This Deus Ex book is decently good so far. I like this one and the Bioshock book as far as books go.

This is the nuclear option, yes, but Apple stopped supporting Windows 7 on the new laptops and so I'm trying to avoid having to purchase Windows 8 if at all possible.

Oh, it's just wineskin. The wrapper contains the entire standard Windows install directory, all you gotta do is open it up and put the mod files in as normal. Right click the wrapper, select "show package contents", and then open up "drive_c" (or something like that). That'll get you into wineskin's fake windows directory, and you'll be able to find the deus ex files inside there, probably in the GoG Games folder.

Could you tell me how to get the actual new vision or fixer .exe file to work on OSX? They did not come with a wrapper so I'm not sure I will be able to just click and drag unless there is some way to see inside the .exe itself.

If you throw a corpse at them, it can distract them for a moment. Otherwise, shotguns work well or those grenades in the assault rifle will make short work of them.

And I beat it. I get why this game was so mindblowing at the time, it still holds up. I chose the Helios ending because it felt the closest to "gently caress all of you" ending.

New Vision you can manually install, the .exe is just a convenience thing. It's just a matter of putting the right files in the right places. For the fixer .exe, you should be okay just replacing the old .exe with the new one. If that doesn't take, get Wineskin and edit the wrapper to point to the new .exe. I'm afraid I can't give you a step-by-step, as I don't have a Mac handy to experiment with.

I've been working on a long overdue update to Biomod for the past few days, but I just don't have the time to test it extensively. If you like to live dangerously, you can try out the beta here. Please let me know if anything weird happens. I forgot to mention it in the changelog, but I also made it so the Dragon's Tooth reverts to doing 100 damage per hit if you turn cheats on, similar to how Shifter handles other exploits.

Edit: I should probably just post the changelog here, shouldn't I.
code:
Biomod 1.1 Changelog

Beta 3
-Added protection from 10mmEX to ballistic vests and protection from the 'Burned' damage type to the hazmat suit
-Fixed toilet flushing exp bonus still being awarded when Shifter's skill system was turned off

Beta 2
-Improved autosave system to be less invasive and added an additional sanity check
-Significantly reduced the delay
-Updated readme

Beta 1
-Updated Shifter version to Shifter 1.9 RC1
-Jump height is not reduced when Athletics is untrained anymore
-Reverted Shifter change that gave Anna a pistol with explosive ammo, which was causing a very unfortunate issue in a certain pivotal scene
-Fixed crash on autosave
-Made autosave more generic (should work on custom levels now)
-Added autosave option to the controls menu (by DX_Blaster)
-Allowed Shifter's skill system to be toggled with the variable bNewSkillSystem
-Fixed bots rewarding XP when disabled if Shifter's skill system is turned off
-Changed EMP Discharge from passive to automatic (uses 10 energy per hit)
-Items can now be dropped by dragging them out of the inventory window
-Improved Shifter's cigarette smoke behavior (no longer causes NPCs to go hostile; only induces a cough instead of the 15 second long teargas animation)
-Enabled cancellation of the mantle state by letting go of the jump button
-Enabling cheats will now cause the dragon's tooth to revert to doing 100 damage rather than 20x5

One thing I always loved about DX is how the sound of gunfire doesn't travel very far but bullet impacts do, and they chose a weird sound effect. Dudes out there letting it rip with their assault rifles and it sounds like gentle rainfall on a tiled roof.
:eng101: That's actually the sound of the chunks of wall from the bullet impacts hitting the ground afterwards. It's supposed to have the typical James Bond style ricochet effects you hear in every other game, but they don't play in vanilla due to a bug.

Yes, there is Deus Ex 2.0

KillHour posted:

Yes. There's also an "armor ricochet" sound that was supposed to play when shooting targets that are resistant to bullets such as bots, cameras and turrets. You also may or may not have noticed that the crossbow doesn't play its intended firing sound and in fact sounds exactly the same as a silenced pistol due to a bug, which is also fixed in Biomod (and Shifter as well I think).

It's the kind of thing that you might not actively notice, as it's just the generic sounds that you would expect to hear when firing a gun at a wall in a video game, but after spending some time playing the game with them on, their absence is very jarring. I think it ends up making the game feel a lot more polished in practice. I know some people find it endearing, but as Basic Chunnel alluded to, the combination of very quiet firing sounds (especially the assault rifle) and no audio feedback from bullet impacts whatsoever is some incredibly janky poo poo.

I know it's not DX's fault but for me one of the most annoying pieces of sound design in the game is the alarm sound that they use, because it's such a common stock sound effect that it pops up in movies and TV shows all the time.
