MY HARLEY IS COOL
Taking a short break from Moribito before the last arc (holy crap, that show is awesome) I gave Death Parade a 3 episode test and holy poo poo does it pass.

Each episode just got better and better, by episode 3 I was totally buying it. Love the stories and the format they're presented in. I think it was going to be kind of like a danganronpa trial with ridiculousness and crazy poo poo but it's a pretty interesting collection of stories of the human condition.

Really cool show so far, hope it stays good.

If it helps these aren't super long either. Tatami Galaxy is 11 episodes (only seen the first ep, will revisit), Kyousugiga with 10 proper episodes (there's ep 0, ep 5.5 is live-action and examines some elements, and 10.5 a recap of the entire series), and Ping Pong is also 11 episodes.

This is one of the good things about the economy going to poo poo. Much easier to recommend stuff to people when it's not 5 thousand episodes long.

It ends up being an almost entirely personal story, with the stuff about who has the right to judge a human being, and how and the character(s) who represent that conflict getting only a very brief scene at the very end that feels like a sequel hook but will probably never be followed up. I was a little disappointed by that, but the personal stuff is still good on its own.

e: Even that might be selling it a little short, because there's some thematic overlap between the two. It's a good show, people should watch it.

Davincie, thanks for recommending Spice & Wolf, allthough it didn't quite fit the original intent for my request My original post

Gotta check some of the other recommendations, late reply but I find hilarious that twelve kingdoms was recommended because I wrote it in a stupid japanophile way. (That was exactly what I wanted by the way) Is Escaflowne any good? The premise seems close to Twelve Kingdoms.

Talking of Spice & Wolf, holy poo poo I don't think I've seen character chemistry work that well in any fictional work ever - but then again my experience is limited. There's something special about the series how Holo isn't pandering to the viewer, but actually has an agency although the last plotline kinda defeats this but, uhh and subverts your and the protagonist's expectations and it's all the better for it. Where in other series you'd expect her to say something and she would, in Spice & Wolf she says something else and it completely fits the character without being some lovely stereotype. It's so bizarre.

Also, kudos for the series making me feel dumb a couple of times. The money speculation especially.

Are the light novels worth reading? Never read any LNs in my life.

The Spice & Wolf LN's are pretty good and worth reading, even though I kind of stalled around vol 7 due it being a collection of side stories. They also have to advantage of have an official translation so you don't have to worry about whether it's been translated Chinese whispers style through four different languages.

I don't really get how on earth that happens to begin with. What's so hard about getting a copy of the original Japanese?

To stay on topic more, I recently caught up with JoJo. It's rather amazing how dull the first 8 eps were, then it just continually improved from there. I haven't seen every action anime under the sun, but I'm hard pressed to think of any fights which compare to the quality I saw.

Stardust Crusaders has been so much better. For anyone who found the first season to be a bit of a hard watch, pick up stardust crusaders, it's leagues ahead. One of my favourite aspects of it, is how all the characters get their moments and are treated more as equals. You don't have any of that "will Goku get there in time" stuff, each of the dudes can handle themselves.

I was being hyperbolic (on the internet!) and it's usually pretty rare but when it does happen not really a case of that, more if there's a French translation it's easier to find someone to who can translate French to English than Japanese, especially if it's something being done in someone's spare time as a hobby.

For a while new chapters of Attack on Titan were going Japanese scans -> Chinese scans -> English until CR picked it up.

Most of Escaflowne is :eyepop:ingly incredible but it does have a pretty weak ending. Definitely worth watching unless you really can't get past the weird noses.

I like the Spice & Wolf LNs quite a bit and if you like the show at all they are worth reading. The latest one was really, really good.

Ah yeah! I've heard of that! Isn't it supposed to be one of the more recommended/liked titles in ADTRW? I've been meaning to ingest more shoujo stuff since I don't read/watch nearly enough of it as I should, nor does my friend, so maybe we'll get to watching that!

It runs in Gangan Online, which is a web magazine, but it's also been published in issues of something called Shoujo Romance Girly, so.

Shounen seems to be the demographic most people label for it.
