Yay rodents :3: Jerboas are the smallest rodents while capys are the biggest ones.

Fourth biggest are maras, which are cavies like capybaras and guinea pigs. Some Japanese zoos keep maras with the capys and they get along well. They used to be classified as hares until they were examined more closely.

Maras and Capies started from the same creature but Maras adapted to living on the open plains and Capies adapted to living in the rivers and wetlands.

You may be thinking of hedgehogs, which in spite of their similarity to porcupines are not rodents.

Yeah, and fossil evidence shows that the cavy ancestor was significantly bigger than even the capybara:

I've just been to a local zoo, and for some reason all the animals seemed super derpy, so I threw some of the footage I took into a quick video. It includes a derpy tabby catte (sort of).

A few years back I did a Let's Play of an RPG and ran into an enemy called a Mara. I thought the name was a reference to a character or something (because it was capitalized) and I had no idea what it meant until today. Thanks, cute picture thread! You're heartwarming and educational! :3:

Mara is also a demon in Buddhist mythology, so it could be a combinational reference which is why the fellow in that game looks like a demonic rodent.

As for the rodent mara, I'm not sure what its etymology is but I would guess that that like capybara it's an indigenous word rather than a reference to Buddhism. Or maybe it is, who knows, there are weirder names out there.

Edit: Shin Megami Tensei's version of the demon Mara is hilarious but also not work safe

Edit 2: More maras: http://www.zooborns.com/zooborns/mara/
