The worst part about it is he saw Brown and Bowden and Paterno(to an extent) and he did nothing. He watched it unfold and because all coaches have these enormous egos they say "jokes on them, I'm above that happening to me, these fans worship me and all is well" and you just can't do that. If he's lucky VT will be pretty good this year and the next and he can leave on a good note but if not then the end of his career will be one big downer that will be most of what people remember him by. There is nothing sadder than watching greatness wilt.

I dunno that he will be remembered by it. I mean we are only 2 years out from Mack Brown and most people back in Austin view him very favorably. The ones that don't are the ones who don't even know who Mackovic is etc.

Brown and Bowden had higher highs but the way their careers ended was drat bad. If Beamer can put together 18-20 wins the next 2 years then the past 3 will be easily forgotten.

Honestly I see the Hokies as at least a 9 win team this year so if they underachieve again it'll definitely taint his legacy a bit to me. Or at least confirm that it's time to move on instead of waiting for him to die in his office.

With great coaches who hang on too long it sucks at the time but eventually you forget it and just remember the good stuff. Beamer's legacy or whatever will be fine, he did way too much for people to judge him based on the final few years, no matter how bad they get. Same with Kirk eventually. Hayden was completely out of gas for most of the 90s and did nothing with multiple teams that should have been Rose Bowl contenders on talent and everyone in Iowa still loves him because of the way he rebuilt the program and what he did in the 80s. Bitterness might last a little longer with Kirk because he's not nearly as charming or personable, but eventually everyone is going to come around on him as arguably the best coach in school history. His peak years were too good by Iowa standards to ignore.

Out of coaching for a year then he was a WR coach at Ave Maria University of all places (NAIA school), and since 2013 he's been the OC at Georgia State. Their academic standards for athletes are nonexistent. You know how Brian Kelly said that none of his players would get into Notre Dame without being football players? Well yeah, that's accurate, but there are division 1 schools that a lot of them would get into just based on academics. Yeah they wouldn't be Notre Dame quality but there are plenty of D1 schools with pretty low standards. But at Ave Maria? They had a kid on their football team that had a 10 on his ACT. A ten. 10. That's the level of not giving a gently caress that Tom Monaghan has as long as he can bring in kids that he thinks can play ball.
