Bang! You're dead.
Was Rage not programmed with one of the more recent id Tech engines?

I didn't notice any texture pop in the E3 demo nor any of the blurriness seen in Rage or parts of Wolfenstien.

I remember everyone at the time wanting Bethesda to switch to id Tech when Zenimax bought them because it was "so much better".

The point is that it's very recognizably the same engine that they've been pushing to the breaking point since 2006, whether it's called Gamebryo or not.

Well, Wolfenstein: New Order and Doom 4 are using it as well. The problem with Rage was that the engine was a bit too much for the contemporary hardware, basically. Everything currently in your FOV was highly detailed and crisp, thanks to their Megatexture tech, but as soon as you touched the mouse, everything that was just outside the FOV was a blurry piece of poo poo. W:NO doesn't have this problem.

I'm not sure what's confusing about that. They haven't licensed Gamebryo for their engine since New Vegas.

I'm glad you brought this up because I'd forgotten how laughably bad player-based lighting (pip-boy and torches, mostly) has been in their games up to and including Skyrim. Here's hoping they noticed that it's in fact kind of embarrassing and made some improvements.

There were portions of fallout that legitimately could have been scary if they had any sort of dynamic lighting

that & the "bustling" towns full of 5 people really added to the immersion

My point, which has been unclear I guess, is that their games being broken as gently caress isn't due to what they've been licensing it's because they're poo poo at making working games.

No one is denying that. gently caress it. I'm just going to quote myself:
Gamebryo - not Bethesda's creation, but the thing that you can license - isn't bad. It's actually decent. Note that Gamebryo is often referred to as a game engine (pretty sure it's also marketted as such), but it's really not. It's a suite of code libraries that's not much more then a graphics renderer.
The developer still needs to add all of the other stuff that goes into a game engine like AI, animation, gameplay logic, etc, etc. If you take the game engine that was used for Oblivion, then Gamebryo is in there somewhere doing its thing, but it's burried under layers and layers of Bethesda's own wonky spaghetti code.
For some dumb reason probably related to licencing a lot of game engines that use Gamebryo are called "Gamebryo" as well which has resulted in a lot of confusion on the Internet (Oblivion, Civ4, Playboy: The Mansion and Epic Mickey don't all use the same engine) and people blaming Gamebryo for the problems Bethesda's lovely QA and wonky spaghetti code caused.

It was the assertion that they licensed it from Morrowind to New Vegas. I see now that you were talking timeline not actually lisencing it to the New Vegas developers and somehow skipping Fallout 3. English, man.

I still love how people hate Gamebryo just because it is Gamebryo. Like, none of you even know what Gamebryo is, or what part of the game make it "gamebryo", but the game from the same creators of it's predecessor looks similar to said predecessor, that must mean it is the same poo poo.

And even if they are using a pre-licenced engine, would you trust Bethesda to write their own engine?

It's because Bethesda completely overhauled the graphics portion of their engine's codebase for Skyrim.

Sankis posted:

It's kind of unavoidable that save files get fairly large in games like this. For example when you drop an item at one end of the gameworld, walk to the other side and then save. It needs to remember that item you dropped, so it's there for you to pick up again when you come back.

Ah yes silly me to complain about garbage pre-rendered lighting. Static floodlights don't alleviate this concern.

Has there been any footage showing an honest to goodness flashlight moving and dynamically illuminating an area? I mean it's 2015 so I hope so but I just assumed not. Please link if you got it!

Well Skyrim had a budget of 85 million dollars, and GTA 5 had a budget of 265 million, there is just a slight difference there is terms of how much money went into each game.
