Was Rage not programmed with one of the more recent id Tech engines? I didn't notice any texture pop in the E3 demo nor any of the blurriness seen in Rage or parts of Wolfenstien. I remember everyone at the time wanting Bethesda to switch to id Tech when Zenimax bought them because it was "so much better".

I'm sure traces of it exist, just as traces of Quake 1 exist in Source. The point is that it's very recognizably the same engine that they've been pushing to the breaking point since 2006, whether it's called Gamebryo or not.

Walrus Pete posted:I didn't, but I thought I remembered people being impressed with it on the tech side, if not the gameplay. Maybe I got it backwards? I dunno. Well, Wolfenstein: New Order and Doom 4 are using it as well. The problem with Rage was that the engine was a bit too much for the contemporary hardware, basically. Everything currently in your FOV was highly detailed and crisp, thanks to their Megatexture tech, but as soon as you touched the mouse, everything that was just outside the FOV was a blurry piece of poo poo. W:NO doesn't have this problem.

The fact that several bugs and many characteristics of the engine are still around in Skyrim should tell you it's still heavily based off the same code from 14 years ago.

Gamebryo - not Bethesda's creation, but the thing that you can license - isn't bad. It's actually decent. Note that Gamebryo is often referred to as a game engine (pretty sure it's also marketted as such), but it's really not. It's a suite of code libraries that's not much more then a graphics renderer. The developer still needs to add all of the other stuff that goes into a game engine like AI, animation, gameplay logic, etc, etc. If you take the game engine that was used for Oblivion, then Gamebryo is in there somewhere doing its thing, but it's burried under layers and layers of Bethesda's own wonky spaghetti code. For some dumb reason probably related to licencing a lot of game engines that use Gamebryo are called "Gamebryo" as well which has resulted in a lot of confusion on the Internet (Oblivion, Civ4, Playboy: The Mansion and Epic Mickey don't all use the same engine) and people blaming Gamebryo for the problems Bethesda's lovely QA and wonky spaghetti code caused.

I like all the lovely "quirks" of the engine. I love reloading a save and seeing a guy I killed and blew up due to Bloody Mess reconstitute himself as some mockery of a man and then fly apart as the game loads in.

I heard they stopped licensing Gamebryo because they had so many hacks to hacks on hacks that Gamebryo was accidentally left out of the compile one day and the game kept working so they dropped the expense.

I still love how people hate Gamebryo just because it is Gamebryo. Like, none of you even know what Gamebryo is, or what part of the game make it "gamebryo", but the game from the same creators of it's predecessor looks similar to said predecessor, that must mean it is the same poo poo. And even if they are using a pre-licenced engine, would you trust Bethesda to write their own engine?
