Santorum was always a weak candidate, but he holds some appeal for religious voters. Now that space is getting occupied by Jindal, Perry, Cruz, and especially Huckabee. Santorum's been trying to triangulate and grab some support for more far-right positions, like his newfound passion for the flat-tax he derided in 2011, but nobody's really buying it. Still, I'm surprised he doesn't have at least a little more support carrying over from 2012. He won the Iowa caucus after all, and you'd think some of the people who voted for him the first time would want to justify their first vote by voting for him again.

In reality this is probably some form of currying favor with the Clinton camp. Bernie's numbers are getting to the "really can't ignore me" levels, and she was already bit in the rear end by doing similar in 2008. Anyone willing to take him down a peg is probably getting a christmas card at the least.

What if the election ended up being Sanders v. Trump? This is an idea based entirely on drunken fever dreams, but I feel like we're in the stage of these proceedings where we can just entertain a silly, fun idea. I can think of few pairings more diametrically opposed. The debates could end in a knife fight.
