I have no idea what the official definition of the terms are, but I would think the vast majority of voters would call pretty much any democrat "left wing" and pretty much any republican "right wing". For whatever that is worth, which I guess isn't much.

I'm so loving sick of hearing people pull this dumb poo poo as if the world-wide left/right scale means one goddamn thing in a U.S. election. One of the interesting bits of the "Dean Scream" story is that it demonstrates how far CNN has fallen in terms of credibility. They actually publicly apologized for focusing on that story so much since it turned out it was entirely a creation of the media. No way CNN would apologize for all the lovely reporting they do today. They'd have to give the ombudsman their own show just to handle it.

I guess the rest of the world is probably going by a more general definition: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Left-wing_politics

I think even by your strict definition, though, Bernie falls within the left-wing

I'm pretty sure this time around there will be candidates who actually do really dumb things instead of made-up media things. 2012 didn't have a "Dean Scream" because Rick Perry actually couldn't remember the third department he would eliminate, Herman Cain really did quote the Pokemon movie song and use the default tax rates from Sim City, Newt Gingrich really did want to take us to the moon, Paul Ryan really did scrub some clean pans for a photo op, and Mitt Romney really did say 47% of America could get hosed for all he cared. Those were things that actually happened, so there was pretty much no need at all for media-manufactured "gaffes".

The Rick Perry example was the only one that straight up ended a campaign in a moment though.

Well I guess you could argue the 47% comment ended Romney as well, but certainly not as swiftly and dramatically

The Dean campaign was over when he lost Iowa so badly, not when his voice did a funny thing in a speech where he was trying to encourage his supporters in spite of that huge loss.

Finishing in third place in Iowa is hardly a campaign deathblow as has been demonstrated several times in the recent past. Dukakis and Bush Sr came in third. McCain and Clinton came in forth, with Clinton only getting 3% (against an Iowa native, granted).

That might hurt him in the primary in some states, but that's the kind of position on criminal justice that wins over white voters. Generally, white people like it when police are used as a weapon against minority populations. It makes them feel all warm and fuzzy.

The only reason the tide is turning now among some people is because criminal justice reform people can fend off attacks of "hating the police" by pointing to videos of "the bad apples" that need to be taken care of. Any kind of discussion of structural change in the institution of policing is going to be met with hostility by "tough on crime" folks no matter how good the actual data is, though.

Among the D&D crowd it makes him a non-starter. However, it's possible it could peel off the Reagan Democrats. So I expect O'Malley to not 100% walk back his approach to policing during his previous times in office. We'll probably get some spin from him where he attempts to recontextualize his past actions under the banner of something like "smart policing" that is basically something that sounds like criminal justice reform but crammed with dog whistles.

edit: Looking into some of his statements about policing it looks like he's already begun to do some of that, but his campaign website is kind of thin when it comes to policy proposals. He is claiming to have reformed the Baltimore PD, though:

quote:

Made Baltimore City A Safer Place
O’Malley was elected on a mandate to make Baltimore safer. Under his leadership, Baltimore achieved the steepest reduction in crime of any major city, while bringing homicides below 300 per year for the first time in a decade. O’Malley also expanded services drug treatment, doubling funding and leading the way to a 30% drop in the number of overdose deaths.

Policed the Police
O’Malley’s administration took strong steps to police the police – increasing minority hiring, improving accountability, and fully staffing a civilian review board. Under his leadership, the city reduced police shootings to their lowest level in a decade.
