Yeah, that's the challenge of it. I can definitely see the fun factor dropping though :( Maybe I'll switch to another kind of run before we start. Or maybe I won't. We'll see.

edit: Yeah, I went #regrand instead. Although all the options are good. Dammit it's hard to decide.

Sleep in the briefing room.
At your own peril.
Trust of the words of everyone who's done a Natural/Classic run (which includes drat near everyone in this thread): NATURAL RUNS ARE NOT FUN. They're really not even challenging in a good way. A good challenge is one that makes you think outside the box and make each choice, set-up, and action as efficiently as possible. Natural is a boring-rear end grindfest where the only challenge is gaining levels until your characters are tough enough to overcome their sharply limited skillset.

Quoting myself from a few pages back for an alternative to a pure natural run:

ultrafilter posted:

I had an idea last year for a mode that fits somewhere between a standard and a natural run, and I thought I'd toss it out in case anyone else wants to give it a try. The basic idea is that you roll your party according to Gilgabot, and each character gets access to two jobs. The first is whatever they'd get under a natural run, and the second is your choice among what you've been assigned. This makes the game a little tougher than if each character could use all four jobs, but it's not quite as tedious as a strict natural run would be.

I wonder how they'd pull something like that off, though. Anything beyond telling you what jobs you can use would require some sort of patch or cheats involved. That gets really complicated.

That's mostly a matter of opinion, too. I'm one of the few that actually likes the art style somewhat. Or maybe it's just that I like having a fresh look after having only ever played the PSX and GBA versions. Probably a bit of both.

I will willingly admit that they did a really lovely job on the area map tiles though. You can easily divider lines practically everywhere.

So you made Omega experience what it feels to lose all its' health at once and made Shinryu really loving mad and the Knight just took hits like a champ?

I dunno if recognizing how you beat them just by what you said your team was is good or bad.

I'm still not sure I'd stopped using a Gameshark last time I played. This might actually be my first legitimate run.

Coming back to the game after around a decade of absence, I'm still impressed with the spritework on the backgrounds. In fact, I'm going to do running commentary of my impressions coming back to the game. From start of game to parked near the Wind Temple:

Meteor crashes in glorious Mode7! That always struck me as a really janky way to do things, but I don't think they had any better options.

I'm still impressed by having Boko run in place a little to represent kicking dirt on the campfire. Really, they do a lot with a small number of unique sprites.

For Christ's sake Galuf, of all the things to have forgotten, I would not have expected your weapon to be one of them. Look, Jesus, it's taking two of you to kill a bat.

As mentioned, the backgrounds are really well-done. The pirate ship in particular. I think the only time I've seen spritework with that level of care recently was Bastion/Transistor.

I should probably not be buying weapons (And definitely not spells) until I know what I'll actually be able to use, but gently caress it, Galuf, you're getting a sword. Not like money's hard to come by in any case.

The bit where Bartz and Galuf get smitten by the sleeping Faris I can now recognize as being fairly typical of the Japanese approach to sexuality, but it's handled much better than Persona 4 (Or at least, the anime of it) handled the subject. Also, the music during that scene (I believe the official title is "What?") still reminds me of cheesy porno music.

Okay, I know I ground for levels on Bandrsntch before, but I seem to remember I can't take on three at once. *two OHKOs later* Yup, I was right.

Watch them all, since there's going to be a multistream on RPG Limit Break, but here's a rundown:

* HappySquid89 is the fastest of the four in any% at 4:05:16, roughly 9 minutes behind the WR. He's also been dueling for the glitchless Lufia II WR and practicing a lot with..
* Elmagus, who's roughly six minutes slower in any%. He has held some drat impressive times in the Lufia 2 Ancient Cave as well, which has some similarity to the Fiesta in terms of the lateral thinking you'll need to adapt to what an RNG decides you get. He's also one of the chillest streamers of the lot, in my opinion, second only to..
* Puwexil, who's roughly six minutes slower than that in any%. Puwexil is a vast font of Final Fantasy (and Chrono Trigger) knowledge, and currently holds the WR in FF6 any% glitchless. He's also got experience with Fiesta rules and The Run, having decisively won last year's Run against..
* Dragondarch, who is a bit of a speedrun dilettante. He holds a bunch of SDA records for games of varying amounts of quality, including the segmented Lufia II record. He's not terribly popular around these parts after his abysmal Run last year and his behavior during it, and by all accounts his strategy for this year seems no less bizarre, so he may be the optimal schadenfreude option.

I can confirm everything. The Ancient Cave hack is amazing, and it's a perfect application of FFV's mechanics. It forces you to think outside the box with the tools that you're given, and if there are potential synergies in your loadout, you either find them or you die. It's how I learned of the glory of the DANCE PUNCHER, when in a run I had Monk, Dancer, and a pair of Kaiser Knuckles by level 10. And if I remember right, that run STILL didn't win.

Except that the timer and general expectations in the endgame more or less require you to pick up really fast ways to get through random battles (like !iainuki) asap so that you can have the abilities needed for the last few boss floors.
