Have a potluck for someone who's going away on Friday. I want to bring something that can either handle being in a crockpot all day, or something cool and refreshing. Nothing Mexican, Italian, or Portuguese as those foods are already covered. Thoughts?

I am currently eating corn salad with merguez and it's delicious: kernels from 2 ears of corn, charred kernels from 2 ears of corn, sauteed with: 1 diced zucchini 3 diced serranos some cumin some cayenne deglaze with a little tequila toss the above in a bowl with 1/2 round of queso fresco, grated 1 large ripe tomato, diced 1 can black beans 1 large lime, juice of and I served that over some arugula with chopped up merguez from the farmers' market. I made it on Sunday and I made it today and it's delicious and I'll be making it again.

So, in that case, I suggest german potato salad held hot in crockpot(rabbit optional, but appropriate), or like, a cucumber-y mint-y, dill salad thingy with a white bals vin, honey, red bells, etc. Stick to crunchy veg, a tart/tangy/dill-y vin, maybe a rotini pasta salad? I dunno, its about that time of year I start making citrus-y refreshing pasta salads for the wife, with dill, cucumber, onion, parsley, carrot, etc.

These are very good suggestions! I especially like the idea of bringing cold noodles and watching all the old Italian ladies freaking out about it. Since I posted we got a request from someone to bring pulled pork, though, so maybe I can do that. Or maybe I can bring pulled pork and use it on banh mi? Hmmmm......

To be honest I like taking poo poo like bahn mi to potlucks because I ride a bike, it transports well, I can pick up awesome poo poo in Chinatown on the cheap (6 footlongs for $15), and everyone loves it.

Thoughts? my standard is a vietnamese slaw using papaya or cabbage, fish sauce, cilantro, sesame seeds, palm sugar, thai chili, lime. apparently no one ever makes this, but I eat it all the goddamn time.

therattle posted:How different is palm sugar to cane? I've never used it before. not that different really. cane sugar tastes more skewed toward molasses, with a subtle sour note. palm sugar isn't sour, and has a bit more of a depth to it, I'd say like a very faint complex coconut richness, but "coconut" is a stretch. more beguiling in any case. I use it a lot in SE asian curries and uncooked dressings where you might be able to actually taste it. In any case, plain sugar or light brown sugar (or a mix of the two) are perfectly acceptable substitutes.

If you're over in bethpage that way and want hella seafood, Popeis is the place. Expecting Lobster is my JAM. Sorry I can't help you any more on the east end, I rarely went out that way. But go to the rattiest oldest looking place you can find with the beatest up old cars. The few old time locals that the yups havn't driven out won't point you wrong. https://www.popeisbethpage.com

ahahah, yeah I've been to popei's before. Their pile-of-beige fried fish platter is the poo poo. It's like the size of manhattan. Ended up going to "The Dock" for crab, Gosman's Fish Market for some oysters. owned hella hard. Would do again.

Their specials can comfortably feed a family of four if you have kids. That and a bowl of soup each and sodas, and you get out of the best fish fry in the most expensive county in the US for about 70bux. Not bad.

But mostly we've been eating 3 or 4 melons a week since they're in season and good right now. Crenshaws, Casabas, Canaries, etc.
