So I'm heading to Vegas on a business trip for around 4-5 nights this fall, being put up in the Cosmopolitan by work. I'll probably only have one or two evenings "free" outside of planned work activites, and aside from hitting up the Chipotle across the street (I'm an expat American, this will be my first time back in the States in over two years, don't judge), I guess I'll spend my time gaming. Now I didn't pick the Cosmopolitan, and if I were a tourist it'd be out of my price range anyway, so am I going to be screwed with high stakes at their casino? Would I be better off walking across to Planet Hollywood or the Bellagio?

My gaming would only be casual and probably restricted to craps & blackjack.

Right next to a Chipotle (maybe not there one you mentioned, this one is just North of Harras) is the Casino Royale place already mentioned. If the posted table limits are higher than you like when you go through Cosmo (they might not be) you can try there. You can also take the Deuce (a public bus) from the strip to downtown and have a lot of selection for lower limit games. Maybe a cab back if it's late and you don't want to wait for the bus again.

So I'm heading to Vegas for the first time on the 13th, and my friends are looking to go to Encore Beach Club on that Sunday. Our group is roughly 50/50 guys and girls, is our best bet just to get advance tickets online or is there a smarter way to do this?

The smarter way is buy a cabana or table. If that's not in your budget then yes, advanced tickets are the best

*Staying downtown was amazingly fun, as always -- got upgraded at the Four Queens with $20 to their idea of a "suite" but it was on the top floor, quiet, and better than the rooms I've had before downtown, so A+. FQ guests were able to use the rooftop pool at Binion's across the street, which is something of a hidden gem -- there was NOBODY else using it the two days we did, and the view from the 25th floor rooftop was pretty awesome! If the "resort" style pools aren't your thing and you just want a place to get some sun, look out on the mountains, etc, this is the place.

For gambling, I didn't lay a single bet on the strip -- OK, not true, I played a roulette machine at the Mirage to get free drinks. But downtown, I played the $5 double deck blackjack at the El Cortez two nights in a row, won some money. $5 late night Pai Gow @ Binion's -- played a $12 poker tournament at the electronic tables at the Plaza on Tuesday, which was fun, but I didn't see the appeal. Glad I got to try them though. My biggest mistake was playing Mississippi Stud in a drunken stupor. You can win a lot of money quickly at that game, but holy poo poo can you lose it quickly too.

<-- love the EC

The Cirque LOVE show at the Mirage was really cool -- probably the most multi-media of the Cirque shows I've seen, and that's not a bad thing. Had a great time at the Revolution Lounge before the show and at the Mirage buffet earlier in the night. Next trip is Absinthe for sure, based on what everyone here is saying.

The Mandalay Bay shark reef is a great exhibit for any non-gamblers who find themselves in Vegas:

and the Neon Boneyard was REALLY cool. Our tour guide was enthusiastic as hell and provided really fun context and history of a lot of the old signs and old Vegas:

Only thing to do at the end of the trip was collect my winnings. I think I broke Vegas:

Great trip report. Downtown is the best :hfive:

I'm taking my wife to Absinthe next month, does anybody have any seating suggestions? I've seen a lot of complaints about the uncomfortable, close together seating on the floor, but we can still get 4th row aisle seats. Otherwise, I've seen that several recommend the tables in the back for the best experience. FWIW, my wife is about 5'6". Thanks!

The floor seats are loving ridiculous. Unless you're a wood sprite, or a pixie, you'll be crowded and uncomfortable. Sit in the cut-open bathtubs up on the riser that runs around the performance area.

Your plan is good. I'd also consider staying at Wynn or Encore if I were you. Bartolotta is a fantastic meal, I'm heading there tonight. Twist at Mandarin is great so if you're staying there go there. Absinthe is the best show in Vegas, MJ is the 2nd best. Rose.Rabbit is meh, if you go to the Cosmo to eat, eat at Scarpetta or Blue Ribbon.

Thanks for the advice, everyone. Please critique my itinerary for a Saturday-Wednesday stay at the Mandarin in August

Saturday: Arrive at 10:30. Foot massages at around 3. Dinner at Twist at 6.
Sunday: Brunch at Mozen at 2:30. Absinthe at 8. Dinner at Seersucker at 10:30.
Monday: Massage for the lady, cheap gambling for me. Meet up later for dinner or walking around buying shoes or something.
Tuesday: Cabana rental at Mandarin (minimum spend/no fee during week), Dinner at Bartolotta at 7:45.
Wednesday: Flight leaves at noon.

If anyone has some advice as to whether I can find a $5 minimum 3:2 blackjack table on a monday morning/afternoon, I'm all ears. I'm definitely not opposed to going downtown, actually I might actually prefer it. Also, would love to hear suggestions for places to dine without a reservation on a Monday night. Obviously feel free to tell me that any of my plans suck.

Thanks, again, for the help!

The floor seats kinda suck but if you can get a table, the tables are the best. The closer you are to the stage increases your chance for interaction with the performers which may or may not be a bonus.

Searsucker is MEH. You can do much better at Caesar's, Rao's is great for Italian, Nobu, or Old Homestead are all good places to eat. Mesa Grill isn't half bad and Gordon Ramsay is on par with Searsucker IMO. You'll also have to deal with the nightclub crowd at Caesar's as Omnia is open Sunday. Honestly, I'd walk from Absinthe over to Bellagio and hit Picasso, Yellowtail, Olives or Le Cirque.

Everything else looks good. You might find a cheap casino on or just off strip like Ellis Island or something but downtown should have blackjack and Downtown is kinda cool to walk around.

How awful is the SDX bus?

I'm going on a trip in July for a business purposes (but on my own dime) but might have some free time to gently caress around downtown for a little bit.

If the SDX is poo poo then getting a rental car becomes cheaper than taking a taxi (though I wouldn't be able to party as much).

It's not a "vacation" so I'm being a little frugal but not extremely so (I'm staying at Vdara instead of Monte Carlo where the conference is).

I primarily took buses last time I was in Vegas because I was going back and forth between Downtown and the Strip multiple times a day and didn't want to drop an extra 100 bucks a day on cab fare. The SDX and Deuce were pretty good and always on time. Deuce is 24 hours a day and more frequent, but I think the SDX stops around midnight. Definitely worth 6 bucks a day for unlimited trips. You can buy 3 day passes for 20 bucks at various stops and at the airport. I'm definitely getting a bus pass when I go back in October.

A rental car is $15 a day. It takes 10-15mins to get downtown from your hotel. The bus is $6 a day? (more or less, I wouldn't know) but will take you at least an hour each way. So...What's your time worth?

Boola
Dec 7, 2005
That's how I viewed it on my recent trip. I knew I wanted to go downtown once or twice to get a change of pace from the strip. A rental car isn't going to be much more than the bus pass per day or actually less if you have anyone with you. I was then also able to go to Red Rocks Canyon, Lotus of Siam, Goyemon Sushi, and Pinball Hall of Fame. I probably wouldn't have gone to any of those without a rental car and enjoyed them all quite a bit.

There is something to be said for not getting a rental if you're planning on nonstop drinking or just don't want to drive, but I'd probably just opt for cabs in that case. I hate wasting a hour of time that I could be doing something else, but it's all up to your own cost/benefit analysis of course.

For the person asking about 3:2 5 dollar blackjack: my recent experience is that this doesn't exist on the strip. Maybe off strip it does. Downtown it definitely does. Main Street Station I liked quite a bit for that, and then a few of the Freemont St casinos will have it going.

There's also a brewery on Freemont that's fairly new and surprised me quite a bit if anyone going to Vegas is into beer. It's called Banger Brewing. I'm kind of picky with craft beer and get tired of the 1000's of places that will put out your standard average lagers, stouts, ipas, etc. They had some unique brews going that were pretty delicious. Super friendly bartenders too.

The Freakin Frog is the best place for beer and or whiskey/scotch in Vegas for future reference. 400+ beers and 300+ whiskey/scotch. Sometimes you can ask for poo poo that they have that's so awesome it's not in their computer system, like when I got the Jameson Vintage Special Reserve for $18 a shot instead of $90 because they forgot to price it right.

Just wanted to say that JaySB's site is great! Got a good deal on a room at the MGM Grand for my conference at the Tropicana a few weeks back, and it gave me more money for having fun. Thank you!

Also, for the Absinthe question, the regular floor seats definitely suck. They are small wooden chairs packed in so that they're touching. If your shoulders are wider than ~14in, you, and/or the people next to you will be incredibly uncomfortable. The show itself is amazing, and you should definitely try to get seats in hopes of audience participation.

Hey Jay, can you hook up deals for gamblers too, or am I probably going to do the best through casino marketing? I'm basically at the point where I can get free rooms (but not food+beverage beyond coupons) from any casino that knows me, as long as its not fight weekend or something like that.

I can get you setup with a good casino host at a casino you don't already go to, otherwise I wouldn't want to step on toes and theres a whole bunch of annoying hoops you have to jump through with that anyways.

Hey JaySB, I'm thinking about spending one or two nights in Vegas in August and the wife and I have already been through Lotus of Siam. What other sorts of interesting restaurants might you recommend with that kind of quality and price range? I'm thinking about "short of a Michelin star" but not "Cheesecake Factory" either. Basically, food that is of good quality, unique to the area, but not a $100 a head kind of place either. $40-$60 a head would be reasonable.

Also I would stop and have a proper visit and bring the "musical instrument" cases and visit but it's only two nights and we're stopping in CALIFORNIA on the way.

Raku and Yonaka are worth a visit, Musashi is great as well. For truly good food that's reasonable you'll have to go off strip. Any place that I'd recommend on strip is gonna be upwards of $100pp. There's some great Korean BBQ here, Hot N Juicy Crawfish is delicious and cheap but not exactly white table cloth. Further off strip Sen Of Japan is awesome. Mundo in the World Market Center is upper echelon Mexican food that is worth the price tag, should be close to $60pp.

Nope, this will be the first time. Prefer Friday night, since I don't know if my Grand Canyon tour will give us enough time on Thursday (says it will be back to the hotel around 9pm and most likely tired anyways). It's 3-4 of us. 1 guy, 2-3 girls. I can go as high as $1500 but I prefer to keep it around $1000. Don't have a particular venue. More on the EDM side. Thanks!

Get it crazy spicy and order enough to get a bunch of corn/potatoes/sausage in the mix. Lots of beer.
