Where have you been? The GOP is nothing but knives at this point. Boehner can't even count on his loving whip to vote with him, and people have been poo poo-talking Jeb Bush since he started his run. There's a massive faction war on now that the base is realizing they can elect true-believer candidates directly rather than having lip-service candidates chosen for them in back room deals.

People complain the GOP is not willing to negotiate with Democrats, but there's nobody in the GOP who can speak for the GOP solidly enough to be able to negotiate. They can't even agree on policy positions among themselves, and even the factions have factions within them.

I would advise against counting the GOP's chickens just yet. Early polling is largely meaningless and the odds that the establishment hack gets the nomination are still good. Remember that the 2012 primary had like 5 different "frontrunners" polling wise before settling on Mitt.

republicans have a lot of money and will use that money to win local elections and prevent democrats from doing things just like theyve been doing for a while

until gerrymandering is addressed, the republicans can still pretty much deadlock and drag democrats down with them.

Bad news; the Supreme Court is likely to strike down independent redistricting committees this week as unconstitutional, so gerrymandering will get worse, and the most effective tool for fighting it will probably get worse.

Several, like Rubio and Walker, gave milquetoast support to it, saying it's a state's right issue.

It seems like after the manifesto came out those candidates that have responded have changed their position and support Haley's call for removal of the flag, including Walker.

I wasn't saying the primary process would necessarily produce a wingnut candidate or that the GOP is done for. I was mostly talking about what has been going on with congressional elections. The GOP can change and stay together if the political conversation changes. The issues that dominate political conversation right now are ones that divide the GOP, but if there were other new issues the GOP could come together over in the future then the GOP could be a real national party again.

Also, just because the result of the primary process can still be an "establishment" candidate doesn't mean that the factions had no say on the road to getting to that result. What position was Mitt in when he finished winning the primary? Would you say the primary process had a good impact on his general election campaign?

This is true for the Dem side too. Bernie Sanders wouldn't be running if party factions had no impact on the general election candidate.

Yes, but Mitt had to wade through a veritable forest of knives to get it, and by the time he got out the other side he was already dying of a thousand right-wing position cuts.

quote:

"I keep hearing people saying we need more conversations about race. Actually we don’t need more conversations. What we need is conversions [to Jesus] because the reconciliations that changes people is not a racial reconciliation, it’s a spiritual reconciliation when people are reconciled to God. When I love God and I know that God created other people regardless of their color as much as he made me, I don’t have a problem with racism. It’s solved!" - Mike Huckabee, speaking on Fox News.

Clinton looking in pretty good shape.

NBC/WSJ poll posted:

What's more, 92 percent of Democratic voters say they could see themselves supporting Clinton for the Democratic nomination, which is up six points since March. Just eight percent can't see themselves backing her in the current poll, which was conducted right after Clinton formally kicked off her presidential campaign with a rally in New York City. (By contrast, former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush's score among Republicans is 75-22 percent and Sen. Marco Rubio's, R-Fla., is 74-15 percent.)

Obviously this would be absurd but for fun I did some absurd math to go with this rate. Assuming Trump gave a poo poo about the popular election (and every american voted) in order to get roughly half of the country Trump would need to spend 3,750,000,000$

The issue though is that even though they're bickering and fighting among themselves whatever candidate comes out ahead (eventually one of them will) is going to get all the R votes by default. Doesn't matter how much the Tea Party screeches about getting given a RINO they're going to vote for him anyway because we need to prevent that old witch from getting into office at all costs.

You can cut that in two, since about half the country doesn't vote,. The smart money would be only paying 51% of the people who vote in enough states to win the electoral college, which is likely even smaller.

So to continue to be incredibly hefty with our estimates I will peg the vote at a conservative 2 Billion or less. Assuming 25 dollars is a sufficient motivator for the average person.
