Not sure if it was posted, but Jeb Bush stepped on landmine #3 from his past yesterday:
http://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2016-election/jeb-bush-reminds-conservatives-he-stood-terri-schiavo-n378491

quote:

Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush invoked the controversial case of Terri Schiavo at a conservative conference in Washington, DC Friday morning, reminding the audience of his role in the case when he was governor of Florida.

"I stood on the side of Terri Schiavo," Bush said at the Faith and Freedom conference. Bush rarely brings up the Schiavo case on the campaign trail but his brief mention of it was made to a religious, conservative audience receptive to his role in the case.
He really is just gonna pretend there's nothing wrong with any of it, isn't he? Iraq, privatizing social security, Terri Schiavo, he's just gonna go right on without re-evaluating anything.

The Schiavo case isn't a 'landmine' for Jeb!. He's legitimately proud of that and will do well mentioning it in the primary. His opponents will agree that he did the right thing - especially Rick Santorum who was right there beside him the whole time. If you vote for a Republican, that's what you're voting for.

What about in the general, assuming he is the nominee? I am just wondering what your thoughts are on the Schiavo issue in that case.

He'll be asked about it and give the same answer he has in the past. Republican candidates are unequivocally pro-life. The people who passionately care about this issue are already baked-in partisans.

eh, it can only be a liability

on the one hand, you have "i care", and on the other hand, michael schiavo is still pissed off

It's a bit too nuanced of a story, I'd bet Jeb! is going to be fine in the general when asked and will probably look better now that it's been so long. Saying that you want to keep someone alive *just in case* sounds better to most people, unless they've dealt with a family member on life support and there aren't enough people in that segment to matter.

Yeah, it would be a huge liability for him if he started walking it back.

I seem to recall Obama saying that the vote he cast in the Senate on this matter was the biggest regret of his career--the one vote he wishes he could have back.

How close are we to a presidential election showdown between Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders in November 2016?

I give Jeb credit for taking what in my view is the proper stance regarding the Confederate flag being flown over statehouses etc. I suspect this will likely cost him significant votes in the primary:

quote:

My position on how to address the Confederate flag is clear," he said in a written statement. "In Florida we acted, moving the flag from the state grounds to a museum where it belonged. This is obviously a very sensitive time in South Carolina and our prayers are with the families, the AME church community and the entire state. Following a period of mourning there will rightly be a discussion among leaders in the state about how South Carolina should move forward, and I'm confident they will do the right thing."

Outright replace the Republican party with the Socialist party and have all elections from here on out be Democrats vs. Socialists.

If you think you're gonna get sympathy from the shark, well then, you won't.

And that, I think, was the handle—that sense of inevitable victory over the forces of Old and Evil. Not in any mean or military sense; we didn’t need that. Our energy would simply prevail. There was no point in fighting—on our side or theirs. We had all the momentum; we were riding the crest of a high and beautiful wave.

EDIT: no, but seriously; go ahead and vote for Bernie in the primary and push the conversation leftward. Just don't get mad when it doesn't move mountains.
