Funny, that presentation was full of stuff that I genuinely think would be enjoyable in a fallout game. I love crafting and seeing it expanded like that appeals to me greatly. The weapon mod system looks great too, and I can't wait to customize the HELL out of my power armor.

yeah, but i'd still imagine you could take all your profit and reinvest it into your settlements for a long time before you maxxed everything, which would be fun if not really a massive difference in how much stronger it makes your character.

Nothing about skill points in the description for Intelligence.

No skills tab, button for perk chart.

Sure looks like Skills got axed and we're getting constellation-style leveling.

this is probably not gonna come anywhere close to alpha protocol in terms of pure mental player choice and roleplaying, though it'll likely equal it in jank.

that's going to make replaying as a different faction not as fun since your build is still reliant on your actions rather than leveling up and using sliders.

Power armour also looks like it makes you walk slower which is great, as that is basically the only downside possible to wearing it (and hence the only bonus awarded to people not wearing it). Hopefully this becomes a kind of unbreakable canon rule that defines power armor as such (so I can run away from it)

Also really hope they have clunky power armour footsteps. That was my one mod that I made for Fallout 3. You're welcome Bethesda.

According to the Pipboy, there are no separate skills from the SPECIAL menu and the perks menu. However, crafting has a weapon mod require rank 1 in science and crafting gives you XP. Most likely it's like Skyrim, except you don't have skill levels that increase with use. I'm guessing each level up gives you one point to put into a skill (which they call perks now), which either unlocks something unique automatically or opens up something unique you can spend another skill point to unlock.

Could be that you have to allocate power to different systems, or maybe slow run/walk speed is a tradeoff for JETPACK MODE or something IDK

Anyway, I'm calling it: there are no skills. Science! is actually just a crafting perk for energy weapons with a corresponding perk for Guns and Explosives. The only thing you'll get are perks that your SPECIAL stats allow you to obtain. Also, no Traits because Bethesda hates them for some reason.

If the lack of skills means I can now pick up a gun off the ground and actually do some damage with it, then it's fine by me. Shooters become really lovely when you try to make your skill with a gun scale with a number instead of your own player ability.

I wasn't hype for the game but watching the footage, I am now. I actually cringed a little because I didn't want to get hype for a Bethesda title. Probably my favorite new feature is that power armor actually works like an actual "powered" armor now.

I'll wait for a mod that replaces VATS with slow motion though.

Skyrim referred to the things you pick in the level up screen as perks. Another option than what I said before would be buying perks in skill trees, which increases the rank of that skill tree.

Edit: So you buy the perk that let's you talk in public without pooping your pants and your speech skill rank goes up because your pants are not full of poop.

It doesn't look nearly as dull as skyrim tbf, although these are directed previews. I think Bethesda could excel if they just embrace the camp stupidity inherent to their games rather than 'boring interchangeable nordic man gives you a quest to kill 10 bandits, a quest so dull it was literally made by a computer.' Like keep the setting fairly serious and low-key but juxtapose it with a lot more fun stuff. Not 'zany' but imaginative poo poo like they did with the dark brotherhood in Oblivion or something. Just spitballing here.

Level 3, choose between:

Repair
Science
Medicine
Explosives
Guns
Energy Weapons
Bloody Mess

I can see this happening. I don't mind it, because skills mattered very little in Bethesda's system anyway, but if Obsidian gets their hands back in the game the percentages will be back and actually tuned properly.

IT'S NOTHING LIKE THE RPGS OF MY DAY!

Real RPGs have detailed dialog choices differentiated by your gender, race, intelligence, favourite animal, they also had hundreds of skills measured in 5 digit numbers at least.

Oh and of course back in the day we had no such things as voice acting, graphics or user friendly interface, this game has that so that must mean it's not a real RPG.
