disarm the bomb!

I'm considering ditching my 61-key boat-anchor monstrosity of a MIDI controller, since I don't really do as much music as sound design these days, but I'm considering saving up and buying a keyboard synth to replace it. That being said, and individual qualities of synths aside, am I crazy for wanting a synth to double-team as an instrument and a DAW controller? Right now I'm considering saving up (probably for a year and a half +) for an Elektron Analog Keys, since I love the way it sounds.

Octatrack sending midi clock and notes to my modular (https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/67852) + any software synths (thats probably gonna change when my analog 4 gets here lol), also running percussion with lots of programmed in one shots and effects on the crossfader. Sometimes I do berlin school style sequencer playing, transposing sequences up and down over other sampled sequences tracks or just on their own, but lately I've been doing more nitty gritty midi programming on the octatrack, building lots of patterns trying to keep some sort of song structure in mind as I do it, switching between them live and muting parts/bringing them in, basically acting as a human clip launcher. Makes me wish I had more arms, but it's a lot more fun for me than shuffling tracks around in a DAW. I posted a vid earlier of a song I made that shows this process a bit https://youtu.be/aLJu2PFkwds. These days all ableton does is pull compresson/EQ duties and run my favorite vsts (Aalto hands down).

Wow, dude, that's beautiful. Shades of Aphex Twin and Orbital and Mouse on Mars here (these are high praise from me!)! Mr. Glass posted:oh good i thought i was the only one Back when I had tonnes of hardware synths, I rarely multi-tracked. I certainly never did when I was all ITB (exception of occasionally freezing a track or three if CPU was pegged). I did a bunch of drums / bass / guitar / vox stuff by myself though, and it got me into the "thinking ahead about what the song might be" habit, and I guess multi-tracking electronic music came kind of naturally when I impulse-bought a big hardware monosynth and had no other synths at all. So it hasn't always been my workflow, it kind of evolved to that out of necessity. I suppose I could add plug-ins to the mix, but I'm just really enjoying patching everything up as I want it, and I hate to be that guy but OH MY GOD IT SOUNDS SO MUCH BETTER TO DO IT ON THE MODULAR (sorry, µHe, I love Diva but it just isn't the real thing). I just need 6 more 9U racks so I can stop multi-tracking and do stuff live I guess?

So I started looking at synths... but then I remembered that the whole reason I was in the market to begin with was because I wanted something with DAW control, and the synths I looked at didn't have the kind of controls I was looking for (transport, assignable pads, etc). So I ended up buying the least sexy keyboard in the world: Roland FA-06. I actually really like it.

Marc Doty is in the middle of rolling out videos for the Odyssey at present. Will probably take a month or so for the whole set at the rate he's going (he's doing P6 and the Leipzig right now as well).

drat that thing is amazing. I'm getting my eurorack in summer, then I'll get this to clock it, use it with the shruthi at the same time and then build up a little skiff of drum modules. That'll be my setup finished, no more gear until I've done an album or 4 eps.

looks like you forgot the power supply is that one of those synthrotek cases like Mr. Sharps has?

# ? Jul 3, 2015 20:33 |

One in the same, yes. The PSU plugs into one of the 1U tiles for power. I actually plan to sell off the case soon since I'm building a 12U rack into an old briefcase I found at the thrift store. Still though the Synthrotek case is a stellar option for a perfectly portable modular system. This is probably the last system I'll rack into this particular case however . Decided to rack this particular configuration up last night at 2am to bring with me to a jam session tonight with a few friends. I haven't been able to find a briefcase that was deep enough that I could fit modules in both the base and the lid. my current plan is to build a 12Ux104hp briefcase style case out of plywood. e: i built 6Ux84hp into an old samsonite briefcase and it turned out pretty well but that's just nowhere big enough to accomadate my GAS Mr. Glass fucked around with this message at 21:49 on Jul 3, 2015 |

I've got my work cut out for me but it should be a fun project. Not going to ditch the Synthrotek case until the new one is complete, i don't know if briefcase is the right word for this thing either but you get the idea. I'll be able to get 12U at 86HP with a little extra room to store power bricks and patch cables

I don't see why they couldn't do 6-op, or even reproduce the SY-77 engine. Moore's law and all. Goddamnit Yamaha. Just rerelease the FS1R so I can get FM the gently caress out of my system.

Yeeep. SY99 or FS1r with modern connectivity (really just sample/patch management is what I'd want personally) would be amazing. I get the feeling these won't be toy-cheap either. I'm sure Yamaha is making these because of Korg's success but will miss the point entirely. 250~350$ is my guess. If the YC sounds half decent I look forward to scooping it up on clearance I suppose. Judging an unreleased, unspecified entire line of synthesizers from photos and a leak of one's specs??? Call the synth police.

Also, LOL @ the YC and CP model from that same 'leak'. Is anyone really asking for a standalone transistor organ emulation, or an inevitably-sample-based electric piano? The market already has that poo poo covered with infinitely-more flexible machines. The DX and the CS make a little sense, but not the others. e: If the CP were physical modeling, it might be interesting. e2: LOL, it's not. If the CP has physical modeling or the CS has ACB stuff the TR8 & TB3 has then they would legit be cool to have even at something like $4-500. The DX line has always needed a massive amount of controls and this is seriously the wrong format to reboot that line. The YC... the VR-09 is leagues better and will only cost like $400 more. Or you could get an electro and never need an organ keyboard ever again.
