Not a fan of game-stopping (or slowing) weapon menu myself, nor all the brown in the supposed hell.

I also don't like how vanilla XCOM doesn't allow me to do anything but move a second unit if I'm already moving a unit myself, and I hate hate hate hate the 2 hour long cutscenes for sniper overwatch shots.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6caHKFCe8o

here's an example, my bolt action sniper takes ~15 seconds to shoot the 'zerker.

The big thing that stood out to me was the art direction. Everything I've seen is either brown, dusty, rocky landscape or a factory. They get to design Hell, they could let their imaginations run wild and make the most hosed up setting imaginable, and instead they decide to make the game take place in levels that look the same as every other generic shooter.

The movement also seemed rather slow but I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt that they intentionally went slow for the sake of demoing the game.

Yeah the movement was slowed down compared to what they showed for the multiplayer parts. Still, brown hell like it's 2003 shooters? Weapon menues that slow the game down to a crawl?

The chainsaw won't save that. Might be fun in multi, might suck. I have higher hopes from Fallout 4 (MODS!) and XCOM2 (MODS! BRADFORD! SNAKETITS!) myself.

I'm with you on the menu. That was a weird choice. Movement didn't feel odd to me. It's not quake 3, and it's not a CoD style game with a sprint. But the smooth sliding to the start and stop felt like original Doom. Distance was hard to judge in the original, and I'd buy that this is equivalent movement speed for the size of the environment and enemies. It certainly seemed good enough to dodge fire.

Heh. Not to be that-guy, still, but a doom mod for xcom would work great. It's basically the same idea. There's was a roguelike doom adaptation, so anything's possible.

Does it even make sense anymore from a gameplay perspective to have XCOM soldiers with their national flags?

Hell, there was a turn based doom adaptation called Doom RPG ]for phones before they became smart.

man. I wonder if I should shelve my crazy GI Joe thing, and instead do a an Xcom 2 Noir mod. Where the vipers have tommy guns and little lacy things over their faces. And the regular humans are all in zoot suits with bowlers.

Grrlserkers would get brass knuckles.

The filter would be black and white with extra shadows. Any time a dame was in frame, the bloom would go nuts.

I hope that Vipers are not always an instakill like that, and more like a Seeker, in that you have a turn or two to save the affected soldier before the life is squeezed out of them.

They also confirmed that a Viper can't tug and hug on the same turn. It was jazzed up a little bit to make a more exciting video.

They did say the Viper can do that, but they require both moves to do so (seems like they only tug if they only got one action left)

I think, ideally, there's 2 vipers. One tugs you, and the other hugs you.

I think they can, but they need the whole turn to do it.

Even without that, tugging sounds bullshit already just because she just pulls someone to the open, then the friendly ADVENT soldier right next to her will get an easy kill.

If you don't have troopers in a position to do something about it, maybe, and it presumably has a minimum range or similar restriction that you'll have to work around.

And yeah, no different from an alien grenading your cover in Enemy Unknown.

Yeah considering everything else that's been confirmed as a little wonky about the gameplay video I'd not be surprised if tugging required the Viper to be closer, since hugging is already not instant death.

I mean, even just beyond that, the XCOM Ranger straight up Rules of Nature'd ol' Snake Tits after that little trick. Solomon pointed out that such a trick wouldn't work on a Swoletoid unless he was already tired. So I'd not be surprised if that was embellished as well.

They might have, but I wouldn't be surprised if Vipers would have relatively low health compared to Pectoids. I also expect the sword to do a lot of damage since it's melee and it did left her in the open, without cover.

The next movie better not make me shave anything :(

The without cover part was what struck me in regards to the melee hit. it looks like a finisher move, make sure you get that last alien, rather than an opener. Just from leaving you exposed for the follow up alien round. I can see people bitching about Rangers dying to stupid things regularly.

I didn't get the impression turn mechanics worked the same there. It didn't seem to show that something like the melee attack necessarily meant the end of the rangers actions.

Take everything you've seen in the preview video with a good amount of salt. Except the rookie dashing to open to be flanked by the turret, that's just a rookie being a rookie. Just like the original preview video of XCOM2012, devs are not giving a single gently caress about movement or action points or whatever just to make the action seem seamless. Like the viper tug&hug, reinforcements shooting the turn they enter, support moving, picking up friend, and still having blue and yellow movement. Also, every character has two >>'s under their nameplate, which denotes movement just like the big pips in EU/EW. It's much more clear when you're in concealment. Of course, when the combat starts, it gets ignored - support moves once, doesn't lose movement pip.

And for the nade, I think that's just a minor graphical deviation from where it was aimed at.
