Can I post an anti-rant here? I was talking to this younger guy (23 maybe?) that works for me the other day about motorcycles. He told me he wanted to get one and get into it, so I gave him my standard "Do the MSF course first, budget enough for gear, and get a reasonable bike that won't kill you on insurance first" speech. The guy is pretty bro-tastic, even more so by virtue of being in Colorado. Like, sun's out, guns out, flatbrim Dakine hat party boy. I told him about how insane the prices are to insure anything an insurance company considered a sportbike, because I figured he would want a 600RR or something. To that he says, "Well yeah, look at the kind of people that ride those."

Those drivers are so much better than what I'm dealing with here. What I left out of my post is that I had encountered four other trucks crossing the DY on blind curves on that same road. The one that honked back and was looking for a fight was the only one of note. It's seriously loving bad down here. I'd say on a given five-mile stretch of road, I'll encounter 3-5 pickups crossing well into the oncoming lane on blind curves. I dont. loving. Get it. I own a truck. It's really loving easy to drive. The overboosted power steering makes it extremely easy to navigate turns. I don't understand loving hillbillies they seem to love trucks but yet are completely incapable of even the most rudimentary driving skills.

Several years ago when we both worked for my dad, he and I were in one of our glass trucks coming back from the foothills. He was driving way to fast, and drifting into the oncoming lane on blind corners all the way back. Super lucky we didn't get into a head on. When I told my dad and (idiot) step-mom when we got back, her excuse was "Oh, he know's the roads up there". My response was "So that allows him to see through solid rock then?"

I think the mindset comes from unpaved/single lane country roads these hicks are used to where you drive 15mph and move farrrrr over when an oncoming car comes by to squeeze past. These rules do not loving apply to 45mph two-lane roads.
|
# ? Jul 1, 2015 17:53 |

I see plenty of people crossing into the oncoming lane for every kind of curve and I've concluded they must be ruled by fear. I don't know why they even get in a car if they think that they'll fly off the road at the slightest turn of the wheel, but they do, and they like to occupy 25% of the opposite lane because ramming other cars is safer than knowing how to drive in the first place. On the road from my house into town, when I'm in my car, I like to set cruise control to 25mph because that's the posted speed limit. Every kind of dipshitmobile from lifted Rams to Avalons with the gold emblem option like to climb halfway up my rear end on the straight portions of the road, because even though sightlines are heavily obstructed by vegetation and both sides of the road are densely populated by homes where children live, they want to do 40. The instant a curve presents itself I see them fall well back. I touch no pedals because my car is maintaining an appropriate speed because that's what I drat well set it to do, and I don't come anywhere near the DYs, nor do I or my passengers ever experience any distress. The deficient moron behind me will always drop under 20mph and cross very substantially into the other lane. And then they rocket back to my bumper in half an instant. I wonder if they think I sped up through the curve? Do they think my car has magic powers? These people also did other tremendously dangerous things after that same road got resurfaced. Some DOT genius thought it would be a good idea to go from regular pavement to that chip-seal stuff, so naturally it was a gravel road for a period of weeks. A CBR600RR doesn't like that kind of road surface, so I limited my speed to 20mph (and there were signs everywhere proclaiming, "LOOSE STONE, 15MPH"). I was angrily passed by all manner of vehicles, most notably a gleaming white Escalade that pitched rocks at me as it blazed by at 3-4 times the advisable speed. There's something dreadfully wrong going on in the head of anyone who thinks it's OK to approach double the posted speed limit on a residential road while occupying the opposite lane, but can't conjure up enough ballsack to even attempt taking a curve without cutting it.

I'm not sure if americans get this problem because your (urban) roads all seem to be so wide. Suburban side roads here are usually a single lane per side, with a car-width shoulder area (sometimes marked, sometimes not) so people can parallel park in front of their houses. Most are wide enough that even if there are cars parked on both sides of the road, it's possible for two normal sized cars to drive past eachother without crashing or crossing the centerline (unless the parked cars were driven by cunty fuckwits of course). What happens in reality is that people are so afraid of clipping the parked cars, they often cross over the centerline. Numerous times I've seen people try to 'avoid' the parked cars, even though there is more than enough room to let them stay on their side of the road, and end up with the majority of their vehicle on the wrong side of the road and nearer to the car parked opposite than to the one they were avoiding in the first place. This is not unusual or aberrant behaviour; the overwhelming majority of people drive like this and I even had to browbeat my missus into not doing it (no dear, the tercel is not, in fact, wider than the entire lane and necessitates you having to cross the centerline to avoid that parked corolla). Consequently, if there are two cars coming toward eachother and the street is line with cars on either side because someone is having a party or something, it effectively closes the road while people sit there opposite eachother not knowing what to do because they're too loving useless to simply look at the road, judge the width of their cars and realise there's more than enough room to get past.

One of these days she is going to be distracted by her phone or her Frappuccino and she won't notice traffic coming to a halt in front of her. Brakes will slam and tires will skid and her car, with all its fancy driver assisting technology, will just barely plow into the rear of another vehicle. The damage to the vehicle will be minimal and after she pulls the airbag away from her slightly bruised face she will be relieved they spent more for a Volvo instead of just using a Corolla. Hopefully this will be some consolation to her as she watches her beautiful baby slowly suck down his last gasp on an ICU respirator. Good things she's got 2 more to get things right with! ~fin~

Encouraging not using seatbelts will just result in an increase in your insurance coverage costs as more people get more seriously injured in accidents and sue for the ever greater medical bills resulting from their lack of seat belt use. I'm more in favour of just revoking a license for 5-10 years after more than one at-fault accident within a 5 year period. One at-fault, eh, maybe it really was chance. Two at-faults, you're an oblivious poo poo who shouldn't be driving. Also, mandatory jail time for anyone caught driving without a license or insurance.

Some states (including Oregon) allow you to carry a digital copy of your insurance that counts as legal proof. I just download a new .pdf file from my insurance and toss it on my phone each renewal and that counts for here.
|
# ? Jul 1, 2015 23:08 |

They accept that here too. But it's the same deal, I have to remember to download it on my phone. If I do a factory reset between renewals and forget, no proof. My policy renewal is all automatic, no paper policy so it's super easy to neglect the insurance card thinking "if I'm in an accident I'll call up progressive" but on the spot at a traffic stop it's not an option. And then on the flip side, I am pretty sure they just care that you have a card, whether or not you doctored it up to look like a current policy. If they could tell a doctored one from a legit one then they would already have a means to check your insurance at the side of the road. It's more like just one more thing to nickel and dime motorists.
