lmao, their landlord is raising the rent by 10% with a promise to raise it another 10% in two years

to help with fundraising they have decided to create a new role called the "philanthropist", a non-member who gets 24/7 access anyway as long as they pay a monthly fee. anyone willing to put up the cash can be one, they don't even have to apply in person, they can send a proxy to the meeting on their behalf

however, because anarchy, any single member can get that paying philanthropist's access revoked just by saying so. some people pointed out that this was dumb but were shouted down because only an unexcellent dumb jerk would do that for no reason and nb doesnt have any unexcellent jerks

quote:

We need more recurring donations.
We want to make people happy.
There's a bunch of other stones to kill with birds or whatever the table-turning phrase is.
We've got a keycard system that works great.
A lot of folks want to use it outside of the regular "open hours"
Membership works, but its problematic.
Takes a while for people to go through the process, especially if they just want 24/7 access
24/7 access isn't really well defined
The proposal: Philanthropists
We have a status for someone who isn't a member, but has been recognized as Excellent and should be given 24/7 access
They or their proxy comes to the meeting. A member sponsors them. They are then asked to give a recurring donation (same rate as member dues), sign a pledge about what it means to have 24/7 access, what it means to close up, how they can get access revoked, etc. Turned into the secretary
Revocation: A member brings it up saying "I think they've been unexcellent", and it is immediately revoked. If mediation succeeds, they have access reinstated. Otherwise it remains revoked.
This formalizes what it means to have 24/7 access: the responsibilities, how to get it, a clear path, etc
Noisebridge gets someone who would be happy to give a recurring donation and someone to help keep the space open while still protecting Membership.
It's on the wiki: Philanthropist and Philanthropist/Pledge

Comments

Information on people that have grandfathered 24/7 access.
If someone already has 24 hrs access, Why does only one member gets to revoke the access?
:frogsiren:Poop example...:frogsiren:
Anyone, including our members still abide by our Code of Conduct regardless of status. Mediation is called for. Any situation should be mediated and a resolution should be worked on.
It is decidedly UNexcellent for any member to just say I don't like this person and to remove access for no reason.
This system is looking to define clearly who gets 24 hour access.
Clear distinction between "Philanthropist" and "Associate Member".
Members have a distinct definition given by the State of CA, and for various reasons it is extremely difficult to remove someone from membership. For this reason we want to make it difficult to become members because we want to make sure we have excellent people join the space.
Philanthropists are not member; they are people that continue to contribute donations to the space. With a sponsorship by a member, they can gain 24/7 access without having to apply for membership.
Is this going to have any conflict with our current 11am-11pm status? Answer: No, nothing changes.
Talked about control for after-hours access and for working on a Hotline to resolve difficult situations in the middle of the night.

All that means in real terms is that one has an RFID keyfob that springs the maglock from the outside. Otherwise someone inside has to buzz the person in. Apparently, one can also log into their server remotely and run a command to spring the maglock. I couldn't get that to work, though it may require membership rights. I didn't try that hard because someone let me in within about ten seconds. "Access" clearly doesn't include habitation rights.

The philanthropist membership is a "we need more money" gambit. Usually someone has to be sponsored by a member (or two iirc), attend governance meetings and then they'd also be responsible for the space. The philanthropist membership would give people the access without the responsibility and social implications of membership. It's only complicated if you are socially retarded, but then here we are.

http://yespipipime.tumblr.com/post/111825476516/noisebridge-a-capitalist-hackerspace

quote:

Noisebridge, a capitalist hackerspace
Letter to Noisebridge and to members of Noisebridge,

Recently I was kicked out of the space, and I wanted to share my side of the story.

First off, I’m a somewhat new regular in the space, coming for a couple of years, and some people may know me for working on web mapping, and full stack development. I also had been pumping up my event for the “Transgender Violence Mapping Project” scheduled for Thursday.

I am a student of city planning, a native Californian, a socialist, and an activist, and I am disgusted by the situation in San Francisco today. In California, all progressive change comes from citizen led initiatives, and I am scared of the capitalists who recently moved here, who think capitalism and deregulation is progressive. Capitalism and deregulation are why the tech industry is known for systemic racism, sexism, bro culture, and worse.

I don’t feel like I need to justify my politics to you all, but I want you to know what influenced me when making propaganda directed at gentrifiers and nouveau rich capitalists who are colonizing neighborhoods like the Mission and the Bayview where people of color are getting kicked out.

I whipped up some propaganda and wanted to take it to the street. The first time, I printed at a local print shop. The next time I was working on my propaganda, it was at Noisebridge. I printed about 25 pages there.
After printing, Torrie, a member who I had talked to earlier that day, who had disagreed with my propaganda and who justified gentrification and removal of middle income families to me, approached my friends and I and said “What the gently caress is this? You’re not welcome here and you need to leave.” As we packed our bags, Torrie and her friend stood right next to us, glaring with their arms crossed. They followed us out the door and glared at us as we went down the hall.

Now I noticed I’m on the 86 list. It says on there that the decision to 86 some of the people was reached by a consensus. I don’t think there was any consensus here. I will be present at the next meeting to discuss this.

I have always had a tenuous relationship with this space. In this space I was told women are better at making babies than being programmers. I have been told that transgender people get “too butthurt about things”. The people who told me these things were not kicked out of the space. They didn’t even feel bad about saying those things to me. And because this is a public space, I want to clean that poo poo up, and make this place better. That’s why I come back, and that’s why I am having an event here about violence against Trans Women here Thursday.

I understand that you may disagree with my politics, and you may think it’s not a great message, but removing anti-gentrification activists because it makes “some members uncomfortable” is a farce. And the flyer is not my manifesto, it’s just a noise in the din surrounding the hot topic issue.

So I ask you all: Can we discuss me being 86ed, and the state of me hosting an event in the space SOON, because I need to know if I need to find a new venue. I also would like to discuss the inappropriate actions of Torrie.
