Was anyone else thrown off by the excessive use of tension hooks and tension music during the driving parts, where it felt like not that much honest tension was building? It was making me laugh because I really just did not feel a lot of tension building up at all.. but the music is telling me it should be, and it comes off almost like a parody.

Yeah I felt like they were trying to ape Fukunaga's directing style from the first season but since it wasn't pitch perfect it fell pretty flat at a couple points. There were a couple moments that crossed over from cinematic to cheesy. Hoping they can tighten things up a bit now that some of the backstory is in.

This first episode didnt catch me the way season 1's did. Its attempt at a dark, brooding atmosphere was almost laughably overdone at times, with the dark ambient style soundtrack brooding on and on seemingly without end. I feel it all started at the wrong end. Previous season opened with the main plotpoint; a grizzly murder scene with a creepy vibe, and early on established the main characters. Now that was turned on its head, only establishing the plotpoint at the end of a really long and confusing character presentation.

But I guess I'll give it a chance, if not only to see how these four almost noir parody characters will interact with each other.

Don't know for sure but I haven't heard anything about them being involved, I'd be pretty shocked if they had any input besides an obligatory producer credit

An alright dude.
I liked it, I mean it's very different but still has the weirdness with it. Crazy loving books, Eagle Masks, etc.. I mean there are at least 4 featured characters that they have to go through. I think it's good so far introducing the characters etc..

BTW , Season 1 Episode 1 was the exact same way.

They do. It is a big way for pro-amateurs to make money after their stint in "amateur castings" is over. Porn stars are a thing of the past now since no one pays for porn.

The rail stuff will definitely turn out to be connected to everything else.

Oh yeah I'm sure it will, it just felt out of place in this episode.

Also while the occult stuff is obviously not as overt this time around, there was an underlying surrealness that was definitely in line with the first season. That whole weird sex apartment with the loving skeleton saint and tiny milk woman, the eagle mask, the burned out eyes, great stuff. I mean the characters are definitely not as immediately likeable, but I don't think this is in any way a massive tonal or stylistic departure from the first season.

This was alright. I liked Season 1 because it was based in the past and blended ridiculous paranoia and paranormal with realistic stuff. Hopefully this does the same.

Just because Liquor's dead, doesn't mean you can just roll this bitch all over town with "The Freedoms."
Vince Vaughan has never seemed like a good fit in comedy movies since there's nothing naturally funny about the way he behaves. This episode demonstrated that he's not very good in normal roles either.

Still going to watch the rest of the season even if just about everyone is boring or unlikeable so far. S1 took a while to pick up, I'll give S2 until at least episode four to start getting interesting.

It's pretty dope.
The first season had tons of crime fiction cliches but I still liked it. I like this season as well. Farrel's character is so deliciously sleazy and nasty that I have to watch if only to see what he does next.

I remember Vaughn's unsuccessful push as a dramatic actor in the late 90's/early 00's and wonder why they cast him in this. He had plenty of chances as a dramatic actor.

I liked that they were drinking Johnnie Walker Blue in the bar. It's what Roy Cady, the protagonist of Pizzolatto's novel Galveston, is always drinking.

A little dull and muddled and occasionally slightly too overwrought, as though someone were doing a True Detective pastiche/parody. I have to agree that none of the characters are particularly likeable as yet, although I have a soft spot for Vince Vaughn. He's trying so hard! :allears:

The missing maid sister will almost certainly come back in some significant way, and the bird mask-thing makes me think of tales of Bohemian Grove, the cult-esque retreat in CA where has an owl as its symbol (as well as a 40-foot statue of said bird).

I'm talking about the little bird statue that was in the passenger seat (I think?) of the car with the dead guy. It would kind of fit because of the other little references to Los Angeles noir stories.

That's the thing isn't it? He's a small-time crook trying to appear to be a Serious Businessman. Of course he's uncomfortable and unconvincing.

I do have concerns how much range he has for his role though.

Given the scene with his first interaction with Farrel's character, I figured we were meant to believe that he done enough in the interim to climb from small-time hood to not-so-legit player.

It was interesting to note that not all of the attendees at the dinner felt he'd reached that level of credibility yet.

In a show chalk full of powerfully shot imagery, what stood out the most in this episode was when Woodrough turned off his headlamp and cruised down the highway. The black silhouette of trees rushing by under a starry sky.

Chilling stuff, and it gives me hope in this season.
