Both thinks of themselves as the oppressed underdogs and both are using Saul Alinskies rules for radicals against each other in smear campaigns and dragging each other through the dirt. Wages decrease while corporate profits increase? Meh. Exploitation of the desperation of people looking for jobs and slashing pay to ridiculous levels (or simply sending them overseas to increase profits even more with less worker protections)? Eh. I wasn't expecting such a downer when opening this thread today, but the reminder that such a bold and powerful display of what can be done by a minority populace when it bands together and fights through multiple means without regard for being "the perfect darkie" has been revised and taught to multiple generations of our country that it was all down to one Magic Negro and his sacrificial racism healing powers, is incredibly depressing. MLK was great, Malcolm X was great, The Black Panthers were great, those who were willing to stand with them at the risk of loss of social standing with their fellow whites were great. Socialists who argued both for equal rights and improvement of southern conditions were great. Don't devolve such a cornerstone of american history down to "one man was nice and inoffensive enough to Win Equality". We wouldn't be where we are without any of them, they all deserve respect.

Yeah, very true. You really did have various groups coming together to fight for Civil Rights. People forget that 3 civil rights workers were murdered in Mississippi fighting for equality, two of them were white. Its the whole influence for 'Mississippi Burning'. And there were others too, black and white who died to secure Civil Rights. Here's a list for anyone who is curious: http://www.splcenter.org/civil-rights-memorial/civil-rights-martyrs The problem is in American History classes, we avoid the bloody parts of history ('Lies My Teacher Told Me' is incredible). We focus so much on early America, we don't have time to delve into the modern era. Sad.

I'm all the way back on page 126, and this thread moves so fast it seems like everything is irrelevant before it's replied to anyway. I just want to say the whole "about gaming journalism" angle was turned into a straw man. That phrase is used more to mockingly detract people from GG than to represent GG anymore. There is a journalism angle to it, but it's not exclusively about journalism. It's probably more about social media, and about the indie PC developer community, and where 'journalism' comes in is that these writers often talk and hang out with these developers because, well, they're the only ones left who will. Call of Duty has more advertising people than a typical Presidential campaign, and will talk to you when they want to. Sony is pretty similar. Anyone who actual really influences things at Nintendo usually has a poor grasp of English. Indie PC developers will give interviews, guest host on your podcast, etc. I've talked about this already, about how sites have to keep people coming back and the underground PC game scene will give you much more exclusive information about their pixel-platformer than EA will their games. Around 2008, Twitter really took off. People who write reviews/previews/interviews and host podcasts for the most well known game sites were not immune to signing up for Twitter. Between Twitter and podcasts, a lot of elements about the industry of writing about games is now discussed in a casually open format. That includes NDAs, who can phone up whom for a question, etc. This stuff always existed, and if pressed somebody might say that yes they are embargoed from reviewing a game until after you have had a chance to buy it, but in the days before social media the workings of these offices were generally out of view. What has also happened because of social media is that you're witness to these people's political opinions. And people that read their work who don't agree with them on non-policy matters like feminist theory feel betrayed. Many writers just refuse to make any comments about this, many who do will say that Personal Harassment Is Bad. But a number of people have leaned in, become even closer to these ideologue developers, and just leads to further fracturing about "who you can trust." Retired TV host Adam Sessler doesn't just think harassment is bad, he hung out with Quinn while she went undercover in an 8chan chat room trying to harass her or whatever, and boasted about it. And consequently a lot of people who either don't like Quinn or don't care about this whole thing unfollow the guy they used to watch on TV for many years because he's also now also boosting for radical feminism. (It goes the other way, too. Some guy who works/ed for IGN has the handle NoTaxation and posts Tea Party rants, and that also lowered a lot of peoples's opinion for what he has to say about games and other things.) I think everyone will eventually survive. Film criticism survived, everybody knew Roger Ebert was a liberal but angry conservatives didn't ruin the entire profession for everyone because of it. It was just a lot easier when we didn't have any lines of communication with people who work at game blogs when they were off the clock.
