I was studying PowerShell, but I set that aside for now. I'm finishing my degree, and these summer classes are eating up my lunch breaks already. I will probably finish out a month of lunches before I go all-out on my programming portfolio, though. Just to get it under my belt if programming doesn't work out. Also, even though it's been around for like 8 years, people still don't use it and you can really set yourself apart. For the job I'm starting soon, I think that it was a key factor in the hiring decision; When I was going through my technical interview, I wasn't feeling very confident until the end when it got to the "Any questions" phase of the interview. I don't remember what question I asked, but it ended with me saying something like "I don't know how to do that through the GUI, but I'm pretty sure I've seen a commandlet for it in Powershell. Even though I mentioned powershell in my cover letter and resume, one of the interviewers said "You know powershell?!" and kicked off a few more questions about powershell. Or maybe it didn't matter at all. In any case, it didn't hurt.

Everyone thinks Windows is a "GUI" OS. Really, just start using Powershell for everything. Once you get a kick for it nearly everything faster. Use tab to auto complete.

Went to replace 1 of 2 domain controllers in a DC because it has been having problems. Turned out that its problems have been caused by the other domain controller (huh?) and well, now I have 0 domain controllers in that datacenter. Time to recover, I suppose... My boss finally showed up to work after being MIA since June 23, for 2 hours. I sat down and explained my huge list of reservations of touching our email and how I don't know how anything works and his answer was a completely uninterested "do it anyway" I begin to make a copy of our live email to send to the new machine which saturated the disk I/O. 30 minutes later this email chain occurs because someone mentioned their email was slow. quote:The live database is being copied over to the dev machine. I'm one of two people who work here, and I'm gone in 7 weeks. He's really not interested in writing down anything and he'd probably get really pissy and refuse if I told him to sign his name. Maybe he's scared of it breaking and wants me to be blamed if it does go wrong? Even things that I've fixed previously, I was told to not waste my time making documentation for what was wrong and how I fixed it because he's not going to read it. I ignored and him and gave the people who were affected by the issue (phones interfering with mill measurement equipment) documentation instead. At first he held his reference hostage in basically everything but I don't even care about it now. I have enough people that I've helped who are willing to bend over backwards for me. Seriously, I take notes for every single meeting I'm in, even if I have little to contribute. And then after the meeting, I always send out minutes to everyone, and call out any action items. A few times I haven't, since the meeting had no take aways for me or my team, so whatever, and I got an email from my manager "where are the notes?" Pavlovian.

I share an office with our monitoring guy. He sent me a message on Lync one day asking me to add a host to puppet before he added it to our monitoring system. Months later now the host was never added to the monitoring system and he's telling people it's because I never told him I was done setting up puppet on it and his evidence for this is that I didn't respond to his Lync message. EDIT: I just checked to see whatever happened to the change request for the creation of this host.
