Wowporn posted:Those titles look like loving ms powerpoint placeholder text, why would they choose any of that I really hope this isn't their new template or whatever they call it, I already get irrationally irritated at the big red stripe Marvel has now. There are some floppies with amazing covers that I've wanted to buy just for the art but the banner ruins the whole thing. Something about that layout really reinforces the 90s as gently caress, it's like how all video game covers were framed.

Flesh Forge posted:Seriously why did they take away Venom's mouth, what the gently caress. When Venom was first created, his mouth was actually meant to be a reflection of his mental state. If he was calm, it would be normal. If he was growing unhinged, he'd get a super-sized Grinch smile. If he was feeling murderous, you would get the slathering fang mawv that most people recognize. This was either forgotten or abandoned (depending on who you ask) after his first few appearances. Maybe they're going back to his roots with the art direction for the new comic?

Agent Venom is really the only worthwhile Venom there's been outside of his first few years and the only time he had a mouth was when he was getting out of control. No mouth Venom has been a thing for literally years now.

No mouth Venom has been a thing for literally years now. I mentioned that in the other thread.. The mouth stuff is outdated anyway, it can look cool sometimes but it's so rooted in the period Venom was originally popular in, not having it is as much a big deal as Iron Man not having a rotery phone in his armor any more.

The best part of the Karnak cover is in the very upper-right corner of the page. I have no idea who the hell "Karnak" is, but I know I'll be checking this one out regardless.

Karnak is the best of the Inhumans. He knows space kung fu. I, too, will be checking it out.

Oh, KARNAK. This whole time I thought we were talking about Korvac. That's a SLIGHTLY less weird character to make a book for.

Didn't Aja do the Hawkeye series recently? If so, those 6 Ellis issues will be spaced out over the course of 2 years.

Zaffino is the artist, Aja is the cover artist. And it's probably impossible to hate Karnak if you've ever read anything involving the Inhumans. He's great.

I don't think I've ever read a story that focused on Karnak in any way, but isn't he a stereotypical "mystical Asian martial artist" type, only with a giant head?

Karnak would be cooler if he didn't have that big stupid head.

This is why you should like Karnak: He was in the afterlife, saw the flaw in it, and used that flaw to come back to life. Coming back to life involved bursting through the chest of an evil Inhuman who had the powers to catalog dead Inhumans' memories.

It was interesting because Korvac had made a heel-face turn after posing as human for a while and discovering love, but the Avengers didn't know it. As a result they ended up killing him for having absolutely benevolent intentions.

I understand finding the dialogue of the time off-putting because it was a very different kind of writing, but this is very wrong. There's a ton of great '60s comics that are good on their own merits and not just because they were the best of a weird era. Fantastic Four and Amazing Spider-Man near the top of that list for sure.
