Be Kind Rewind was marketed as "Jack Black and Mos Def have to recreate movies with no budget" and it turns out that in addition to this the store that they work at is going out of business and they have to save it.

I remember that the early marketing for The Watch went out of its way not to show the alien stuff but then Trayvon Martin got murdered and them hunting down the alien became the focus of the movie's advertising and they tried to downplay the neighborhood watch stuff instead.

The trailer didn't hide that so much as make it look like it was the frame story for a bunch of sketches when in the actual movie the "sweded" movies were like one five-minute sequence and most of the film was a bittersweet movie about a movie store going out of business.

I don't really follow much behind-the-scenes drama in Hollywood, is there a particular reason why Judd Apatow's cinema career plummeted off of a cliff after This Is 40? I remember a lot of grumbling surrounding that movie (especially accusations of nepotism with casting his family members in it and how out-of-touch it was to have the family be so wealthy and well-off) but it still made back almost twice its budget domestically, having him going from being involved in multiple movies a year to putting out one movie in three years is a hell of a drop off even accounting for his increased involvement in television.

Honestly I think it's just that a lot of the people he was working with in that boom from like '06 to '11 have become successful enough to make deals and get films made without his help now. Rogen & Goldberg have graduated to doing their own stuff; same with Nicholas Stoller, Jake Kasdan, and Paul Feig.

Death to Smoochy perhaps? I think a lot of people expected it to be a light hearted comedy about children's entertainers, instead of a demented homicidal Robin Williams and jokes about nazis and heroin abuse.

The Crying Game surprised a lot of people too, but I was too young to remember how it was marketed before theatrical release. Apart from the obvious reasons (if somehow this hasn't already been spoiled for you, don't ruin it by googling), the first half hour of the movie is seemingly setting it up to be a psychological thriller which is...rather different from the rest of the movie.

I don't think this is quite the same thing you're talking about, but it brings to mind Eyes Wide Shut. It seemed that a lot of people were disappointed that it wasn't nonstop, wall-to-wall, no-holds-barred, world-class-kinky sex. Instead, we got, mostly, Tom Cruise wandering around undergoing a personal crisis questioning his manhood. Even the actual orgy scene was so highly stylized that it wasn't actually erotic.

No, I had only heard of the film through RedLetterMedia's "Half in the Bag" review series. Literally the only place I'd heard anything about the film. It's not surprising to me at all that their opinion was not shared by others, but that's why my original commend was phrased as a question.

I haven't seen The Ninth Gate, although it's on my list of to-watch movies. It just hasn't yet reached the "now" priority.

As far as Kubrick is concerned, I'm not aware of any abusiveness in his personal life, although if the complaints of some actors are to be taken at face value, it would seem he could have been more sensitive on the set.

I don't think anything portrayed in EWS is meant to be taken as Kubrick's own ideas about anything that sex typically is or should be. Every sex-related episode in that movie is clearly impersonal at best and highly dysfunctional at worst, the experiences of a character who is confused and pretty much literally looking for trouble but doesn't really know how to find it.

The Adjustment Bureau - It was marketed as a sci-fi conspiracy thriller. It's a quasi-conspiracy romance story involving angels and God's plan. It really kind of seemed to turn into a very aggressive e-harmony/Christian Mingle campaign.

I don't really want to dwell on this or think about it too much, but Roman Polanski is obviously not your average street-level sexual offender. He's someone who has thought a lot about sex and consent and how it affects people. It's impossible not to think that while he's committing sexual assault, he knows exactly how much it's going to mess someone up.

I mean I don't really remember the details? I just made an offhanded comment that was apparently on the wrong part of town... I think what they said about the movie is that they didn't like it, but that critics did, and the reasons they gave for not liking it sounded pretty straightforward to me. If I recall correctly, they said that the commitment to having the actors age in real time came at the cost of basically every other aspect of the movie, leaving it with really mediocre writing and acting which the gimmick didn't make up for. How obviously you're making the gamble that your child actor will grown into a decent actor over the course of shooting this movie. But it's even possible that they said in their review that people liked it. I was really just wracking my brain for a movie that fit "critics loved it, people didn't" because I KNEW that I knew of a movie like this, but I couldn't for the life of me remember it. Rather than googlesperge the entire thing I just said "wasn't boyhood like that?" and everyone jumped on me. I get it, I was wrong.

The quality of RLM's "reviews" are insanely hit or miss. Some of their Half in the Bag segments have good discussions and talk about films in a rational manner, and sometimes they just spew dismissive generic bullshit.

The trailer for Hot Fuzz was primarily made up of shots from the climatic action sequence from the end of the film.

Also, all the trailers I saw for Pursuit of Happyness made it look like the story of a man who achieved the American dream by solving a Rubik's Cube.

I'm reminded of a Danish movie from the 60s or 70s. I don't recall the title, but the trailer was on a DVD of some other movie from the same era. It was some kind of bedside film (ie porn but with mainstream actors in non-loving roles). Several times in the trailer it was repeated: "Clara Pontoppidan is also in (the movie)". At the time she was at least 75.
