I watched Beau Travail a few days ago and was blown away. There's something about exilic or diasporic cinema which really gets to me. Anyone have a recommendation for a good Denis follow-up or other films in a similar vein?

Not a diasporic movie, but Denis' Trouble Every Day is great.

What are some edgy, cool films that star women? I'm thinking along the lines of Ghost World and Young Adult. Looking particularly for stuff you might consider alternative or cult classics.

Because stuff I actually want to watch on DVD has been scant this year, I wrote a review of Beau Travail last week. This week I plan on hitting Trouble Every Day and White Material. I started with Trouble Every Day. Not sure what I was expecting, certainly - just to use comparative shorthand - not a blend of Exotica and Antichrist. I love those two movies and, while I need more time for Trouble Every Day to settle, it feels like a wholly appropriate exhalation after Beau Travail. Great stuff.

I'll probably do a poor job of explaining what I'm looking for, but I'll give it a shot. Lost Boys is kind of a fun and silly 80s vampire movie, but when I saw it when it came out I was 13 and it seemed kind of dark, sexy, and mysterious -- at least through the first half. And the soundtrack certainly contributed to that. Are there any supernatural type movies (not necessarily vampire, but ideally in some sorta similar genre) that will give grown-up me the same sense of sexy / compelling / mysteriousness that my 13 year old self got from Lost Boys? Prefer something that's not gritty edgy grimdark but also not the cartoony "sexiness" of Poison Ivy in Batman and Robin. Maybe something that hews close to the feel of the book version of Interview with the Vampire?

I only watched about 30 minutes of it on a plane once, but I thought it was a fun 30 minutes. It might be a little light for what you're looking for though. You might like Only Lovers Left Alive, though it's kinda like a vampire movie had a baby with The Cure. Underworld is pretty stylized but it also might fit the bill.

I'm looking for more movies with a lot of in-character narration. As in the character is the narrator talking about what they are thinking stream of consciousness style or whatever, and not a third party omniscient narrator talking directly to the viewer. The best example I can think of is Revolver with Jason Statham. I really like that he is basically a crazy person and it's all cerebral and weird, but I'd settle for something more normal. The TV show Peep Show relies on this heavily, in a normal not-crazy fashion as an example of that.

Goodfellas doesn't have a ton of it but it does have some and its pretty well done. Casino does too and has fun with the idea. (Joe Pesci gets cut out mid narration when his character dies) Fight Club and Eternal Sunshine are also pretty strong examples. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang does too I think. A Clockwork Orange does definitely, and maybe Shutter Island? Can't remember. Lots of mindfuck movies do it (my favorite genre) because it helps you get stuck in the headspace of the character and not know whats real or not. For something non-mindfucky, how about Forrest Gump? Ooh, and Sin City. Each chapter is self-narrated in a very stream of consciousness style.

Killer Inside Me uses a narrator, I haven't seen it but if it's half-way faithful to the book it's immensely hosed up and insane.

Yeah, I remember I first saw this in like high school on cable, probably comedy central, and thought it was alright because Jack Black was kinda funny ranting about bands and poo poo. But then I saw it again just a year or two ago and I was like "holy poo poo John Cusack, you are an abusive shithead. You kinda deserve to be alone."

That bit with his second big break-up, where his ex reveals his rejection left her emotionally scarred and sexually dysfunctional for years and his only response was "she's right, I broke with her, that's another one I don't have to worry about." was just so darkly hilarious.

I mean, I could be wrong, but I always saw the film as his character representing the worst qualities inside of all of us in a relationship, and the whole thing is about the catharsis that comes with working on yourself and attempting to expunge those qualities from your personality. Each of his past relationships represents a different shithead way people gently caress up relationships. Is his character a great guy by the end of the film? No. But is he attempting to work toward it? Absolutely. But yeah, he also fails to learn some important things along the way. Just like people tend to do. feedmyleg fucked around with this message at 18:33 on Jun 30, 2015 |
