there.

Feinne’s Notes:
The other option just has him go ‘What?’ and Cass ask what your deal is.

What was that technical question you had?
Oh, you mean the reason I came here?
Delta! We don’t have time for this!
I understand you’re curious, but we can’t really talk about it yet.
We aren’t trying to hide anything, so we’ll tell you once everything’s in order.

Delta, you could at least say “Okay” or something.
…Huh?
…What’s wrong with you?
Uh, nothing? Why are you getting so upset?
Why… Ugh, whatever. I’ll just pretend that didn’t happen. Now, let’s go.
It sounds like the Genomis were consumed… This isn’t good.
Yes.
I was afraid this would happen. This is all my fault.
I’m sorry, Sarly. I must ask for your cooperation.
Without it, I fear I cannot weave the song we need to stop them…EXPAJA.
…Yeah.

By the time Delta and Cass got back to Felion, it was nearly deserted.

…Yeah.
Oh no…do you think they all…?!
Be careful, Cass.

They returned to the Bistro, where Nay and was watching over the handful of people who’d managed to escape.

Welcome! Oh, Delta! Could you give me a moment?
…What’s going on?
Thanks for waiting, here’s your Sole Ramen!
Man: Th-This is good…well, maybe not really good, but certainly edible!
Older Man: I never thought we’d actually be able to eat Nay’s cooking!
Hey! That’s really rude!
Man: I-I’m sorry!
Whatever. It’s on the house, so eat up!
Man: W-Wow, you’re so generous…
Cass! Delta! Sorry, but could you help me out? I can’t handle all these people by myself.
What’s going on here?
What do you mean? Isn’t it obvious?
Man: …Everyone else was taken away.
Woman: We were lucky. Nay beat up the Sharl that attacked us, and let us take shelter here.
Man: My wife and daughter are gone, but I’m still here…
Woman: Try not to dwell on it too much…

It seemed they had pretty much been doomed from the start.

Without the Barrier we couldn’t fight them off, and this is the result.
Wha…what happened to the rest of the people in Felion?
Most of them were taken away. I think there are still a few hiding out, like we are…
Oh no…
How did it go for you? I heard a brief report already.
…We shouldn’t talk about it here.
I see… Well, I’ll be back at headquarters when things calm down. You should rest.
Nay, are you all right? You look a little tired…
I’m fine. I just haven’t slept much lately.
I’m Nay the Gale. I have to be there for these people. For all of them…
Just don’t push yourself too hard.

…Sorry, I said I’d look after this place while you were gone.
This isn’t your fault, Nay.
I couldn’t do anything. I was useless.
It takes everything I’ve got just to keep these few people safe.
I’m worthless.

Just go already. I’ll see you later.
Okay…

The remnants of PLASMA met to discuss the situation.

I am most sorry. They were all I could find.

All the Genomis…
Not only the Genomis. All of Felion will fall. Correct?
…Before long, yes.
I do not know for what purpose this “Seer” as Nelo called it was created, but…
With humans being taken at this rate, those of us left have little time remaining to us.
If the Sharl find us, I have no doubt we’ll be taken as well.
I see…
Most of PLASMA can’t even function like this… What could we do?

I shall now speak of the course of action for PLASMA and the remaining Genomis.
Yes.
…I shall permit Genomis to decide their own actions from this point forward.
There is no obligation to report to PLASMA.

Guard: So…we decide?
Weaver: Does…that means we don’t have to fight?

And as Nay had mentioned when she spoke to Ion, PLASMA was dissolved.

Guard: …No way.
…Hey.
Does that mean Cass and I can do what we want too?
Yes.
Huh. Then I’m going to go save Prim.
Delta…?
If I stop the Sharl, then the humans who are still alive will be okay, right?
In theory, yes, but that hardly seems a realistic goal at this point.
I agree, but if there’s even a slim chance, I can’t NOT try. Prim could stop the Sharl, after all.
Besides, I can’t watch her get tossed around by all this craziness any longer.
She wouldn’t do this by herself. Nelo or Zill must have done something ot her.
I want to help her before she does something that can’t be un-done.
And the rest?
…Yeah.
I feel the same. I’m going with Delta to save Prim.
I see…
Guard: …I’ll stick to my mission: Find survivors and keep them safe.
Weaver: Me too. Even without the other Genomis, my Song Magic can still help people.

Though this did not significantly change Delta’s plans.

Very well…
From today forward, PLASMA Specialist Combat Team Genomis is hereby dissolved.
Thank you for serving with distinction.

He and Cass headed into Felion to consider their next move.

That’s because all the people are…gone.
Is this our fault…?
This happened because we went to the Isolation District, didn’t it…
No.
The Barrier was broken. Even if we’d been here, we couldn’t have fought off a whole army of Sharl.
…It was all just a matter of time.
You might be right.

Is this the end for humanity?
Don’t be an idiot!
We’re still alive, that means we’ve still got a chance.
If we can recapture Prim, Nay can use her song to wipe out the Sharl again.
We could save everyone.

Didn’t you see the people at Nay’s restaurant? They don’t have any way to defend themselves from the Sharl.
But you’ve got Song Magic, Cass. That’s a special power—the power of thought.
There aren’t many people left who can use Song Magic.
What’s going to happen if someone like you, who CAN fight the Sharl, decides to throw in the towel?

Cass wasn’t particularly buying that she was special, though.

That’s why we’re going to save Prim. Don’t worry, everything’s going to be fine.
Whatever it takes, I’ve got your back, and I’m not gonna stop until we win.
So don’t give up hope.
What’s gotten into you? That was cheesy even for you.
W-Well if you’re gonna make fun of me then fine! I’ll just shutup!
Sorry, sorry, I was just kidding.
Well it wasn’t very funny…
Ha ha ha ha… Thanks anyway. I do feel a little better now.

And then things got strange again.

Feinne’s Notes:
The other answer itself is the funniest part of choosing it, Cass gets mad for spoiling the mood by saying something so strange.

I really like you.
Aaah! Wh-Where did that come from?!

Delta!?
Huh!?
Are you alright?!
Y-Yeah, I’m fine. Just got kinda dizzy there for a second.
A lot’s been happening lately…
W-Well don’t make me worry like that. You had me really scared…
Sorry.
…Here, hold on. Let’s get moving.
…Yeah.

That’s a good place to stop I think. Things are about to get exciting, and that can wait for next time.

Well that was suitably apocalyptic.

It's pretty clear how broken Nelo is. She's doesn't care about harming people because nobody helped her when she was the one that needed it, yet Cass and Delta are still her precious friends and she doesn't want to hurt them. Problem is that almost everyone alive on the Soleil were not the ones who hurt Nelo nor were they bystanders but she doesn't care about that. People failed to help her in the past so she doesn't care about hurting them.

Prim's a bit weird. She's probably still thinking about Nelo's tragic story. At least the Sharl are only capturing humans and thinking they're doing them a favor, Prim's helping Nelo fuse humans together into monsters to throw at her 'parents' and that's pretty twisted. I guess part of it is that she's just a kid and a genom, and doesn't understand it much other than helping Nelo, who is the real victim! Maybe Delta acting a bit weird has something to do with this?

If you look at the monster gallery the game provides you, the second fight with the 8th dimensional has substantially higher stats than the first fight, which means its quite likely Gust and/or the localizers screwed up somewhere and switched the stats of both bosses. It would certainly explain how ungodly difficult it is during the first fight on Veteran.

So I'm assuming from context that all the plasma soldiers and their song-magic-caster-people were eaten/turned into people-balls in the time between Delta somehow finding the way up to Prim which the PLASMA soldiers missed and Nelo pointing out the people-balls? It didn't seem entirely clear to me.

Yes, so it'll be more clear when we confront them all again next update but Class::EXSPHERE_NOSURGE; combines people into horrible 8th Dimensional things. Delta and Cass were likely saved by rushing up to confront Prim, which took them out of the target area of the song. In principle Class::EXPAJA; can undo the effects of EXSPHERE_NOSURGE; but we'll have to wait and see how effective it actually is. But not, like, long because we'll be doing that next update when Delta and Ion's stories merge again.

I also really like now Nelo, just in case, suggested that Ion's working with her just to make it less likely Delta and Cass would try to work with her in order to stop her. It's especially funny what Nelo said after we see some more of Ion's Dives because she's hilariously opposite world wrong about one thing (actually lots of things but that's being desperate and making terrible plans for you).

That's actually a thing to keep in mind, the plans antagonists are making here are not necessarily even supposed to sound like they're at all rational.

Good game!
EXSPHERE_NOSURGE is hands down the best song in the game even though it might not sound like it at first. It's also the only one by Noriko Mitose who did the singing for Shurelia, Mir and XaaCi in Quoga.

I want to make Voltaire's "Death death (devil devil evil evil songs)" my battle hymn.

It's interesting because they're both antagonists making some really bad decisions based on their fatal flaw. Nelo is so desperate to get home that she's not even willing to stop for a moment and consider the fullness of this plan she's a part of (when it gets expounded on next time you should notice a VERY OBVIOUS problem), while Infel was so absolutely arrogant that she considered any hope for the world impossible entirely because she had failed at Metafalica and to her that meant it couldn't be done.

For a series about the power of individuals with strong feelings, and villains who should be aware of that, they do have a very literal take on "human resources".

So uh - when the time comes for Nelo to click her blood red slippers made from the souls of a thousand orphans, does she even know where to look for her home? Or when? Oversight might give her the means, but it's a big multiverse out there.

I'm having a tough time trying to determine how to rank the songs in this game. There are two that are clearly a cut above the rest (both of them are later on) and then roughly half a dozen or so that are all really really good and not really worse than the others. EXSPHERE_NOSURGE is one of them, of course.

Yeah my favorite two are one that happens much later and one that we've not been technically introduced to yet nor heard most of, and past that there are a lot of really solid ones that are hard to rank. The number of different singers in this one does lend to having some pretty different songs, though nothing like Qoga's (no matter what you think about the actual game, if you can't respect a hymmnos polka about fighting cats then you have no soul).

Qoga actually has a LOT of contenders for my top ten tracks (off the top of my head EXEC_Z, chmod b700/n, EXEC_COSMOFLIPS, EXEC_METEMPSYCHOSIS, EXEC_FLIP_ARPHAGE, EXEC_EP=NOVA, and EXEC_ViiBaCi_MjiiRa are all solid candidates though in practice the first three are the most definite for me).

Things are about to get pretty exciting kids, because the two groups are about to run into each other again. Delta and Cass headed to the Flask Sea, on Delta’s intuition.

Huh? Right… We were looking for Prim…
Seriously, are you okay? You’ve been acting really strangely lately.
I told you, I’m fine. Let’s just see if we can find anything connected to Prim, okay?
Ugh… This place is creepy. I don’t want to be here…

Feinne’s Notes:
The game of course never tells you to go to the Placenta to look for Prim on Delta’s side, in principle this is where you’d be forced to switch to Ion side and eventually Nelo would tell her where they’re going.

Ion and Earthes, though, had beaten them there and were already confronting Zill.

Video- “The Maternal Overseer”

Watch

You find yourself in the presence of the God that will bring about a new era.
It looks like the “Maternal Overseer” hasn’t been born yet.
Correct, Ionasal. You shall now witness the birth of a God to surpass all gods, the “Maternal Overseer”.
The era of conflict, envy, and hatred ends today. I shall now become the God that will guide the souls of humanity.
Please release everyone from the flasks.
I cannot do that. The sinful souls within those flasks are all to become part of my own body.
With the power of their souls, I shall be reborn as a being who watches over this world from the 8th Dimension.
Zill…what are you trying to do?
I will create a society where all souls are commanded by one with absolute power.
I will cause a paradigm shift, transforming barbaric human society into a truly peaceful civilization.
That’s impossible! Even if you create a peaceful world, you can’t control everyone!
Is that so?

Zill, for her part, had turned the corner and was now in the midst of a good and proper lunatic rant.

Humans fought over race and territory, obsessed with pointless violence. Eventually, it consumed their planet.
The Creator’s duty was to guide and control our immature souls, but instead it abandoned us.
As a being of the 8th Dimension, above even the 7th Dimension God Exapico, I will control this world.
That is my goal.
Creating Sharl under Cosal, changing the power core to absorb life energy, placing humans in these flasks…
And researching the song to create the Maternal Overseer in the Isolation District. All steps toward this end.
…You were just using them. You manipulated Kanon and Cosal into doing what you wanted!
They will be compensated when I become the Maternal Overseer. The peace and order they desire will reign.
That’s not what they want! That’s not what anybody wants!
They may feel that way now, but their goals are essentially the same as my own.
In time they will no doubt appreciate my decision, and my influence from the 8th Dimension.

Nelo tried to bring up an additional selling point of the plan. Or maybe she was just trying to reassure herself that she wasn’t making a terrible decision trusting Zill.

Of course. You must return for order to be restored, after all.
See? Isn’t this amazing? The power to see our world, and all of Exapico’s universe.
Zillium will use that unimaginable power to find our world, and send us back to where we belong.
Finally, we can go home.
I never wanted to go home so badly that I’d sacrifice this world to do it!
I see… If you don’t wish to return, you can stay here. You’re free to make that choice.
But if I’m going to return, I need your help.
For what…?
You and I will become the eyes of the Maternal Overseer that will allow her to see into the 8th Dimension.
…?!
Do it, Prim.
Okay! I’ll sing for you, Nelo!

Prim once again began to sing EXSPHERE_NOSURGE, and suddenly it was clear exactly why the prime minister had wanted her to simply turn back.

The souls of you, me and 100,000 other humans. They will come together to create the God above all gods.
I won’t let you use Ion!/If Ion can return, that’s okay with me.
That’s impossible. You can’t stop this song by yourself.
Earthes…
Now, the God of a new world shall be born!
May the world bestow its blessing upon us all!
STOP!

Unfortunately, Delta was too late. Ion, Nelo, and Zill all vanished, and a nightmare was born.

I can see it… I can see… everything! It is so beautiful… Like a banquet of the heavens!
What…what’s going on?!
Cass, we have to stop them! Come on!
Hey, stop ordering me around! What’s going on here anyway?!
My tone’s not important! We have to stop them!
Delta, do you know something?
I had no idea anything like this was happening until we got here…
This robot was with Ion…!
drat it! Don’t get in our way!
Wh-What?!

As it happened, though, Earthes was not intending to get in their way. There was still something he could do to help even with Ion absorbed.

You…so that’s what you meant…
A new world is about to begin. The new order—
Sorry, but that’s not happening. I like the world the way it is right now!
Cass! You know what to do!
yes. I understand Ion’s feelings now.
This world doesn’t belong to you, Zill!
I know that it seems like we fight all the time, and people are selfish…
But there are also a lot of people who want to make the world a better place!
I’ll show you through this song… Please… Listen to our thoughts!

Cass began to sing the EXPAJA.

Song- “CLASS::EXPAJA;

Listen

The Maternal Overseer was sent reeling…

And Nelo and Ion returned from its clutches.

Good! Keep it up, Cass!
This song…!
Prim won’t lose…!
I can’t stand to lose!
Prim, stop!
NOOOOOO!
…Is she interfering with the song? No… At this rate…!
Don’t stop singing!
Ion!
If you stop the song, everyone will be consumed…
Cass is already at her limit, though!
It’s okay… I can still fight…
We’ll stop the Maternal Overseer!
Earthes, let’s go!
I won’t lose either!

While Cass focused on the EXPAJA, Ion and Earthes confronted the Overseer.

Boss Battle: Maternal Overseer
This is a pretty straightforward fight. She’s dangerous if you can’t manage to Break her, but if you can she goes down to one attack a round and it’s pretty easy. The best way to make sure you can always break her is to put your best Break+ Cathodes on your square attack and your +Skills on your Circle, which should maximize how many hits you get while she’s Broken. You had to beat Cosal to get here and she’s frankly easier.

They managed to batter it back once again, and stop Prim’s song.

* Pant * * Pant * Ion… Prim! Nelo! Is everyone all right?!
Zill!
The Prime Minister… And Sarly!
Hey, looks like the song worked. It’s a good thing we made it in time.
Was that your Song Magic?
It was a joint effort, between myself, the Prime Minister, and the Doctor.
The Prime Minister?! Who exactly are you…?
In the past, I was a humble scientist. Now, I’m just an Ancient like yourselves.
Oh no…
We were so close to sending Nelo back home.
Why’d you have to get in the way, Daddy?

Delta then did something that is normally pretty uncalled for. We’ll have to give him a bit of understanding given she did almost kill everyone.

Aah! What are you doing?!
I was going to ask you the same thing.
What do you mean…? Prim was just trying to help Nelo…
Don’t you understand the difference between right and wrong?
…You’re making that scary face again. You look like a demon…
You little…!
W-What?!
Delta!

And unfortunately, it seemed even with the majority of her power taken by EXPAJA, the Maternal Overseer was far from defeated.

Zill…? Is that you, Zill!?
She’s doing something!
She sure is stubborn!
Look, Undou! This is the beginning of a new world order!
Zill! Stop! This isn’t going to make the world any better!
Is she… Absorbing energy? That’s not good! Everyone, we need to get out of here!
W-Wait! What’s going on?!
We don’t have time for—
Delta, you take care of Prim! I’ll get Nelo!
Hold on, why are we helping an enemy?!
Shut up! Can’t you see something horrible’s about to happen?!
Dammit!
Prim! Come with me or you’re going to die here!

Zill! Stop this!
Come on, we can’t stay here! We have to close the barrier walls around this district!
No, Zill’s still in there!
There’s nothing we can do for her, we have to go! Now!
Zill…!
ZIIIIIIIIIIILL!

I think some answers are in order. And we’ll be getting them, next time.

Prim, I know you were conceived from the minds of an amnesiac and... Casty, but are you really so alien to human concepts that you don't see how what CLASS::EXSPHERE_NOSURGE; does it, well, insane?

Also that's the maternal Overseer? ...disappointing. Ryuju had a better design than that.

Also - life force mode? The ship consumes life force now? Wasn't it running on the AR NOSURGE tube, which is another white hole device?

e: So what precisely is Zill's plan?

1) Create an army of sharl, use the mindless one to collect people-souls (the high-frequency Genom souls in the Micro Quasar don't work)
2) Fuse into Maternal Overseer
3) ???
4) PROFIT

It was in one of the earliest updates. Zill's people modified the system to run in some sort of emergency or juryrigged mode that's taking its energy from the flask sea.

Really wonder what's up with Prim now. She just wants to help Nelo but doesn't care that she's assisting in the enslavement of everyone else. Maybe her focus on Nelo can be turned against her by telling her that Zill's plan would trap everyone else like Nelo was in the past.

What was the point in not using the PM's name up until now. It made him seem like just a generic unimportant extra, when apparently he is not. This game is super-lacking in characters already.

I was underwhelmed by that song. It wasn't bad, but I didn't think it was super either.

Yeah, the Maternal Overseer's a bit of a disappointment. I was expecting something more like the other 8th Dimensionals you fight earlier, but instead we get something that looks like Super-mode Raki instead.

It was running off the microquasar (the glowwy blue thing behind Zill & co this update, AKA the remaining energy from when they destroyed the planet) not the Ar noSurge tube. Zill pretty much just flipped the switch on the microquasar so that it went from Output mode to Absorb mode.

As far as I'm aware, it's just bog standard megalomania. Raise nonhuman army -> kidnap humans to fuel transformation -> become god.

I wonder how much of the game could have been avoided if Prim was killed. Because she has done nothing helpful but prove that all Geoijs I don't remenber how to spell that are worst than useless.

I think the idea is that if you played Ciel Nosurge you'd recognize him and wonder what happened in the interim that he's on our side/suspect he's a spy and if you didn't then they don't need to talk about him until he comes up (which is next update, we'll be getting the full story of who he is and what his deal is).

Class::EXPAJA suffers from the fact that you have to compare it with EXSPHERE_NOSURGE just by design and in turn compare Cass's decidedly decent but not amazing singer with Noriko Mitose who is loving awesome.

The enemy of my enemy is my enemy.
The only issue with Prim is that she's a kid with way too much power. She's stupid, naive and impressionable plus the only person who's sat down and had a talk with her about what's going on is Nelo (because Nelo & Zill snagged her while Delta & Casty are rather bad at keeping track of her.)
So yeah she doesn't know right from wrong, she doesn't know what she's actually doing and she's working on information provided by someone so desperate to get home they've seriously considered pseudo-genocide as an option. Nelo's also thrown the whole 'Demon' angle in to complicate things.

So really this whole situation could have been avoided if Delta & Casty had done more with Prim (and if Casty wasn't so wishy-washy about Nelo.)

I agree that it's frustrating and there seems to be rather a lot of that in this game.

So a while back Feinne and I had a conversation about how Beta Reyvateils would be really useful to fight the (Warcraft) Burning Legion, since they don't leave a body OR soul behind to work with.

Anyway this spitballed into me trying to recreate General Akane in WoW. This turned out to be REALLY HARD since there didn't seem to be much in the way of royal purple armor or anything resembling the proper shoulder-guards. I feel like I got close enough though:

Look, just sign the stupid petition. I've got stuff to do.
After Nelo's coy "maybe ion's working with me? maybe she's not? you'll just have to find out yourself!" bit in the last update I was totally expecting Delta and Cass to jump to the loving worst possible conclusion they possibly could as soon as they next met with Ion and Earthes and then we'd have another PC vs PC boss fight. I am very glad that was not the case, even if it would have been if the groups had met again under absolutely any other circumstances, given Delta's first reaction to seeing Earthes here.

Also nice to know the Prime Minister actually has a name. And are those hints of a prior relationship turned sour between him and ZJill I see? (I probably should actually read at least a little bit of the Ciel summary thing one of these days)

That''s because EXPAJA was composed by Kenji Kawai and he brought the Tokyo Philharmonic with him. It also helps to understand that in context it was not just sung by Cass, but rather her leading everyone trapped in the Flask Sea.

That said, I still think the song feels a lot stronger if you take the time to hear it on its own but it can't denied it's underplayed in-game by having to deal with EXSPHERE_NOSURGE (and by extension, Mitose being Mitose) stealing the show: there are few things that could outdo the latter, like getting the Philharmonic to do a cover of REPLAKIA or SUBLIMATION...

My postillion has been struck by lightning.
I can overlook most of the problems other people have with the game so far, but I'm starting to get more than a little tired of the way the antagonists escape and/or continue with their plans immediately after the PCs defeat them in combat, every single time. Between that and the fact that we're repeatedly getting our asses kicked plotwise it's just not doing a great job of selling the idea that we're achieving anything -- at most we're staving off the worst possible outcome, and occasionally we don't even manage that.

I think that's definitely intentional, the game is trying to sell how badly outmaneuvered we were by Zill and Nelo. Now that poo poo has really hit the fan we're going to start scraping it back.

That would be the flaw in Nelo's plan that Feinne alluded to previously: even if absorbing Nelo wasn't strictly necessary to make a proper Overseer (and makes Nelo getting home impossible), it's loving Zill, of course she would. The scorpion and the frog and all that.

Alright, it’s time for more story. Hmm? Yes, I guess I am getting a bit excited for telling this. They pulled back to Quanturv after closing a barrier on the Maternal Overseer.

Feinne’s Notes:
This next section is a bit odd, we switch back and forth between Delta and Earthes quite a bit and their initial sections are happening roughly at the same time. Both of them have to wander around a bit and talk to everyone, and we’ll be starting that with Earthes.

Earthes checked up on Prim, who was looking a bit down. We’ll see what about in a bit.

Cheer up./Prim, you’re cute.
Huh…?
Oh, thanks…

Feinne’s Notes:
The other option has a very… interesting result.

Prime, you’re cute./Cheer up.
What…?
…Are you just picking random options? You don’t even know me.
Well, I guess I do look cute, I’ll give you that.

Now back to our regular show after that rather enigmatic response from Prim.

He then talked a bit with Delta. It’s weird, though, because I’m not really sure exactly what was said. More on that later.

Ion was actually trying to save this world, huh?
Nelo said that Ion was trying to get back home with her.
I thought I couldn’t let her get away with that, but I guess it was all a misunderstanding.
Ion’s working for the sake of everyone./Ion’s seriously like an angel./Cass belongs to me.
You’re right. Ion would never think of doing something like that.
Oh, right! Sarly said she wanted to see Ion. You should drop by her place later.

Cass was next.

That’s right./You belong to me.
Your…ability, or whatever you want to call it, was pretty amazing. Just a touch to transmit your thoughts…
It was a strange feeling…
When I received that song fro you, Ion’s thoughts came along with it, too.
She was working to stop Nelo… I didn’t even know that.
Sorry. I hope you and Ion keep looking after each other.

Feinne’s Notes:
The other choices aren’t nearly as interesting, don’t particularly need to show them off. One is Delta basically admitting he loves Cass then telling us not to say anything to her, and the other two are just us being called a weirdo.

He also tried to get some information from Undou.

Huh? What’s wrong? Are you worried for your master?
The damage to her body isn’t bad. Don’t worry, she should awaken soon.
Nnn…nnnn.
You see?
You should go to her. I’m sure she’s very important to you.
Don’t let go of the people important to you, even for a moment.

However, Ion’s awakening rather interrupted that.

How are you feeling?/You’re cute while sleeping.
Were you worried about me? …Thank you.
I’m fine. I wasn’t really hurt.
I don’t have time to relax right now, though. What happened to the Maternal Overseer?
Come on, we need to go check.

With her back in the game, they headed inside to confer with Undou together.

Yes… Um, Prime Minister, what are you doing here anyway?
I was investigating something.
What…?
…I’m sorry. What Zill did to you was unforgivable.
Do you know Zill?
I’ve known her for a long time. We were involved in research together, a long time ago.
One of our laboratories was once here. It sure has changed during the time I was gone.
What were you researching?
At its core, it wasn’t so different from what she’s trying to do now.
I wanted to recover our lost planet, and secure a place to live.
…But the Maternal Overseer doesn’t seem like something peaceful like that.
…She wasn’t concerned with protecting the bodies, only gathering souls to form the core.
Once I discovered that, I fled, and unlocked Felion.
So that’s what happened…
Then why is Zill trying to create the Maternal Overseer?
Presumably to develop human souls.

I’ve never gotten the people who are actually regular humans who feel this way.

She believed humans were only capable of spreading negative emotions, like conflict and envy.
This led her to the belief that such corrupted souls require an all-powerful guide.
One of her solutions to this was the Maternal Overseer.
A being capable of Overlooking this entire universe, which could do no wrong.
That was the ideal guide which she wished for.
An ideal guide… But she’s sacrificing tens of thousands of people for that!
According to her, they aren’t sacrifices, but rather a new form of life.
In the pursuit of happiness for life, she denies people the happiness of living. Her great contradiction.
Prime Minister, um…

Humans aren’t ever going to be perfect. But maybe that’s their charm when you get down to it. Umm, sidetracked a bit there. This is about when the lights went out on them.

The power’s out!? That’s impossible…!
…Huh? It’s fixed?
Apparently it was only temporary.
But why…?
This ship is powered by energy from another universe. Only a major malfunction could cause power loss.
What?! I thought Zill said the ship’s power came from life energy.

Flashback!

What?! Are you telling the truth!?
Yes, I’m very sure, I heard her say it. She said she switched the core over to use life energy.
That’s very bad. Zill…what are you trying to do?
Um…
Ionasal, there is something I need to investigate. I apologize, but can you leave me alone for a while?
Huh? O-Okay!

Now let’s switch perspectives a bit, and roll back the clock to when they arrived.

…Yeah. But… This girl… Isn’t really a bad person.
What? You saw what she was trying to do with your own eyes, Cass.
That’s true… But Nelo just wanted to go back to where she belongs.
I can’t blame her for that.

…You made a big deal about how you were done with her, but it looks like you couldn’t let her go.
…That might… Be right. I think part of me is still concerned for Nelo…
That’s fine. If that’s what you want, then I won’t say anything else.
But that doesn’t mean she still thinks of you as her friend. We can’t just let her do what she wants.
I know, but for now let’s just let her sleep…

With Nelo and Ion out, Delta started by checking in on Prim.

… * Sigh *
Can you move? Actually, just stay out of the way for a while, okay?
Hey, wai--… H-hey…
Prim, are you feeling okay?

It’s been a long time since we talked like this.
We were held captive in the Placenta for two years. I was worried about what you were doing all that time.
I’m glad you’re okay. Nothing bad happened to you, right?
…Yeah.
Alright, that’s good.
Mommy…you aren’t mad?
Why would I be?

These conversations were just getting less and less fruitful, honestly.

And they get mad so easily.
Oh… Yes, that’s true, but we only get mad because those people are important to us.
Why would you get mad if they’re important to you?
If someone important to you is doing something dangerous, you need to stop them.
If they make a mistake, you need to correct them. That’s why we get mad.
Delta only hit you because he’s worried about you, Prim.
I…don’t get it at all.
Daddy gets mad super quick. Mad people are scary, so I don’t want to be around them.
I think the Sharl feel the same way.
The Sharl?
They said the Sharl and Genom used to be the same thing!
I’m a Genom, so I can understand them.
You can’t be friends with mad people, or even talk with them.
That’s why they need to act nice in the Flask Sea, so they stop being mad.

Why are humans always attacking other people first?

Humans have a bad habit of treating others very poorly and then assuming those they’ve been keeping down will do the same thing if given the chance and using that to justify their actions. Then again, the Sharl actually did attack first here.

But they’re attacking the Sharl, and hurting them and doing bad things to them.
Isn’t that because the Sharl are taking humans away without telling anyone why?
That’s wrong, it’s because humans won’t listen.
This conversation is going around in circles…
You and Mommy have hurt a lot of Sharl too, Daddy.
I don’t like that you did that.
You…you’d both be better off if you just dove into the Flask Sea!
Wha…!
Delta, let’s go. It’s no use talking to her right now…

See? Unproductive. Delta had a slightly different recollection of his conversation with Earthes.

Ion was actually trying to save this world.
I heard from Nelo that Ion was trying to go back with her.
I thought I could never let Ion get away with something like that, but it was all a misunderstanding.
I need to apologize to Ion when she wakes up…
Everyone makes mistakes./Seriously, you should bow down and apologize.
Are you forgiving me? You’re a lot kinder than you look.
But I’m glad to have someone like you as an ally. I look forward to working together more.

They also had some serious questions for Undou.

Are you curious?
Yes. You seemed to know Zill…
I’ve known Zill for a long time. We worked together in the past, publically and privately.
Does that mean you were…lovers?
W-Whoa, wait a second, does that mean the Prime Minister is a spy?!
No… But it is true that I worked with her when she founded the Genomirai Church.
So…you betrayed Zill?
I suppose that’s the best way to describe it.
Zill and Nelo were working together then too, although at the time our goals were the same.
But after a time, I had a realization.
Their methods would cause the destruction of our world before our ideas could come to fruition.
So…I woke you.
All of us?

It seems he’d been the one responsible for getting Felion ready to fight against the Church, though it hadn’t been enough of course.

I needed the power to dismantle the Church.
So that’s what happened…
I apologize for involving you in a situation that I myself created.
That doesn’t matter now, I’m sure you were just dong what you thought was right.
At least you’re still our ally, right?
I am, I swear it. At the very least, I am opposed to the destruction of humankind.
Huh… I have to admit it, I’m a little surprised you were the one who opened the Barrier, Prime Minister.
That reminds me… What’s your name, anyway?
Now that you mention it… I’ve never heard it, either.
My name?
…Undou Quinquaim.

After that, Delta started acting a bit oddly. He started wandering out towards the city.

Huh?
If you’re going outside, you should tell me first.
Um, I wasn’t really thinking about going outside or anything…
What are you talking about? You just put your hand on the door.
Wha…? Oh, I guess you’re right.
…Delta, are you okay?
I’m fine. There doesn’t seem to be anything wrong with my body.
…I see.

With Cass accompanying him again, they dropped in on Sarly.

Hey there. You two did a good job.
If you had taken just a little longer, the Maternal Overseer could have consumed the entire Soreil.
We got lucky. Delta was wandering around, and we just happened to…

What’s wrong?
Nothing, just… Whenever you wander off, you always seem to find trouble.
That’s not all, either… Your timing’s always just right, like when you showed up to save us.
…Why?
Don’t ask me…
More importantly, that song you sang was pretty amazing, Cass—both majestic and beautiful.
Thanks…but wasn’t that the song you created?
More or less, but I was impressed by how much the singer was able to contribute.
Fighting the Sharl has made you much stronger.
You’ve also strengthened your bonds with other people.
I…never really felt that way.
Why is the Prime Minister able to create Song Magic, anyway?
He was once a scientist. He also possesses a wealth of knowledge pertaining ot the Maternal Overseer.
It seems his goal was for the Maternal Overseer to never be created.
But… At this point we should just be thankful we manage to minimize the damage she caused.

This takes us to where the power went out.

What happened!?
Calm down!
It’s back on!?
The power supply’s unstable? That’s impossible.
This is the first time something like this happened on the Soreil, isn’t it?
…It should be fine. In theory, the power core can never be depleted, and even if it was, there’s a backup.
It was only unstable for a moment, so it was probably just a minor interruption.
Still, that was quite a shock…
We might not be able to relax for long.
…Yeah. We should head back to talk to the others about what to do next.
What are you going to do, Sarly?
I’ll continue my investigation here for a little longer. I don’t mind if you go on ahead of me.
Really? Alright then, let’s go, Delta.
Sorry, I’ll catch up with you in a bit. I want to take a walk through the town.
…Are you not feeling well?
No… I just kind of wanted to check up on Prim.
Hmph. Fine, just don’t take too long.
Sure.

Delta, though, had something else on his mind than Prim.

…I assume you have some business with me?
Did I say something?
You don’t have to say anything, it’s all over your face. It’s something you can’t tell Cass, right?
She’d just worry if I did.
I suppose I can understand that. What do you need?
It might be nothing you can help with, but…sometimes I feel like I’m…drifting away.
…What?
Uh, not like I’m fainting or something.
I can feel my body doing stuff, but it feels like I’m in a dream or something…
…So you feel as though you aren’t yourself?
Yeah, that’s it. I thought I was just being absent-minded or something, but your description makes sense.

…Sarly? Do you know something?
Oh, no, sorry about that.

Sarly seemed a bit evasive about the subject, honestly.

I don’t really know much about this kind of stuff.
Maybe the Doctor would know something?

…Wait, is he taking the day off today or something?
The line may be unstable.
Huh… Shoot, I thought he might know what was going on.
Maybe. Judging by your symptoms, though, I think it might just be fatigue.
Fatigue, huh… Well, a lot has been happening. Looking after Cass is a lot of work.
…Yeah. If you’re really concerned, I could make you a nutrient drink.
Really?
Sure, although it probably wouldn’t be more effective than a placebo.
No, that’s not gonna do much, but thanks. You’re always a lot of help.
Not really. If you want that nutrient drink, though, I can make one and give it to you next time we meet.
Sure, thanks. Cass is probably waiting; I should get going. See you later.
Take care.
Thanks.

And it seemed she knew quite a bit more than she’d told him.

Why has it progressed so far already?!
…I should have disconnected it when I had the chance…
Doctor Leolm: This isn’t your fault, Ms. Planck. You can’t blame yourself.
No, it IS my fault.
Doctor Leolm: Disconnecting it would have been impossible. Besides, this plan was my suggestion. It’s not your fault.
…I knew this would happen, but I didn’t do anything.
Probably because I wanted to see that power in action, to study it… I’m no better than a demon.
Doctor Leolm: …You know we were unable to disconnect it at the core level.
I assure you, Ms. Planck, you made the right call.
…This is more about my feelings. I’m doing something terrible to my friends.
I’m no different from Zill. I’m disgusting…
Doctor Leolm: No, you are different.
I’m not! I’m treating Delta like a test subject! I can’t even tell him and I feel miserable about it!
Doctor Leolm: That is because you’re kind.

At least she was actually concerned that what she was doing was horrible. That does put her a step ahead of Zill.

Doctor Leolm: I do know you. You can’t tell Delta and Cass because you don’t want to destroy their happiness.

Doctor Leolm: Most of your free time is devoted to researching that power.
You want to help them, and you’ll do anything to make them wait for that help even a moment less.
And the reason you do that is because you care. I know that about you.
…You’re getting awfully emotional today. You aren’t acting like yourself, Doctor.
Doctor Leolm: I know you’re trying to change the topic, but let me just say one thing.
Your method isn’t wrong. Even if the entire world turns against you, I’ll always defend you.
…What are you talking about? Usually you’re all business.
Doctor Leolm: Discussing my feelings would have only made you unhappy. Our relationship cannot grow closer, so I kept silent.
…But this time, I had to speak. You are…very important to me.
…Sorry, but I never wanted that kind of relationship. Can you stop, please?
Just…leave me alone for a while. I’m cutting this connection.
Doctor Leolm: …I understand.

Meanwhile Delta returned to the cathedral, where Nelo was awake.

…Looks like she woke up.
I have a name.
Where’s everyone else?
Don’t know. Apart from Prim, I think they’ll be fine on their own.
Prim left the city a little while ago.
Really? She’s hopeless… Well, now that you’re here Delta, I’ll go look for her.
Okay.
Keep an eye on Nelo for a while.
I know.

Cass carried you all the way here. You should at least thank her.
Why?
What do you mean “why”…
If you hadn’t interfered, I could have gone back to my world.
I shouldn’t be thanking you, I should be complaining.
Guh… First Kanon, now you. Everybody acts like saving them was a waste of time.
Sounds like you’re trying to get people to owe you.

Delta had a rather frank discussion with Nelo about the situation.

You did interfered with the Maternal Overseer, but she did bring me here.
I guess that’ll have to do. Cass isn’t expecting you to repay her, though.
What’s that mean?
She probably still thinks of you as her friend.
She tells everyone you’re not friends anymore, but I kinda don’t think that’s true, seeing as she saved you.
I don’t know what happened between you two, but it wouldn’t kill you to think about her feelings a little more.
…I like Cass a lot. She’s my best friend in this world, after all.
A logn time ago, back when the planet Ra Ciela still existed, I went with Cass to an amusement park.
You know you were there too?
Really?
I was being chased by some bad people, but she helped me out.
Wait, seriously? That means you owe her, then.
…I guess so.
Man… And you still wanted to destroy Cass’s world, with her in it?
I didn’t want to destroy the world. I just wanted to go back home.
I want Cass to have a nice life, but that’s a different thing.
I’m completing the Maternal Overseer and going home. Not even Cass gets in the way of that.
You… You got your rear end handed to you, and you’re still not ready to give up? At least you’re tenacious…
You probably don’t understand.
Yeah, I don’t understand at all.

Nelo decided to change the subject at this point.

I think it’ll interest you too.
And what could possibly do that?
Playing hide and go seek.

Come again?
I said, playing hide and go seek.
Who?
You and me.
Why?
Because I want to.
Sorry, but maybe you can do that with Prim…
Hasn’t something been bothering you lately?
Almost as if your mind is drifting somewhere far away…
If you can find me, then I’ll tell you why that’s happening.
…What do you know?
If you want to play, go outside the Cathedral. I’ll hide when you’re gone.
If you find me, you win.
…I got it.

I think that’s a good place to stop, things are about to get even more strange.
