some stuff:

the off-beat ride seems way too loud compared to the other drums

it's pretty repetitive, even for being as short as it is, so i'd recommend varying it up a little bit

you ought to try making the drums and whatever synth or instrument is playing in the background play with each other more. as it is, they just seem like they happen to be occupying the same song

also, the vocal is a bit off-putting for me, but i think that one comes down to personal opinion and taste than the other things i've said here

How do you guys do your basslines on sampled beats? I'm using a piano sample and theres no bass in the original so I have to add my own, but it always sounds just a little bit off!

What I do before I want to sample a song is find out what key its in and jam along with it for a bit. Then once I've sliced the sample I just play around on the keyboard using a bass synth patch until I get something that I like.

the piano is well composed. either you sampled it from somewhere or you have a knack for writing piano pieces. either way, good job.

not horribly big on the drums though. they're really boring. the hats are the same t-t-t-t-t-t-t-t every 8th beat over and over, and the rest of the drum beat is the same 2-bar loop from when the drums come in, to when the song ends. it gets a little mind-numbing.

i know rattling hi-hats are sort of cliche, but in terms of hip-hop (or sort of trap? based on the tempo, seems a bit what you're going for), but they're standard in the genre for a reason: they're interesting. switch up the kick and the snare, too.

and try to make the drums work with the piano and pad! you have synths, you have drums, but neither or them work with each other. they sound like two people who happen to be walking next to each other. make them work with each other!

OH SNAP!
So I made some beats, here's a few that I actually uploaded for once

Number one. Orchestral with bells and poo poo idk
I kind of just tossed that bridge in there cuz it needed a switch up, so I'm probably going to change it, and it still needs to be properly sequenced and mixed, but the idea is there.

Number two - kinda generic with strings 140bpm
The hi hats are boring on this one and the intro sucks, but I like the chorus melody. Still needs work of course. This one's around 140 bpm I believe (or 70 half time I guess?)

Number three, orchestral intro I guess, 140 bpm again
Probably my favorite of the bunch. I'm really happy with the intro here, actually pretty happy with this it altogether, it just definitely needs some effects, better sequencing, and mixing. Also I think there's a hi hat that's off beat in there.

So, any constructive criticism? I take such long breaks from producing that I feel so rusty whenever I start again. Also, is 120bpm bad for hip hop? I read somewhere that 110-130 is a dead zone for hip hop or something, which is funny because a lot of the beats I make end up being around 110-115. Is there such thing as a 'dead zone' which I should try to avoid since it makes rapping to it difficult?

Well, have at it! I've been working on one with a gospel sample as well but I don't have a proper mp3 of it yet. Also keep in mind I'm mixing these on a pair of lovely headphones and an old 5.1 speaker system so they probably sound awful, I plan on getting some cheap monitors at the very least asap.

real good poo poo! i like the sort of strummed chords and your choice of percussion, and the music box lead you used in the last bars of the song.

my only advice would be to high-pass the snare/clap, since i feel like i hear some low end in there that might conflict with your bass and kick. but that's a real small thing, v good job friend

i think this is fantastic, plenty of room for a rap over the top & catchy enough to stand alone as an instrumental. only things i would do is ad a little more ambient noise and reverb the xylophone(?) at the end.

edit: ah it's a music box synth v cool

edit2: did u play the main keys live? i love them

Thanks guys! Yeah I played everything live, first time doing it any other way than piano roll. Getting that swing is difficult.

Its actually a kalimba soundfont, I love it personally, one of my favorite sounds I've found haha.

Thanks for the feedback! I'll take your suggestions and implement them into my next mixdown, I need to mix and master it (don't really know how to master but I'll figure it out as I go). I'm actually going to try and collab with this rapper from Reddit (he doesn't sound super white! Yay!) so this will be my first time ever mixing vocals with my beats. Also means I'm going to have to extend it quite a bit but that shouldn't be too tough. Still, I have a lot to learn about mixing vocals.

But the compliments mean a lot coming from you guys so thanks a lot :) I must've worked on that for a solid 10 hours the other day. I was just in the zone, couldn't stop or I'd lose it.

Edit: slowfreq, you're right, I forgot to HP the snare, there are some really deep tones there. Thanks for pointing that out!

I changed my mind.
I'm not sorry.
I don't commute anymore and I finally have disposable income so I'm thinking about getting a little setup to graduate from iOS dabbling to actually making some music on my desktop since I spent most of my time in my room anyway. Most of the producers I listen to seem to be using FL Studio, so I figured I'll try that first (the most basic version). Is the Fruity version going to give me enough sounds to work with? There seems to be a pretty good selection of synths.

A project that I am working on finally dropped its first single. I am basically in charge of the mixing/mastering. Anyone with experience would mind giving me feedback? This is the first song I've worked on and I'll have a full album to mix before the new year.

Basically, I know that the trumpets in the main sample sound a little thin but I don't know how to address that Issue without adding a layer of synth or whatever. Also, the sample the producer used comes from a youtube video so the quality was not optimal to begin with.

You should look into string pads that sound like strings. Basically, unless it comes from a sample from a song, strings sounds dry as poo poo. Your main (right ear) string loop sounds pretty interesting melodically, but it is way too round in terms of tone. Trap needs to be dirty/grimy and your strings sound way too clean for that. Look into some Trap specific pad presets for either horns or synth and add some layers in there.

As far as the drum is concerned, everything that's in there is mixed well (your HHs could be a little louder/brighter) but it gets boring real quick. Don't hesitate to add more kick/sub and to play with the pitch (see Clams Casino for example). Also, consider adding a clap and an 808 to your mix just so your 1s and 3s snap more.
