In Human revolution pretty sure it wasn't any of the bosses, just NPC's like the police office on guard at the desk who you could talk into letting you in, or the thug guy who you could persuade to give you the address of where the girl who was kidnapped was, or persuading the 'bar man' to let you talk to Tong. So yeah mostly not about avoiding combat, more just about getting info to make life easy or open up new pathways.

Okay, that stuff I remember. I was referring to boss fights tho because Mankind Divided sounds like it'll have that.

He's saying there's no indicator in the world where commentary is. You just have to randomly walk onto the right spot to trigger the prompt to play them, and you can miss a bunch as a result.

Yeah, I realized that almost immediately after I posted it. I learned where they were likely to be, but I'm sure I missed a few. Usually at the entrance{s} to an area or building, and around/before/after a big impressive view or setpiece (and during pretty much every cutscene). I guess they could have done a proximity marker when you get within 10-15 meters of one, like a mini-objective marker. As long as it was optional, like pretty much every highlighting option was in that game (which I appreciated).

Trying to listen to the commentary in-game is incredibly annoying and badly implemented. Just youtube it instead.

It's been that way with a lot of games and its really weird. Metal Gear Solid becomes so much easier if you go the non-lethal route because all soldiers do if they find someone sleeping is wake them up and they just pretend like nothing happened. No extra caution, no alert, nothing.

Past the original MGS, it was pretty clear that mr. "war is hell abloo bloo bloo" Kojima intended players to take the non-lethal route, and the lethal route was the alternative way of doing things.
The array of guns in 4 was likely put there through konami's insistence. If Hideo had his way, it would be the M9 and nothing else.

Not that it's possible to ruin that game much more.

For such an Auteur Hideo was forced to change plenty in MGS4 for example Snake really was supposed to kill himself in the graveyard and no Big Boss scene but the staff complained. IMO it made a much better story

And the writing for the "tragic boss characters" in MGS4 has to be the worst in a triple A game ever.

I don't like when a game glorifies war and then tries to make you feel bad for taking part in it. MGS4 and its expansive gun modding aspect clearly had a lot of effort put into it, and then the game tries to push this anti-war narrative, and it just felt like Kojima was trying to play both sides.

I would agree but like a previous poster mentioned that all felt like something added by Konami particularly given how different it was to previous MGS games.

Metal Gear Solid V is pretty much going to be more of the same (IV was good anyways, ya'll suck), soooooo..... And you could do stealth runs in MGSIV, they are very challenging but i've seen speed runs where the player got through it on the hardest difficulty.

The original original idea was for Snake and Otacon to be executed for their crimes as "Here's to You" played.

Not exactly true. The rumor is that he is still onboard until MGSV releases and then he is parting ways with Konami. He has full direction of MGSV. If Konami were to boot him out and then change all of his ideas, it would be a huge disaster because the game has been in development for like 5 years and his name was removed from the marketing material while MGSV was in its beta testing stage.

Don't get me wrong, V is already doomed. I'm hoping for a VI where you can make decisions based on the situations you face, rather than someone crying into your radio for 20 minutes.

The original idea should have been for Kojima to get fired out of a cannon into a land mine factory.

I mean the series has been pretty consistently 'Kojima-y' so I don't know what you expect it to be rescued as.

I'm not understanding this sudden hate for Kojima and feeling like V is not going to be a good game. Everything i've seen of it so far looks incredible. I fully expect this will be one of my favorite games of the year.

This is equally valid for dragon age 2 as for MGS 4. "Loved by the same critics who hated alpha protocol."

You are simply too edgy and Xtreme for my delicate sensibilities forums poster ilustforponydeath.

Speaking of MGS and DE, was MGS3 the first game to feature a Mosin Nagant as a tranquilising sniper rifle? If so does that mean DE:HR features it in reference to MGS? If not where did the MN as a tranq gun come from in games?

I really don't think so. There was plenty of gun porn in the previous games, so it felt like the logical progression for Kojima, not something Konami forced him to do.

Anyone who does the first boss fight in HR using anything but the barrels is doing it wrong imo, unless you're doing a non-lethal run in the DC thats supposedly possible. The second boss I didn't know was even slightly hard until a second run through the game because I managed to taze her instantly and get a full round of explosive revolver shots into her head as soon as the fight started

Prolly everyone has said this before, but I hope they got rid of the frankly stupid XP system in HR in favor for a purely objective-based XP system for the sequel, where everyone gets the same XP regardless of playstyle choice. If something is inherently fun to play you don't need extra XP carrot on sticks to dangle in front of the players.

They didn't, look at the E3 gameplay footage. They even kept XP rewards for hacking, keeping that skill stupidly OP. You'd think that's redundant since hacking something provides an inherent reward (a stash of goods, an alternate pathway etc.) but it's the "awesome button" design sensibility in effect, where even the most mundane action is tailored to provide a dopamine release.

Killing people is way easier than sneaking so you don't need as much XP. To be honest though you get way too much XP in the game as it is. By the end you can buy pretty much every augmentation and upgrade you want. I feel like the game should give you way less XP throughout so that you have to make more concrete choices and to prevent you from becoming so overpowered nothing in the game is an obstacle.

I've always liked the notion of XP being tied to mission completion specifically; no XP for kills or takedowns. All that counts is the mission objective; no one way of achieving it is rewarded over another. Non-XP resources acquired (or conversely, not spent) are reward enough for any particular favoured approach. I felt it worked well as an approach in ME2, for example. Its all about the mission, rather than your ability to 'milk' it.

While I agree with you in theory, do you give xp for sidequests as well? Because that incentivizes doing the side quests even though you really don't care for [npc] (that's also true for encounter/exploration xp though).

I go with yes. In this I again allude to ME2. While my focus was on 'main mission stuff', completion of *objectives* is perhaps a better descriptor. Some objectives are adjacent to the main thrust of the game, but have value nonetheless in its framework. Scaled accordingly.

Except that's not true though? And what about someone who wants to play a sneaky assassin, does he also need less XP because he's killing people with guns that take more inventory space and takedowns which alert people for no good reason?
