Americans have a really hard time separating the idea of marriage, the religious institution, from marriage, the governmentally recognized contract.

Obama is speaking in front of a gold-fringed flag, so gay marriage is actually only legal if you're married on a boat, just FYI.

Why do we even require a ceremony? Go to the courthouse, do the appropriate paperwork, get it signed off on by a judge and be done. If you want a religious ceremony that is on you to go get done separately.

We've never required a ceremony. That's just something that people do because they feel they aren't actually "married" in the eyes of god or their family and friends unless they do.

That's what I did and the state didn't question my total lack of religious tradition and fanfare. It was weird. I wonder why they didn't ban my marriage..... It couldn't have purely been spite directed towards gay people, so I'm at a loss.

Having just gone through the process: No ceremony is required to be married, just that the license get signed and mailed in by someone who is recognized by the state to perform the marriage. A civil servant will just sign it (they can also do a ceremony if you want one,) but other religious officiants may require a ceremony before they sign it themselves.

spacetoaster posted:Where are you? When I got married at the courthouse the judge literally did a ceremony out of the bible. Nah, the judge doesn't have to do that. You don't even need a judge to my knowledge, just someone empowered to sign those docs. I only know the law in CA because I've never needed to look it up, but when my parents got married they just went down to the county courthouse and got the form filled out, they didn't have any kind of religious ceremony.
