I just want to say for the record that until I started teaching myself how to draw I thought artists were all were lazy assholes. I now know better. Even on things I have mostly down I will sometimes spend an hour redrawing the same thing until it looks right to me. So, the real problem is, most people don't get any form of art education at all anymore and then expect it to be easy because that one kid in middle school who probably spent all of his free time drawing could draw a mean Goku in like 30 seconds so how hard can it be.

You know, I'm sorta disappointed with reality. I feel like I was tricked, when I went to Uni, I met people like me for the first time. Friends who pushed, inspired, encouraged and competed with each other, people who just wanted to make cool poo poo. I'm back home in the most polluted town in England, and people don't think I deserve minimum wage for designing a logo.

Yeah it's a real shame they don't teach you much about how to go about practically making money as an artist while they're taking all that money from you and encouraging you to discuss what inspires you. Go to Waterstones and find yourself a copy of this book and stay indoors reading it front to back. http://www.amazon.co.uk/How-be-Illustrator-Darrel-Rees/dp/1856695301

It's funny, my dad was an oil painter and rock carver, my mom is a weaver and potter, and when we were growing up their friends would still tell them I draw too much and it wasn't worth anything. Getting a kid into being an accountant or some other unfun thing would be so much more rewarding! I have no idea why there are so many people out there that think art isn't a worthy career. It's ridiculous. Maybe people are jealous that we actually have jobs we like?

I remember a story about a some rich guy who legit believed that statues of nude women were EXACTLY how women should look, and he refused to sleep with his wife over the fact she had pubic hair. she ended up leaving him for an artist, because that guy wasn't an idiot. I'm sure there's other old stories, but it wouldn't be hard to fathom the idea of people being jealous of more than just the fact you enjoy your job and can outpace their scribbles. the other robot thing wasn't quite working right, so I started on the thing related to it. maybe It'll make things easier I dunno. The best way to do this that I can think of is to draw/sketch a character from the front view and from the side portrait view in a neutral position. You can verify the anatomy of those views trivially with davinci circles/golden ratio measurements. Since you are working digitally it's also really simple to make some custom rulers to determine the size of each body part relative to the others, etc. Then draw your crazy pose until it looks like the same character when all three views are consulted at once. Effectively, build a reference in your brain for treating your character as a 3d object. This takes a long time (for me, anyway, since I tend to describe my characters with lots of words then struggle to figure out how to apply them to the drawing), but is how I am able to draw anatomy consistently for the same character. The more you repeat this process, the easier it gets, and the more body types you tackle, the easier it becomes to do later with even less initial sketching. Determining the anatomy of something that doesn't exist and has no reference is hard, because human beings have great deviation in shape, size, and proportion. By creating the reference you're answering your own questions, rather than asking for help. Many things can look right, so the most important thing is that it looks like your character. Even if you have a background in figure drawing, once people try to tackle something that only exists as an idea, it typically becomes difficult again. Generally, each major component of the body of a character takes an hour or two for me, at minimum, with the big exception being the head/face, since it's as complicated as drawing the rest of the body, usually. As far as feedback goes, the thing that bothers me most about your image is that the position looks incredibly uncomfortable. The geometry of the left shoulder relative to the back doesn't work for me. It seems impossible for her legs to be crossed and pulled inward and her elbow to be inwards to her knees with her chest on the ground, but the shading on the stomach makes it appear she's on her side, which clashes with the shading on the back. It's better than I would do blind without reference, though.

Art's a pretty self-serving thing. Most of it is not meant for anyone but the artist's own interests. Maybe you should go learn to draw and draw the things you want instead of trying to tell others what they're supposed to do? I wasn't planning on posting this here but y'know what, I think someone like you would enjoy it. Here's a plastic doll.

Maybe you should go act like you care about something other than your own personal interests somewhere where the people bend over backwards for you? character design for the Niner thing. he's kinda sorta the Villian, but he's a bumbling idiot. Odd how jumpy ppl are about critique in this thread but not in the other. Troposphere is right about the body types, it's not just that though, the poses are stiff and unnatural, the figures are unaccomplished compared to colors and line work. Anime/ manga guys study anatomy and figure drawing like everyone else, it's actually harder for them because they need to stylize it in a specific way so it doesn't clash with the heads. Look at Shirow for example, or the guy who lead artisted on Valkyrie of the Battlefield. Very stylized yet convincing.

Yeah but they never actually talked about the poses Like if you're gonna have criticism and the only thing you'll talk about is the bodytypes then maybe you aren't looking for anything other than that. I mean yeah the poses aren't all that great but y'know they could've said something and offered some sort suggestions on how to fix it or redlined or y'know anything other than 'pls stop posting barbie dolls'. Yeah, we get it, varying body types is important but you could learn to be nice about that. Diabetes Forecast fucked around with this message at 23:40 on Jun 19, 2015 |

I'm not sure how these classify as nice or even really helpful. 'I noticed you tend towards the same body type alot. perhaps you should attempt to vary that a bit so you can get better used to drawing different body forms.' Maybe further explain what you mean specifically to each picture. Then if you'd be assed you could post examples of other body types to attempt. I went to art school for four years. crying during critique was a very common occurrence and people who couldn't take it didn't last very long. was it always fair? not at all, but the art world isn't fair and it taught me some very important lessons and made me toughen up. it's a very humbling experience, and one I think all artists would benefit from. no one owes you niceness for your art. art directors aren't going to let you down easy when you plop down nonsense in front of them. if you're just drawing for hobby then fine, whatever, draw whatever misogynistic trash you want. but don't act super shocked when the world doesn't act like a hugbox and give you a gold star for being another gross dude drawing giant titties.
